So my mom just bought an iMac from her friend's mother, and I'm trying to restore it to factory settings using the Installation disks that came with my MacBook Pro. I just inserted the discs and clicked "Install Mac OS X" and then it gives me a "Restart" button, but I cannot restart it without putting in the Password which I do not have. Is there another way to do this?

But it is failing telling me that my network is very slow while I used the best network in my area. How should I get an OS X lion to my CP? Is it possible to get it from another MacBook pro? View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and used Migration Assistant to transfer my files. I realized after that I should have transfered right at the beginning when I had the chance for Setup Assistant, because I have a lot of files that require permission from my other user account on my old MacBook. I went to Disk Utilities, and there were two options to "Erase Free Space", some Toshiba thing and Macintosh HD (I am assuming was the hard drive that was transferred). I pushed "Erase Free Space" and closed down disk utility, but it looks like it didn't delete my hard drive because all the applications and files are still there. I am now reinstalling OS X Lion hoping it will bring me back to that first screen where it askes if i want to transfer from another computer. Am I doing this right? I feel like I'm gonna mess something up and i've already wasted 5 hours already trying to fix my primary mistake of using Migration.

I have a late 2009 iMac that came with Snow Leopard, but has been upgraded to Lion via the App store, so I have no recovery discs. I tried reinstalling Lion with the built in recovery, but it did not wipe HD clean. I know I need to erase the HD in Disc Utility, but then I won't have a way to reinstall Lion.

Im selling my macbook pro and am trying to restore it to factory settings. I have inserted the "install disc" many times. However, my laptop is never able to start up. It alternates between a black and grey (no apple or wheel) screen. I've tried holding down the "C" key while rebooting..that didnt work. I've tried clicking restart when it instructs me to...that didnt work I've tried going to system preferences --> startup disk --> clicking the install drive and it still didnt work. What can I do? My mac can start up and work perfectly fine without the disk, its just that i need to restore it to factory settings.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI work in Tech Services at my University, and I've been presented with this issue multiple times at work. I think my entire group of co-workers have just been living with the precedent, a notion that I think is entirely false. Here's an example of the situation:
A student comes in with a non-working MacBook, vintage 2006, say. Something's wrong with the OS itself.. the student probably deleted /etc or something, not knowing what it was. Regardless, the computer is effectively borked and a reinstallation of Mac OS X is in order. My co-workers, and even my boss, tell me that I need to have _their_ disk to perform the reinstallation.
I think that's wrong. Mac OS X installation disks are now all the same. Newer ones might have newer drivers for newer machines, but outside of that, so long as a person has a license to that version of Mac OS X which was on their computer, they can use whatever media they like. If they own a Mac, they have a license already to the version it came installed with.
I don't believe there is any breach of license or copyright here by simply having our own archive of installation media for Macs, so long as we install the same version that corresponds with their computer's default setup.
I do realize that doing this will lose their iLife installation and any other third-party software that they had their computer configured with, but I can say personally that I'd be more glad to have a working computer and no Office than a non-working computer and Office.
Anyone have some thoughts? I'd like someone with more IP/legal knowledge to share their thoughts.

I brought it up to find out that every user created on the computer is password protected. I've been trying to get past it, but it's impossible. I can't afford an install CD, resetting the PRAM and the PRU doesn't do a thing, and Open Firmware is a pain. Is there any way to get into the iMac without having to buy a disc or go all around town trying to find the original owner so I can get his passwords?

I'm trying to restore my Macbook (white) to factory defaults and I can't get the disk to boot and am having trouble. Whenever I load the disk in and restart holding c, the disk spins and then spits out and the computer boots to Mac OS X (Leopard). I've reset the nvram, the pram, repaired permissions with no success. I used to have Bootcamp installed, but I read that may cause problems so I uninstalled it and it still won't work. These are the grey disks that came with the computer when I bought it new a few months ago so I know they work. They say Mac OS X Disc 1/Disc 1. Any suggestions to getting the disk to boot instead of spit out?
