I'm trying to put a custom icon on my external drive, I've tried different graphics, different file sizes and formats, etc. and this is all I can get out of it. I'm probably missing something obvious but I've tried everything I can think of, and a MRoogle search turned up nothing.

I used to use my HP external drive for time machine, but since i got a new bigger WD one to use with time machine i have wiped the HP using disk utility but it is still showing up on the desktop with a time machine icon. i think i can still use it like a normal hard drive but it is causing a bit of confusion and its really irritating!! is there any way that i can change it back? i've tried wiping it a few more times but it still won't work..
custom icons don't show up. I try to put a custom icon on a folder and it comes up the filetype it is. Like if it's an Apple icon I'm putting on a folder, it will just show .ICNS on top of "Preview" app icon.I know how to change the icon, right click, get info and drag the new icon where the current one is in the info box, so whats up?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've changed my stack folder from its default icon so I can recognize what's in it i.e. Microsoft Office 2008. But in order to do this, I've needed to create a folder and have it appear first i.e. 0_Icon_Microsoft_Office_2008 How do I hide this folder? Quite annoying to see this folder as it's sole purpose is for changing the icon pic. And if I hide it, will the system recognize this folder for custom icon purposes?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a couple of Windows systems on my home network, and it gets a bit confusing when I've got 2 mounted volumes on my desktop both called "Users", as it's not possible to see which one relates to which PC.
Is it possible to use a custom icon for a particular volume so I can visually differentiate between the two? If so, how do I do it?
And no, changing the name of the Windows share is not an option!

I have created a PDF of a showreel (Text + Images) and want the user to see one of these images when they have the PDF Icon on their desktop etc.

Installed WoW a while ago, and played a bunch. Then I installed CandyBar, and changed some icons (including the WoW icon) and then WoW no longer worked. It gave me an error message about changing files or something I can't remember now.Anyway, has anyone else run into this problem, or know how to avoid it (aside from the obvious 'don't use CandyBar')?
View 2 Replies View Relatedwe just purchased a WD Elements 250Gb external hard drive for our eMac PowerPC G4 running 10.4.11. We bought the hard drive as our computer keeps popping up with a message saying "Start up disc out of memory" or something to that effect.When we plug the external hard drive in, the blue light appears on it but the icon does not pop up on the desktop to be able to drag stuff onto it. We have tried unplugging and replugging and we have tried rebooting the computer with the hard drive still attached.

It's plugged in and sometimes the icon shows up and I mainly use it to back-up everything on my computer.Sometimes when I plug or unplug on either side it miraculously shows up and it's fine. I just got a new computer and my consultant told me to back up everything on my old computer to the external drive.However, now, the icon doesn't want to show up so I can do this. I've unplugged, replugged, restarted, etc.

While using my MacBook to access an external drive which is formatted Fat32, I attempted to slightly alter the name of a file with a particularly long file name. Once I changed the name, the file extension was cropped, and the file became inaccessible. Now I can see that the file is there (with no extension at the end of the name), but if I click on it or highlight it, it just disappears, and when visible, in place of the file icon there is just a dashed line box. The file is also visible with Terminal, but if I try to take any action Terminal reports that there is "no such file or directory."
I tried DiskUtility, DiskWarrior and File Buddy but apparently they don't work too well with the Fat32 format. I also tried repairing permissions, restarting the computer, disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive, and also rebuilding the desktop (?) using alt-command on startup...all to no avail. It's clear what happened: I screwed up - I should have reformatted the drive before I put any files on it, right? But now, I just want my file back. I know it's there. I can see it, and I'm afraid to alter the drive in any way until I can access this file.
I have updated to OSX.7.4 but but now my external hard drive icons have disappeared from my desktop? The disks are recognized in disk utility and the "show external disks" is ticked in Finder Prefs. Disk Utility did show some errors in 2 or 3 of the disks which have been corrected. It is just since updating to the latest version of Lion this has happened. They are linked via eSATA cables and are in two Sonnet containers (4 hard drives in each). CF cards show up OK. My back up Chronosync, fails to run as it does not recognise the disks.

