MacBook Air :: Custom OS X Install With Recovery Disc?

May 6, 2009

I was installing a retail version of OS X the other day on a Dell Mini 9 and I realized you could customize the install by removing printer drivers and languages that you didn't want... saving about 8+ GB or so of space. I was wondering if the recovery disc that comes with our Air also allows us to customize what options we can include, assuming I do a fresh install.

MacBook Pro :: Factory Reset - Cannot See "Erase & Install" Option

Jun 23, 2010

with the new macbook pros, when I follow these steps I dont see an "erase & install" option anywhere. When it says select the destination, only my harddrive appears. When I double clicked on it, an option box came up but nothing said "erase and install". Am I missing something: How to 'Erase and Install' on Macintosh computer that came with Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard and later Part One: Installing the operating system

1. Power on the computer.
2. Insert the Mac OS X Install DVD into the optical drive.
3. Restart your computer.
4. Hold down the Option key while the computer starts up.
5. Select the OS X Install DVD and click the arrow underneath it to boot to the install DVD.
6. When the Mac OS X Leopard Installer screen appears, click Continue.
7. When the license agreement appears, click Agree.
8. Select the destination and click Options.
9. Select Erase and Install and click OK. The arrow on the destination changes to a green and a note on the bottom of the screen indicates you have chosen to erase the volume you selected
10. Click Continue. An Install Summary screen appears.
11. Click Install. A status bar appears on the bottom of the screen while Mac OS X installs.
12. An Additional Information screen appears, advising you that you operating system has been installed. This screen advises you that the bundled applications have not yet been installed. Click Continue.
13. An Install Succeeded screen appears. Click Restart.

OS X :: Option To Clone Install Disk, Don't Need To Clone?

Aug 30, 2010

I have a Macbook running on snow leopard and I wanna upgrade my internal hard drive as it is currently too small. I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner and cloned my entire hard drive to an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Now, I have that new internal hard drive from wester digital. What do I do with it? replace the current internal hard drive with the new harddrive and then how do I get the data from the external hard drive with my cloned data to the fresh western digital? Do I boot first from external hard drive etc? I am not sure what to do now?when I was given the option which hard drive to clone (or which part of the hard drive to clone) there was also the option to clone "Install Disk". I don't need to clone that, right?

MacBook Pro :: Finding MBP Custom Designs?

Jul 29, 2007

I'm about to get my brand new MBP in the mail and was wondering the best way to make it individual on a budget with little technical experience. I've seen some MBPs with interesting artistic designs on the back of the screen and was wondering where to buy those. Not a full color stick or anything like that, just the simple white design. For example, Kevin Rose's MPB with the DIGG logo etched in or the Ad MBP with all the different companies names etched in. I want something simple and stylish like that, only more artistic and less advertising (e.g. no words).

OS X :: Looking For Custom Folder Icons In Dock?

Jul 27, 2009

I am customizing my brand new iMac 24". Just switching from M$! I changed the default icon of my folder and I put it on the Dock. Everything fine, but the dock seems to adopt the icon of what it is INSIDE the folder, not the custom icon of the containing folder.

I wonder if I can force Dock to respect the custom icon of the folder (when there are several documents inside the folder, Dock uses the standard icon - not the new, custom one).

Then after i go idle and come back to my computer Adium has the damn default away message up again. Is there some preference where once you go idle for a certain time it automatically defaults the away message? I know this might be a silly problem but it's very annoying. my custom messages are all saved and appear on the list they just dont stay up after a while.

OS X :: Custom Resolution/(MacBook At 720p?)

I am wanting to record screen casts. But there's one thing I displike a lot. Computer screens are 16:10 (mine are 1920x1200 and 1280x800).

However I'd love to record the screencast in 720p (1280x720) on my MacBook. Is there any way to set my MacBook's screen to 1280x720?

SwitchResX is the only app I found. However I would prefer a free method and something that eats itself into your system slightly less..

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Custom Metadata In Spotlight?

Mar 2, 2012

If you open Spotlight using Ctrl+F, you get an interface for advanced queries. Under "Kind", you can select "Other..." and Spotlight opens a list of "search attributes". It's a long list but of course not complete. Question: is there a way to add custom metadata attributes that can be read by Spotlight? I am willing to get my hands dirty with plists and such, or perhaps there is some freeware add-on that can facilitate this?

1. I can create a new search attribute for OS X files -- let's call it "foo".

2. I can attach the value "bar" to the metadata attribute "foo", e.g. for the file "myFile.txt".

3. I can write an AppleScript that takes a file name as a parameter and returns the value of the "foo" attribute. I.e., I give it "myFile.txt" and I get "bar" as the result.

4. I can use spotlight to search for "bar" and get all files with this metadata.

5. (Optional) I can use spotlight to search for "foo:bar" and get "myFile.txt".

I have looked at a bunch of things on the Net (OpenMeta, SpotMeta, etc.) but I haven't found anything yet that will do this.
