OS X :: Swap G5 & Intel IMac Startup Drives?

Oct 7, 2009

We've got a 17" G5 iMac and a 20" Intel iMac that need to switch places and users. The easiest thing for me, would be to just swap out the internal hard drives. They both have Leopard installed, but I don't know if the different processors get dedicated system software installed, or can I just swap 'em?

OS X :: Can I Just Swap Drives

Mar 25, 2009

Just got a new MacPro at my office (the end-of-life'd 8 core model) and my old MacPro is going to a coworker. Can I just take the drive out of my MacPro and stick it in the new MacPro and just be off and running? I mean, i've already done it and everything seems to be running ok. The only issues I'm seeing is that my Adobe CS3 software freaked out and deactivated and TimeMachine wants to start over - won't recognize my previous backup data

OS X :: Swap OS Versions Between Internal And External Drives?

Oct 19, 2009

Currently, my iMac has 10.4.11 on the internal 250GB drive and 10.5.8 on an external 500 GB drive. Is there any way to 'move' 10.5.8 to the internal drive and the 10.4.11 to the external, even if it requires another external drive to accomodate the swap, without reinstalling? There is plenty of disk space on each. Not sure if this would require new installations with some form of backup of data/applications. Trying to do as little as possible.

My late 2006 MBP 160GB hard drive died, can I install a late 2006 macbook 60GB hard drive into my macbook pro without any boot issues? Both machines have snow leopard, but since this is not a straight swap and I'm crossing between models I wasn't sure how successful I would be. IMac (Intel) :: External USB Drives Unmounting And Getting Corrupted

Jun 20, 2014

I have about 6 external USB drives that are mostly 1TB or 1.5TB.  I have been trying to copy files from old ones to new ones but if I plug in more than two they keep  unmounting with the message that the drive was not unmounted properly and may now be damaged.  I have two so far that are corrupted.  I have tried three different powered USB hubs thinking it was lack of power but it made no difference.  This problem occurs on my 26" iMac Running Lion and on my new PowerBookPro running Mavericks.

It happens every time the mac starts up. My computer stats should be below.

IMac (Intel) :: Makes Normal Startup After Had Been Put Into Sleep

Jun 24, 2014

iMac makes normal startup after had been put into sleep..One strange behaviour can be observed with iMac Late 2013.At the end of day the user puts the mac into sleep. On next day pushing the power button is necessary to activate the mac.

The main point is that iMac starts up as it was shut down at the previous day(this is conclusion based on screens shown after mac activation).

User expectation is, that on next day when activating it the mac show screens as it was leaving sleep instead of showing screens typical for normal startup (after hard power down).

I had the harddrive replaced as part of one of the recall programmes form Apple as the OEM drive was malfunctioning, that made it slightly better, but soon after the old poor performance was back.

IMac (Intel) :: No Apple Logo Appears During Startup

Aug 28, 2014

I am fixing this 2007 iMac for free for an autistic child. Apparently, changing computers for someone that is autistic isn't ideal. I don't have the history with this iMac, just that it isn't working. They supposedly did have the hard drive replaced? It sounds like a dvd is inside it when it starts up, could be the installation dvd?Either way, I have not seen it before where the Apple logo refuses to show on the start up screen. It just stays gray.

1. I've tried zapping the PRAM. Didn't have any changes.

2. I tried starting up in safe mode, but getting passed the apple logo is required for that

3. I tried single user mode, but getting passed the apple logo is required for that

4. I tried holding the c key to start up off of the dvd, nothing happens

5. I tried holding the mouse button (and cmd, opt, f, o) to manually eject the dvd during start-up.

Mac Pro :: Does Spotlight Begin To Re-index Drives After Each Startup?

Jun 2, 2012

Three days ago I was browsing the web when my cursor evidently brushed over an ad for MacKeeper. In a few seconds MacKeeper had downloaded itself without asking and taken over Safari. Since I don't like thuggish behavior in people or in software, as soon as I regained control of Safari I moved MacKeeper to the trash and did a "Secure Empty Trash." I then aimed Intego's Virus Barrier at the Downloads folder and it found nothing questionable. I checked out various webpages where people describe how to rid your computer of MacKeeper if you've installed it - - I didn't install it, but I checked in all the recommended places and found nothing visible. However whether it is a coincidence or there is a causal relation immediately after this incident, Spotlight began to re-index my two internal hard drives - - estimating first that it would take 3 days, then 7 days to index them. I wrote about this on another thread and received the following advice:

"Spotlight's probably in a wobble. A few things you could do:

1. Tell Spotlight to start again. Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app) and copy/paste this command: sudo mdutil -E /

Press 'return'. You'll be asked for your password, which will not echo when you type it, so type carefully.

Give Spotlight a few minutes then check on its progress, does it look like it's going to complete in a reasonable amount of time? If the problem persists

2. Restart your Mac in Safe mode and log in to your account.

This'll take a while. When it's finished, immediately restart and log in normally and check on Spotlight again."

I performed the first step. After a few minutes Spotlight estimated that it would complete indexing in 20 minutes. Over the next few hours it continued to increase its estimates to an ever larger number of hours.

Then I performed the second step. After completing it Spotlight's estimate was that it would take several days.

Eventually I performed the first step again and the same sequence of increasing estimates occurred.

I left the computer on overnight and by morning Spotlight estimated it would take 35 hours to complete indexing of my drives.

Later on I turned the computer off. When I started it up again Spotlight had started once again to re-index my drives and now estimates it will take 5 days.

None of this behavior had occurred before the mishap with MacKeeper. Since I have a recent clone of the startup drive that was made before this incident it seems possible that I could zero out my internal startup drive after saving any files that have changed to a DVD, use Virus Barrier to check if there is anything questionable present in the folder in which they are located and then clone the data from the backup drive back to the newly formatted internal hard drive. However I would rather not have to do this, so I would be most grateful for any less extreme suggestions.

IMac (Intel) :: Going Into Target Disk Mode Instead Of Startup Manager

Aug 21, 2014

I'm trying to sort out a problem with a mid-2007 iMac. When trying to start it up normally it would get past the Apple screen, then go onto a blue screen with a cursor and stay there.

I made a bootable Snow Leopard USB drive to try and repair the disk / re-install the OS. Plugged in the USB drive, and tried to boot the iMac into startup manager by holding down the option key. But instead of showing the volumes to launch startup manager, it keeps bringing up a grey screen with the Firewire logo on, which I believe is what happens when launching into Target Disk Mode.

IMac :: Swap I7 CPU From Dell Into 27" I5?

Feb 12, 2010

I recently bought a 27" iMac i5, selected over my preferred i7 configuration primarily because I wanted to get it at the local Apple Store and have it be easy to swap in case of screen/build problems. My 27" iMac i5 is beautiful, and hassle free. I just ordered a Dell XPS 8100 with the 2.8 Core i7-860 chip in it - that machine doesn't really NEED the i7, but it was a cheap upgrade on Dell's website. I'm reasonably confident that this is the exact same chip used in the 27" i7 iMac.

So, the question - is it POSSIBLE to swap the i5 in my iMac and the i7 CPU's in my Dell? I know it's difficult (I've previously swapped an SSD into a 20" Aluminum iMac), and I know it would void my warranty, and I may well never actually do it. It's clear that I probably SHOULDN'T do this, but I'm curious as to whether I COULD. So, the question is, "Is there any reason (sockets, size, heat, speed, other incompatibility) why this swap physically wouldn't work?" and next, is there anything beyond a physcial swapI need to do to make it work? reset anything on the Dell for it to accept the i5?
