View 1 RepliesNormally, a Folder "Date Modified" does not change unless the folder itself changes (name, etc). Is it possible to "force" a Folder "Date Modified" timestamp to change when an enclosed file is changed/updated? I want to look at a folder and know the date/time of the latest enclosed file/folder change. This is especially important to me when using syncing apps as I want to visually see by a folders date that a sync has occurred (the actual file change may be deeply nested within the folder.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy own account login items list in my systems preferences window is limited to one item- an istat menus helper app. But my mac hd/library/StartupItems folder contains two items that I don't recognize and don't think have much to do with starting up the computer. One is a Qmaster folder and another is named RDUSB00A3Startup. Each folder contains a few items, including a unix executable file and a plist file. My mac hd/system/library/StartupItems folder is empty. Can anyone please advise on whether the items in my mac hd/library/StartupItems folder are necessary and if deleting them could affect my computer? I don't use Qmaster and have no idea what the RDUSB00A3Startup folder is for.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently started working for a web design company, we use a Mac G5 Tower with Leopard Server installed. What I need to do is, if at all possible, disable file permissions so that anyone on the network can make changes to a file without having to change the permissions first. Right now, after a file is created the permissions have to be changed to allow everyone else to make changes if needed. Is there a way to disable file permissions in order to avoid this problem altogether? I personally run Linux, as such I am not a Mac guru so any help will most likely need to be in basic terms so I don't get lost.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm sure many of you know how using bootcamp can cause slow startups when switching OS's because it has no cache to use. For example I'll be in Windows and then need to swap back over to Leopard to get something done, but it takes forever. The worst part is the list of login items... I've tried using scripts to separate them by 10 seconds or so, but nothing really made it faster. I was wondering if it was possible to login but cancel or disable the startup items for that login that one time... Sometimes I just need to login to grab something off the internet or something quick, but it takes me awhile because I have to wait for everything to load.
Do I make any sense? :P
And no, safe startup mode does not count. I don't want to disable the entire system... just the login items.
] Trying to use ChronoSync to sync Mail between my MacPro (source) and my MacBook (target). For some reason most (not all) of the Folders end up with a red - in them on the MacBook. How do I just set all Folder permissions to Everybody (will this work?) on my MacPro so I can sync and not have a problem (or at least move on to the next one )? There are far too many Folders to go through one at a time. Already spent 30 minutes and finely ended up deleting one by mistake. Is setting to Everyone the way yo do it? Who is Staff and why does my name on the MacPro get changed to Nobody on the MacBook even though it is the same on both?
View 6 Replies View RelatedIt is very tiring and time consuming to set permissions to a folder and then doing the same all the way down to the last subfolder.
Does anyone know of a way to do it all at once?
I put an external USB drive into my Macbook Pro, to transfer some files from it to a PC. I wanted to delete a file from a folder that I've just copied, but the file would just pop right back on.I've tried to erase the whole drive, Disk Utility couldn't. Tried to use sudo chmod 755 on the volume, it said that I only have read only previliges.

I'm using mac os x server as SMB file sharing server and i got some issues with permissions.Â
I try to use POSIX permissions. I put :
owner -> read & write
group -> read & write
other -> read onlyÂ
And after propagate these permissions it's working fine.
Until an user create a folder or a file and i see that the permissions of it are :
owner -> read & write
group -> read only
other -> read onlyÂ
I have set default permissions on new files and folder for this sharepoint with the great permissions for the group. But it didn't work..Someone have a solution ?

