OS X :: Using Airport Network Choice - How To Build Choices
Dec 31, 2010
When my laptop awakens from sleep, it forgets which network my wifi should be on and I end up on some network that's in my building instead of my own. Is there any way to keep my airport pointed to my home network only at all times?

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.

I have a slow network issue. I'll try to make it as simple as possible.
1 MacBook Pro
1 Airport Extreme
1 Airport Express to Extend the Network
The network to my living room was slow, so I added the Express to extend the network. When connected through the Express, with a Time Machine backup, I'm getting about 500K/sec transfer speeds. When I move the laptop away from the Express and close to the Extreme, the network works much faster, about 5MB/sec. I don't understand why the network is so much slower when using the Airport Express as a network extender. Is the speed difference normally that much? If it's not supposed to be, is there anything I can do?

Here is my situation. I am a network newbie. I bought a Airport Extreme (2008 model without dual band & guest networking) and have it setup with my ADSL broadband modem. I bought it so I could use the high speed N to connect to my Apple TV. It replaced a Linksys WRT54G.
My concern is this. We have another laptop in the house which only has Wireless G. It is connected most of the time to our network, so I presume that it will be slowing the speed of my Extreme to G levels.
Can I connect my old Linksys G router somehow to my network to create a seperate Wireless G network to access the internet. The older laptop can be at G speeds and my Extreme network remaining at N speeds ?
Maybe an easier option is to buy a N USB adaptor for my laptop but I don't want to buy something if I can use my current equipment.

I am finally upgrading to an iMac and I need some help. I was looking at the 21in ones and I have a choice of processors 3.06 Ghz and the 3.2 Ghz (and even the i5 3.6 Ghz). Should I pay the extra $300 and move from the 3.06 Ghz to the 3.2? For this computer, I will be doing photo stuff and some video. Family things - nothing for work or commercial use. Or should I opt for more memory instead and not worry about the processor. From studing Apple, processor choice seems to help keep the machine current (or pertinent) longer than anything else.
The low level iMac seems ok, but should I bump up to the next level machine.

I bought my 13"MBP about 2-3 months ago. I mainly use it for uni so It's back and forth (great portability). But I am looking into getting a monitor for my setup at home. I have the hdmi adapter + HDMI cable which I use to connect to my tv in the living room. (52" Bravia). I am looking to spend about $150-$200 no more then that. Apple monitors are out of my price range.
I also have a few questions.
- Is it better to get a monitor with HDMI?
- Is vga/dvi good? How is it for those who have it?
- Is there much difference between 1600 x 900 and 1920 x 1080?
- Will my MBP look fine on any of these monitors?
Here are some that I have been looking at

I am trying out Picasa on my iMac and just installed Adobe Lightroom. There does not appear to be a way to change or expand the choices in Picasa for "open" of a file.
I would like to use Picasa to manage my photos and do quick edits but be able to open a given photo in Lightroom.
Does anyone know of a way to set this up?

I need advice on purchasing an external drive for back up purposes. I just got a 15" MBP 2.8 500GB after getting some great advice from the group. I currently have a WD My Book Studio 1TB, which I purchased after a WD drive appeared to loose my information. In addition, I had a lacie drive that died several years ago, so I am not so confident in the external drives, so I want a secondary drive for the extra security. I went to purchase the same WD drive I got a few months ago, but learned that it no longer is sold because the drives have been updated, and not for the better.
Ideally I would love to get a small drive that is 1TB that I can keep in a safe box, in case of the unexpected. I haven't been able to find any smaller portable drives that are 1TB and the 1 WD I found seems to be a no no. Something stable and reliable would be great. I am planning to begin using TM for backups.

I just bought an IMac 21.5" - 'Mid 2011' - Lion. It's wireless. I'd like to start up the computer using an external HD. I know that I should hit the option key to present the choices. This does not work from rebooting, it only functions when I turn off the machine, wait 20 seconds & hit the 'turn on' button again. Also, I've noticed that if I go into the Apple Help menu & type 'Pram' nothing comes up. In an older MBP, also using Lion, I get a list of choices. I would also like to know if this normal behavior?

