I started using my iMac today (not this gen the last gen) and it was fine yesterday but today it has been extremely slow. Its only a year old and now its suddenly taking 30 seconds to open up Finder and Mail and Chrome take a long time to start up. Also I noticed that the 3 buttons (red, orange, and green) at the top left of every window are grayed out.
View 6 RepliesOne obvious thing I've noticed on a mac is the close window [x] minimize window [_] and maximize window buttons are on the right on a windows. On a Mac they are on the opposite left side. What I am wondering is there a way to switch those buttons on the left side on a Mac to the right. Which I am accustomed to it? It there anyway or is it just something, I will have to adjust to.
View 19 Replies View RelatedI have a 4 TB Western Digital external hard drive that I use with my MacBook Pro, running Mavericks. When I plug it in, I get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer", with the option of either ejecting or ignoring. So, I ignore it, and the drive is, in fact, both readable and writeable. So, this is a minor annoyance at worst, unless it truly does become unreadable.
I opened Disk Utility. The disk is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled), there's a single partition of the proper size, and both the disk and the partition show no errors when I run Verify Disk. The disk permissions buttons are both greyed out, and owners enabled shows "no".
This doesn't happen with other external hard drives I use. However, when I connect the other hard drives, they appear in Disk Utility immediately below my internal hard drive and above my SuperDrive, while the problematic external drive appears below the line that appears underneath SuperDrive.

I purchased a used Macbook Pro from ebay. Appeared to be in good working order when I first started working with it, but I have updated from OS X 10.9.2 to 10.9.5 and downloaded Open Office program, set up my mail and went through the system preferences and personalized it. Also ran disk utilities. Then, this AM, when I restarted, the header icons on the right side are grayed out except for the battery %, the date and time and notifications. Also, in mail and safari, the toolbar buttons are blank (forward, back, print, mail, bookmarks, autofil, history and downloads). I went to the disk utility from the recovery partition (repaired disk and disk permissions). I also reset parameters. Don't know what to do next. Not sure if this is a hardware or software problem, but I am assuming it is software (OS X) related at this point.

I cant seem to subscribe to any podcasts in itunes. all the subscribe buttons are greyed out. Im new to mac and this is the first time ive tried so maybe im doing something wrong. I have a mac mini with leopard and the latest version of itunes. I tried to log into the store but it asks for my credit card which i don't want to give.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an aluminium iMac, 2.4GHz Intel C2D, 2GB RAM, running Leopard.On one account, it runs slowly, with a noticeable delay in doing anything, even menus take a second do to anything once they've been clicked.It has all the updates installed and I've tried repairing the permissions and rebooting already.
Since I've only noticed it on one account, I'm inclined to think it's a corrupted user file or something.
My PPC G4 iMac is slow as hell. I plan on upgrading soon enough to a newer iMac but in the meantime I'd love to recover some speed. I know i have a woefully low amount of RAM - 768 to be exact - but apparently I'm stuck with that. It was running better in the past but with time things just slowed to a crawl with minimal things open - Mail, Safari and maybe Word and Excel. I gave up trying to run PS Elements 3 on this machine. That just makes me want to scoop my eyes out with a spoon.
I run iClean regularly, I have my desktop clear of clutter. What can I do in the interim before I buy the new iMac to help things some? Or am I just S.O.L. and just be patient and wait for the new machine?
My iMac is running slow and sometimes freezes. There shouldn't be a problem with memory (6GB); the backup HD is a 1GB WD and backup is run via Time Machine. Backup seems to run OK but there is an enormous drain on CPU usage and the process takes forever.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy 8 gigs of RAM came today! Now I have 10 gigs in my Mac Pro. The first thing I wanted to do was to play a game in Parallels under Windows XP (32 bit, for now). However, upon booting into XP in Parallels and running the game, half the graphics are not displaying (very choppy) and I can hardly even move my mouse it's so slow. I right clicked My Computer and hit properties and it showed only 512 megs of RAM being used. I went into Parallels settings and changed Memory Allocation from automatic to custom and cut the RAM in half by moving the slider to the middle (4~5 gigs for Windows and 4~5 for Leopard, which is fine), rebooted the Virtual Machine and it still showed 512 megabytes, and the game was still slow. I know that my system recognizes the RAM because in About This Mac it shows 10 gigs.