I have two users on my mac and am having some issues with sharing files. I created a shared folder and gave the other user read/write permissions. When I log in as that user, the folder can be accessed, but some of the files in that folder cannot be accessed. These are all photos, and for the most part I'm dropping them into the shared folder from iPhoto. Â
I tried it again by using the Public folder with the same result. However, there isn't consistency with the actual files that don't have permission. In other words, the shared folder I created may have a file that does not have permission, but that same file does have permission when I dropped it in the Public folder. So it is totally random as to which files in the shared folder don't have permission to be accessed. Â
I also tried to simply drag the files to the other user. Same result.
I'd like my mac to monitor a specific folder, say 'TV Shows' and if a new file is added I'd like it to automatically put it into iTunes under TV shows, is this possible or is anyone aware of an application / script
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo a few days ago, I noticed my Applications Folder shows 0 items. EDIT: My "Macintosh HD > Applications" has my Applications. However, "Macintosh HD > Users > ~~ > Applications" doesn't. What's the difference between the two? And if my Apps are in the Apps folder under "Places", what's the point of the one under my name?
View 8 Replies View RelatedIs there a simple way to keep folders and all the folders within a folder organized - my desktop stays arranged but it seems like every time I go into a folder it looks like it has been hit by a bomb - so I go to View/Keep arranged by/Date and everything is fine until the next time I open the folder to discover that - as often as not - it has returned to its' bombed state - I only use one configuration and would like to set it as the default - I have tried doing that by going thru View/Show View Options making any changes and setting new defaults but that doesn't seem to do anything.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running on 10.9.3. I was working on my remote server and I selected files I wanted to create a new folder. By Right-clicking on the selected files and choose “New Folder with Selection (x items). The process was new to me and in the middle of it, I cancelled it. Now the original files are missing and there is not a new folder with the selected files. Did they get deleted or are they located somewhere else on the server?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI frequently want to grab a ton of junk on say my desktop and sort them into folders. Process is "make new folder, select all the items I want to go in it, drag them to it, name folder, move folder to where I want". What I want it to be able to do is select all those items and have a contextual menu command "Make New folder from selected". Ideally, popping up an Open/Save dialog letting me choose where to put the new folder and allowing me to name it. On closing dialog, I have my new renamed folder with all my selected stuff in it, wherever I want on my HD with no extra dragging and clicking. Does this sound worthwhile to anyone else? Am I missing some way that this can be done? Seemed like an obvious thing to me, was kind of puzzled to discover (AFAIK) no way to do it.

My user is an admin (turns out I'm the only user as well), but when I open this file (it's plain text) in text edit it gives me an error on save saying that I don't have permissions for the folder that it's in. View 3 Replies View RelatedI restored from backup OS X 10.5.8 Leopard using Time Machine to a brand new drive. After manually migrating some data to the newly restored boot drive I accidentally replaced the /Library/receipts folder with an out dated receipts folder. The problem is there is no way to get the proper receipts folder back so I'm stuck with a receipts folder filled with permissions that are not in sync with the list. I'm assuming this blunder is causing the error: The underlying task reported failure on exit, every time I try to repair permissions. I need this boot drive to be stable and want to avoid installing from DVD the OS from scratch. The drive checks out ok with every test accept repair permissions. The system is running VERY stable now on this brand new WD Caviar Black 1 TB drive. Do you think it's safe to clone this drive even though repair permissions won't work anymore?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was trying to find a way for items in a folder to get sorted by recently added. In other words, I would like a certain folder to sort everything in the order I throw them in. The problem is that all the items have different dates, names, size, etc., so the usual sorting methods don' achieve what I want and I would prefer not to have to modify the item names cause it gets confusing with all the items I have. The way the folder behaves by default also starts to fail when you reach the maximum window size, it starts to put some items on the right side and others on the bottom, in no particular order. I was thinking of using a Smart Folder or Automator, but nothing I've tried seems to work.

I would like everything on my desktop mail account to be exactly the same as what I see online as far as read messages, unread messages and of course, the sent items that I have sent should be logged on the original mail account as well as on my computer.Â
I have already enabled "store sent messages on the server."

Is there a way to see the number of items in a folder shown in finder?
Seems to me that in earlier versions, if you had a folder with 100 items (e.g., photos) in a folder in a finder window, when you clicked on the folder, something like "100 Items" would appear at the bottom of the finder window. I don't see this now in Lion.

I have searched for this as much as possible but am not finding any conclusive answer and am not a techy enough to try and figure it out myself. My laptop restarted itself last night for no reason and when i restarted it, all the items on the desktop were no longer there and in the Macintosh HD folder there was a ~ file with what seemed like a system dump (approx 500kb in size) Now Firefox and iTunes no longer work. iTunes says it can not find the library file. Here are some images of what it looks like: [URL:...] and here is the log from around that time too. [URL:...] This happened 6 months ago when i tried to install CS 3 suite and i had to reinstalled OSX and start all from scratch. If i delete the file and restart the laptop, the file returns, and then it begins to no longer recognize external hard drives and the only way to access them is via Terminal. i am backing up what i can for the moment but would prefer to know what has happened and how to fix it.