Since this is an often-asked question for switchers, I'll share my experience with Office suites on my Macbook Pro with Intel Duo 4GB Ram running 10.5.7.
I've gone back and forth. I currently have installed MS Office 2008, NeoOffice 3, and iWork 09.
Office 2008 opens the slowww-est of the 3 and can't open any macros contained in Excel sheets I email from my Windows counterpart at work. I have suspicion as to why the macros were taken out, but it's my conspiracy theory at best. M$ says they'll return the macros with the next Mac version of Office due in 2012-ish. Entourage 2008 is NOT a feature-for-feature match Outlook-clone and doesn't direct sync with iPhone..has to use iCal as a conduit and that is marginal at best. Forget integration with Google.
So far, the M$ Office 2008 software has had more support patches than any other software installed on my Mac. Regrettably, I have to open Word docs sent from my Windows work computer and even then, formatting doesn't stay the same. What's up with that?
Bottom line is, I've read other user recommend using MS Office 2004 for Mac since it does include the macro support for Excel.
NeoOffice 3 is a free derivative of the free OpenOffice 3 that was recently released and often has enhancements not found in OO3. NeoOffice has found a home in the Dock as I use it alot for home-base quick document or spreadsheet use. I like being able to create any type of document without having to open another program and can save my work in a default MS file-type(.docx, .xlsx, .doc) in case I need to email it to the office. I haven't tried the Presentation piece of this suite. There isn't an email client included in this Office suite.
Bottomline is, NeoOffice is a great piece of software and the free price tag shouldn't negate it's value. It's cross-compatible with M$ Office and adds a few tweaks that make it more Mac-friendly.
iWork 09 was recently purchased as part of the Mac Box set mainly because I wanted OSX 10.5.6(with all the updates) and iLife09 and it was cheaper to buy it this way. While I haven't tried out the more intense parts of iLife09, it shows great promise as I find myself using it more. You can export your documents into Word and it hits/misses being 100% perfectly imported into Word. I like the media integration and the ease of use of dragging and dropping, which is a core strength in Mac software altogether. I was up and running with Pages alot quicker than I had with Word or even the dreaded Word 2007 with its changed interface....another personal UGH! for me.
Bottomline here is, $79 is a great price for a suite that includes Pages(Word), Numbers(Excel), and KeyNote(PowerPoint) and integrated well with the Mac media suites. Apple seems committed to continue making iWork a viable work suite. I'm hopeful one day that Apple will merge iCal and Mail together so it can be an Outlook killer.
Overall, this one is a toughie. Most worksites use M$ Office and depending on how much work you want to put in so you can keep using an alternative, I'd recommend a combo of NeoOffice 3 and iWork. Heck, sometimes the Mac Office .doc and Windows Office .doc files don't import and display exactly anyway, so I would save the $150 and spend the $79 on iWork and add the free NeoOffice. Use Pages for your word processing and NeoOffice Spreadsheet for excel-type needs.
If you're just getting starting and on a budget(ahem, college students), NeoOffice is the way to go. Just plan to get iWork at some point.
As a "I have to say this".....if you have to work intensively with Word or Excel from the office and at home/on the road, then bite the big bullet and purchase a copy of Windows XP, Office 2007, Parallels 4.0 and install them. Not the most desirable option since it runs between $400-$800 to do this(depending on the version of Office08 you get), but it may be necessary if it's work-required. Or, choose to not do work at home.

Today I did my normal software update as usual only to find out the Lion update left me with only two choices of screen resolution, 1920x1200(too big) and 960x600(too small), on my 24" iMac. The same update did not affect my Pro. As I need a 1024x768 screen resolution on my iMac, how can I restore those screen resolution settings? I called AppleCare, and they sent me an additional update that I downloaded and installed but it did not change anything. My iMac is right at 5 years old. Do these things ever get to the point that updates create such problems? Everything was working perfectly until this happened. Plus they said there's no way to go back(that is, return to the same point that I was before the update).

I am wondering if I am getting a good transfer rate on my time capsule. (Using leopard). If I alt (option) click on the airport icon on the top of the screen, I can get details to my network. One of the details is transfer. I am assuming this is the speed of my network. Do you know what this is measured in? When I have the time capsule as a G router I get a transfer of 130. When I have the TC as an N router, I get a transfer of 200 - 264. Can anyone tell me if these numbers are good, or do I need to do something to get the numbers closer to where they should be.

I have recently upgraded my wireless network to N+ using a Belkin Modem Router. Security is WPA2-PSK, and MAC access is disabled. All MacBooks (Leopard & Tiger), PCs (XP) and iphones connect without any problem, however my daughter's PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.11, and with the most recent Airport software, can't connect to the network. The password prompt when selecting the network only allows for entering a WEP password.

My problems are getting bigger and bigger:
1. I could not activate my airport card after installing 10.6
2. I erased all data in system configuration as other threads told me
[URL]
3. Then my MB said that there is no airport card installed (but it is)
4. After that I tried to reinstall 10.6 but DVD stopped loading and said it interrupted
5. Now Im even not able to open network preferences! It loads, and loads, and loads...
6. I installed 10.6.1 but nothing happened
I feel like snow leopard (and my attempt to clear the situation) killed network on my MB-Pro.

