OS X :: Crashes When Usb Storage Device Are Plugged In?
Apr 17, 2009
The Mac Mini has been going through this strange cycle where anytime I plug in an external hard drive or a flash drive it forces me to hold down the power button to turn it off. If I try booting the Mac Mini with the HDD or flash drive plugged in, it refuses to boot

When I bought my 13" MBP I swapped out the 160 GB stock HDD with a 320 GB one. The 160GB HDD is just laying around now and I would like to use it as an external storage device.

Is there or will there be a way for us to store all our data/files on our Mac Book Pro up to iCloud now or sometime soon.Appears Apple is moving us to store all our data/files/music/ video etc.on iCloud. Will we soon be able to back-up our files to iCloud using "Time Machine"?

I get this strange message every so often, sometimes more often than other times. It says:
USB port drawing too much power. The device that is plugged into it will be deactivated.
There are only two things plugged into the USB-The keyboard and mouse. When I get this message, the mouse freezes. If I jiggle the mouse cable where it is plugged into the USB, it comes back and everything is fine until this message comes up again.

I have a few questions about hard drive formatting and transferring. I currently have an imac i7 running snow leopard. I want to set up a workflow for archiving my personal files as well as client files. I do a lot of video work and I really like to save my stuff. I currently have a raw 1tb 7200rpm samsung running with a harddrive thermaltake reader. I would like to use the samsung 1 tb as an archiving disk. I have looked into drobo and those nice arrays, but I cannot afford it currently. What format should I format the 1tb? I want it as safe as can be. I plan to just store things. So I assume it will only need to be mac accessible, since I understand fat 32 only allows 4 gb transfers.
Should I format my storage drive to Mac os extended (journaled)? And that leads me to my second question. Natively I had already copied a bunch of my stuff to the 1tb harddrive when I first got it because my pc laptop was dying. So it is now a Fat format with stuff on it. I let the harddrive copy onto my desktop overnight in preparation of reformatting the drive. I hit get info on the folder on my desktop and compare to get info of the drive itself. There is about a 3 gb discrepancy between the folders. Where did the 3 gb go? And why? And HOW should I transfer files to make sure ALL of the documents are transferred?

How do I get my Canon Powershot SD400 to show up as a plain-old USB SD card reader in Leopard?
I'm trying to use PhotoRec to recover some deleted photos off of a SD card. While programs like Image Capture can read and copy pictures from the Camera directly, I need the camera to show up as a plain USB SD card so that I can access it from Photo Rec.

I want to move my imovie files over to the room I have on my spare hard drive. I'm down to only 24 GB on my macbook pro, because of this big project I just finished. Is there a way for me to move all of the files I no longer need? Also, if I have to access them, how easy is this? I have a macbook pro.

I recently bought a WD Passport Essential to back up my Macbook. When I plugged in the WD Passport, my Mac asked if I want to use this storage device for my Time Machine.
1. Should I use the WD Passport as the Time Machine storage device or use the WD Passport software to run back-ups?
2. If I use it for my Time Machine, will I be able to access my files on other machines?
3. Is it possible to have files stored on the WD Passport, such as photos, but not have those files on my Macbook... if I am using the Passport for back-ups?

Itunes used to work fine, but now crashes every time I plug my iphone in. It gets partway through the sync, then quits with no error message. If I stop the syncing, itunes is fine. If I then select my iphone in the left hand column, iTunes crashes. My iphone is set to wirelessly sync. Am I supposed to affect any change if itunes won't allow me to change any syncing settings. Really, if it is wireless, it needs to be configured from the phone, not itunes...

I currently have 1 PC (Windows7) and 1 MBP (Snow Leopard) in the house, the PC has 2 additional HDDs attached with movies and music on them and they are in NTFS format. I can view the contents on my PC via my wireless G network on my Macbook through sharing etc. Now my problem is that I'm getting rid of the PC (hopefully for an iMac in the future) but right now what sort of device would I need to build/buy to attach the 2 NTFS HDDs to the network so my MBP can still access the media on them?

I am new here. I am a linux guy (pour me the hate mails), I don't use a mac. But so it happens, I am now needed to backup files automatically from a Macbook Pro notebook to a NAS device that is attached to the wireless router. The Macbook has some files in it, and a lot of them are constantly updated. The user of the Macbook roams around the building. There is only one NAS device. Can somebody please suggest/recommend a good backup software for this kind of use here?I tried Bonkey. For the life of me, I cannot configure it. It doesn't help.

I have saved my dead laptop's HD as an external which has lots of iPhoto images/videos on it & only connects to an older laptop. I also have another laptop with more iPhoto images/videos... my problem is that I don't have a burner to get the images off these HD's nor do I know how to combine all the images on an external. Is it possible to (like in iTunes) assign an alternate device for storage of your iPhoto library. I don't see that option in iPhoto.I only have these two old laptops with OSX (10.3.9) an am running out of disk space

I have a 2006 Intel Macbook with a crashed hard drive. I'm kinda broke right now, so instead of buying a new hard drive I loaded ubuntu 10.4 onto an external hard drive (USB) and tried to boot the macbook from it. (Failed). I hold down option to launch Startup Manager and all it shows me is a cursor (no drives). I know the external drive is bootable because I a) booted the laptop from a LiveCD and used it to create the hard drive and b) I booted a Dell from the external. I've tried moving the drive to a different USB port, but no chips. I don't have anything else connected to the computer.Â
my question is: Can I boot the macbook from the external hard drive if the internal hard drive is shot?