I have screwed up my permissions on 2 of my external drives, very important info on both. The disk icons have a small lock in the corner and I cannot read or write to them. Get info brings up a permissions window that says "Custom" where the read write should be. It will not let me change these.

I currently use this as a time machine and it has been working for about a year. This has happened before and just a simple re-plug of the usb does the trick, but i have been working on this for hours and for some reason it is not showing up. I have unplugged everything and re plugged them back in and nothing is working. i have checked the disk utility and the disk utility recognizes it. but i still dont know why it doesn't have an icon. i am running a repair disk on the external HDD now and it and it has been "repairing" for about 30 min now. i have tried to backup but it is not working either.
my mac has a pioneer dvd drive in it and it wont read my dvd+r dl and I am wanting to burn a mac os 10.5.dmg to it and install 10.5 but the dang thing is ejecting it. So what should I do to get it to work get the external dvd and run it from it or get a external hard drive and try it that way.

My intended backup strategy is to have all my documents on an external 1 Tb USB3 drive (i.e, not in the MacBook Pro) and to back up that drive AND my Macbook (system, applications, mail etc) to another, powered 2Tb drive. I’m assuming I’ll have to partition the 2Tb drive first, by the way.

I am getting an external drive today to store music, photos, etc. Simply enough to set them up and have items go directly to it instead of internal drive? I know it is, just want peace of mind
MY big ?...I have lots of music on itunes on my pc...can I take it off the pc and out onto the external to use with my imac? Still have to do two separate partitions, or? Or, easier to get all my music onto ipod, then use Expod to download to the external? Once it is all on the external, how do I call it up, easily? itunes automatically search to play music from it and save new music to the external or do I have set it up or assign things differently?
I'm new to macs and haven't quit figured out what the icon on the desktop is after downloading something..the icon looks like a drive or what ever you call it.
Do you just keep those there or just eject them? Is there a way to DL items and not have that show up there each time?
In other words... I have moved my music library to the external hard drive, as per an earlier thread I read here on the forums. It worked like quite well. Now that it is working perfectly, I am having a hard time leaving well enough alone. It is never a good idea for me to think too much...Can itunes be installed and run on/from an external hard drive? If so, how?

I have a Intel Dual-Core Intel Xeon. I boot from FW drives all the time. A client came in with their OS on a WD My Book Studio LX. I plug in via FW 800, but holding the option key on boot does not display the clients FW/OS drive. I can go into startup disk, select their drive from there, but when the computer restarts I get to the grey Apple screen and it just stays there spinning and then the Mac restarts itself.
One strange addition; when I boot to my good OS, their drive shows up with an internal drive icon as opposed to the regular FW icon. they brought their new 8-core system off their bus and we are able to boot off that computer from the FW drive no problem.
I'm having some trouble changing my hard disk's icon... I can't select it in Get Info to paste in a new icon. It happened randomly after I pasted in one icon, subsequently I couldn't select the icon again...
I have tried repairing permissions and my disk (just via Apple's Disk Utility) and that did absolutely nothing.
I haven't tried changing it over Target Disk Mode and for all I know that might work... but I would kind of like to be able to change my icon without turning off my computer.
I remember in OS 9 you had to make sure File Sharing on the disk was off before you were allowed to modify the icon. I'm aware that that's not how it works in OS X but I tried it for good measure anyway to no avail.
I'm running 10.4.6 on a MacBook Pro 2 GHz. The drive whose icon I'm trying to change is my Startup Disk. I have ~10GB/100GB free on it.
I recently installed the whole Boot Camp deal and (obviously) had to repartition my disk. Afterwards my Mac HD was unaccessible until I ran Disk Utility off my install CD to repair it. Although this icon problem cropped up about a week after the install, I suppose it's possible that it could be related. Interestingly enough, I'm having no problems changing my Windows partition's icon.