I have an Airport Extreme (goes up to N) as my main router, and I'd like to extend my signal with a Linksys router that is a/b/g (no N support) and maybe an a/b/g Airport Express. Is this possible? Will I have to downgrade my network to G? Also, how do I go about doing this? My plan is to plug them into Ethernet spots throughout the house, but I don't want to have 3 different networks, so how do I make them wireless extenders as opposed to standalone routers?
Would it be worth it just to spring for a new Airport Express (that supports N)? If I do that, do I need to plug it into Ethernet to extend my signal, or will it be able to pick up the signal wirelessly and then extend it?

I recently got a PowerPC G4 from a family member and reinstalled Mac OS X 10.5. I did this without the Airport Extreme card installed. After installation I put the card in, and after booting up I thought the card would be recognized. I was wrong. Any suggestions besides that the card might be bad, that I can do to fix this? The card works on other machines.

I have a WPA/WPA2 password and an restricted access list.
We're on Leopard.

i'm using a MacBook Pro and Ableton Live 8, for those familiar... I have to create an ad-hoc network to get some apps like Liine apps working with my other Apple devices. Liine has some very clear and simple videos, as some i saw on Youtube. The thing is, for some reason, i don't have the AirPort option in my settings. I downloaded AirPort Utility 6.0, but it doesn't find a network or i don't know what.

Lately I've been noticing that my Airport disconnects about every 10 - 15 mins or so and then reconnects after it searches for a network, which is mine. 99% of the time I'm sitting right in front of my router. I've reset the router, rebooted, reset my pram, and the problem still persists. This issue doesn't occur on my girlfriends HP.

New here and new mac user all together. I have looked quite a bit for an answer to this question but have not found one that applies directly to my situation.
My dilemma is that my apartment complex has free (unsecured) wireless but currently with my macbook pro, I can not register the signal in my living room. I just got Airport Express with the idea of extending the signal to all areas of my apartment. However when I go to "Join current wireless network", the apartment's signal does not show up (two other networks do show up though they are password protected).
I have read here that certain routers are not compatible with Airport Express (is this true?) and I am wondering if that's a possibility here.
Is there a fix for this? Do I need access to the router?

I recently replaced my aging linksys G router with an Airport extreme. I have an HP 2605dn printer connected to it via ethernet. When I set this up with the old router everything worked great, printer showed up in OSX and added with a couple of clicks. Now that I have moved to the airport I cannot find the printer at all from OSX on either my MacBook Pro with 10.6 or my Powerbook with 10.5. However all of the Windows 7 machines I have in the house see it and print fine. I feel like I'm missing something very simple and help would be amazing.

I have a MacBook Pro from 2009. The airport has abruptly stopped finding any networks. I have had problems in the last few months (just after I moved to the states from Canada). My roommates' laptops could pick up the network, and mine kept dropping out. I went home for the holidays, and it worked fine (despite the router being even further from my computer).
when i returned, i had a few days of very spotty internet (much higher number of drop outs) and now it won't detect a single network. My warranty is up so i'm nervous that this is something internal they have to replace, but I"m hoping there is some way for me to check. I just tried to connect at work, and it detects nothing here too. so it is NOT interference.
sidenote: My graphics card is malfunctioning (which is under extended warranty for this model), and I am taking that to get replaced today... is there any crazy conceivable way that the two issues could be connected???
bottom line: what can I do now to rule out (or in) the possibility of hardware malfunction causing my airport to stop detecting networks?

I have a macbook air, but this seems to apply to any mac's with airport. I connect once to our corporate wireless network, I type in the password and it connects. On occasions, when I start up the computer, it doesn't connect and a window pops up with my network listed but it says "none of your preferred networks are available". When I first connect I do check off remember this network. So why isn't it remembering it?
When I go into system preference and click on network, select airport and click on advanced, that network does appear under the preferred networks. Does anyone know why its not letting me automatically connect the next time? Sometimes its ok, sometimes it doesn't even know I connected to this network before.

I can't get our G3 iBook to connect to our AirPort network anymore. It's the last-gen AirPort Extreme base station (domey type with a modem) and I've successfully used our wireless security in the past. We use WPA/WPA2 Personal with a 40 character password. The iBook has worked before with this configuration, and it works when there is no security set up, but even though our town is filled with computer illiterates and there are only 2,000 of them, I'd like security.