And now I can't start the computer again. It stops at the grey screen with the apple symbol like its loading but never does. I've tried unplugging the whole thing then again got a blinking question mark folder. I just keep getting different things. A blank white screen.

Anyway we have had the system now for over a year we all love it and have worked out the basics. My iMac will be 3 years old Oct 19 2010 and it's running pretty slow. I do a lot of video editing and have 1GB of memory ( I think that's the RAM). I'm pretty sure that's not the right amount of RAM I should have for the things I'm doing but I could be wrong. I have about 5 apps open at once for recreational use and about 2 for video editing, those 2 being Final Cut Pro and iTunes. So would it be my low amount of RAM causing my computer to slow down or another reason?

I have a 27-inch, Mid 2011 running the 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5. I currently have 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 in four slots (4 each).
When I uploaded OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 and shortly after uploaded CleanMyMac 2 I started to experience tremendous latency in processing speeds on all applications. Running CleanMyMac 2 multiple times and removing no longer used apps to free up space did little to resolve the issue.

I was talking to a friend last night and he was saying him mom had a 4 year old iMac that she had barely used. Her windows computer died and the local computer shop moved everything to the iMac and when the mom complained the iMac was slow the computer shop told her it had blown caps. To me blown caps wouldn't cause it to run slow, lock up and be unreliable I would believe but not slow. Has anyone had a Mac just run slow because of blown capacitors?
View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently I started suffering pretty bad from color wheel load time where safari was getting glitchy and taking forever to move. I tried to cold start it to see if a refresh would help. Well it white screened, and wouldnt exit the loading screen. I reset the ram memory with alt ctrl p and r; this did nothing. Eventually I kissed all my music projects and logic pro 9 good bye, and reformatted from the boot disc. When I went to use it, I got out of the white screen, but was ridiculously slow.
Thinking maybe I didn't do the partition right, I reformatted again, erased the entire drive, set the partition, and loaded 10.6. Any time I open safari, it gets glitchy, and incredibly slow to the point I cant even restart. I cleared the memory again and this still did nothing. I purchased and installed new ram; still nothing. Coming from windows a reformat usually takes care of things. I have no idea what I can do at this point. Its a 2007 24" 2.4 ghz 2gb RAM.
My late 2010 iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 12gb of ram is running very slow. It takes a very long for the computer to boot with the desktop taking ages to fully load. Applications are also taking an unholy amount of time to load with the spinning wheel always appearing through out use, and they often crash or don't respond and close during use. I'm talking applications like Word taking 3 minutes to load and getting the spinning wheel when font size is tried to be changed and crashing and closing if a large volume of text is attempted to be pasted into a document.The computer is also failing to shut down properly just staying on a blue screen. I recently wiped and completed a fresh install however the issues came back.

I have a 20" iMac mid 2007 2.4Ghz, 320GB, 2Gb machine running Snow Leopard. Today I turned it on and it was running fine. But around three hours of using it suddenly froze. I had to force the turn off using the power button. When i turned it back on it took about 4 mins to get to the login screen. Once I logged in the spinning wheel came up and the only think that loaded was the Spotlight sign. This kept happening until about the third time of turning it off and on. When it finally completed login. But it is now extremely slow and it just about freezes when I open more than one application.
View 4 Replies View RelatedLast week I got a malware attack from opening up a Facebook message. This caused my iMac to run very slow and to crash all the time. I ran the latest security update which found and removed the malware itself. But still my iMac is running very slow and crashing when doing two jobs at once.
Any reason as to why?Is it still infected? or has the malware corrupted my hd or memory?

This has just started happening. If I press the volume buttons they take about 3-4 seconds to respond...if not longer sometimes. Everything else seems to be working even those I'm getting more beach balls than normal. The system is up to date, the issue seems to go away when I restart temporarily.

I downloaded the trial version of adobe cs5 to check if it runs ok but when I am starting things from scratch like just creating things from a blank canvas it runs so slow like trying to paint stuff and render it comes up with a loading screen it just doesn�t do it straight away. But when I am working on photos it seems to run ok. Is there away to solve this issue? Do I need to updated my RAM to make it run smooth?
View 3 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know or have the same problem where pressing the F7, F8, F9 keys (which are previous, stop/pause, and forward) doesn't work in iTunes unless iTunes is the "active" window? I know that in OS X that if i pressed those buttons, it would do it even if I was in another application, but in the Windows 7 version it won't do it if another application is "active." Also, the same applies to the Apple Remote.