My boss just gave me a MBP Core I7 2,66Ghz / 4GB Ram, model mid-2010 for the business. It is equipped with Nvidia GeForce GT330M as PCIe video card. If I plug an external monitor, I have, after some time between minutes or hours of work, a weird video problem, which obliged me to power off/on the MBP. Sometimes I even can see my mouse moving, but I can't do anything with it. If I do not use the external monitor I do not have problem. This type of problem appears around 3-4 times a day and make the MBP unusable, as I'm loosing the recent work each time the problem occurred.
Here is the extract of the console at the time of the crash :13/03/12 16:45:51,203com.apple.kextcache/: no supported helper partitions to update.13/03/12 16:47:29,000kernelNVDA(CopyEngine): Channel exception! exception type = 0x27 = CE0:

The problem seems related to NVidia GPU. I've reinstalled everything from scratch without success.

I just upgraded to iTunes 10.6 in a normal mac software update yesterday Now I cannot sync any of my devices. 2 iPhone 4Ss and 1 iPad 1st gen.Whenever I connect a device to sync, iTunes 'crashes unexpectedly' I had to turn of wifi on the iPhone because wifi syncing caused the itunes to crash. I noticed my streaming music kept quitting and figured out it was the syncing that caused the 'unexpected quit's.
Music not playing is a minor inconvenience, but not syncing is a major problem in my household; where we share lots of info via sync.I did notice there was an iOS 5.1 upgrade available for all my devices, and was able to install it on iPhone 1 and the iPad, but I cannot upgrade my wife's iPhone because I need to free up some space on it which requires, you guessed it, attaching it to my mac to access sync preferences.

I use my MBP 15" (the new one), as my primary machine in my office. I sit by my best usually 10-12hrs a day working on it.
I am trying to figure out what is best to do, keep the AC plugged in or have it un-plugged and only plug it in when the battery is drained (or less then 50%)? I have tried different experiments, plugged in, not-plugged and time is about the same for life of the battery. The true question is, how is is best to do it for the health of the battery.

I thought I would share a cool realization. I am now eligible for any iPhone upgrades and most likely will be getting the new one coming out this summer - whatever it may be. I realized today that most likely it will have 64GB of storage - the exact same size as my Macbook Air - I think it is so wild my future phone/pocket computer will have the exact same storage capacity as my main laptop. I could potentially mirror everything on my Mac that is on my iPhone in the future.

Equipment: Mac Mini (Early 2009), Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Lion. I started noticing my Mac Mini was having trouble reconnecting my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, slow processing (spinning pinwheel of death), and programs freezing. I did a recovery within Lion from the recovery drive and it seemed to work for a week or so. It started acting up again. So, I decided to erase the HD and reinstall Lion. I basically use the Mac Mini as a server for all my iTunes content. Â
My iTunes default save location is to my Drobo storage unit. Now that I have reinstalled Lion, I am looking for the easiest, most convenient, and safest way to change the default save location in iTunes and then importing the media. It would be nice if it was possible to just simply change the default save location to the folder I previously had all my media saved in and it would just magically appear in iTunes. Everything was organized perfectly, which took hours of time and attention to details. Â

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini with 8GB of OCZ 1333 RAM and an Intel X25-M 160GB SSD. Running 10.6 fully updated and installed from scratch.I have been getting out of the blue crashes while the system is most of the times idle. Can it be the RAM? It's reported fine as 8GB 1333 DDR under the system info. The Intel SSD runs latest firmware.
This is the log from the last crash which happened a little ago.

I'm getting a 1.25Ghz 15" Al Powerbook assuming I can fix it. It's got one major problem - it won't charge the battery, or see that it's plugged in. This problem just happened suddenly, it wasn't a gradual thing at all, and there was no physical damage that caused it. The Powerbook still booted and worked fine off of a freshly charged battery, but the computer won't charge that battery anymore.
I think it's a broken DC-in board that needs to be replaced, but before I dump $50 - $75 on a new one, can anyone tell me if it might be something else, maybe something I could check for free?

Of course i'll unplug it 2-3 times a month and run the battery down to condition it, but other than that, is it bad to leave it plugged in 24/7, including when not using it and it's turned off?

My white MacBook is not charging when plugged in. And if I take out the cord, the computer dies. I noticed this right after I had made a flight on an airplane so I'm assuming something happened while on the flight, even though I had my computer with me the whole time, and inside the case. I tried using compressed air to try and blow out any debris that might have got into the little charger port, but no luck.

I have had my MacBook Pro since May 2007. It has been working fine up until a few months ago. I will have nearly full, or fully battery and the computer will turn off, and will not turn back on unless I plug the charger in. If the charger is unplugged for 5 minutes, the computer completely shuts down. So basically I cannot use the computer unless it is plugged in. It is starting to become a pain because sometimes I need it when I am in a place without an outlet.

Just wondering, whenever I use my macbook unibody at home, I have it plugged in most of the time. When I take it to school, I don't bring my plug. When I go to sleep, I generally unplug it and put the macbook to sleep. Should I keep it plugged in even though I closed the lid whilst I sleep during the night? Or should I keep unplugged it every night when I close the lid? Also, I do calibrate my battery once a month. its at 93% after 43 cycles.

My 2.4ghz i5 MBP runs a lot better when using discrete graphics. Minimizing and maximizing windows, scrolling, opening folders etc... all run smoother with the 330M. Is there a way to always run the 330M when plugged in, and switch to automatic graphics switching when unplugged? This would be the perfect solution for me.

I recently upgraded my last-gen macbook to a macbook pro 13". I have a feeling there's something wrong with the battery however. On my old Macbook, whenever i let the battery drain completely (After I got the 10 minute warning message), the macbook went into hibernation until I plugged it in. However, on my Macbook pro, whenever I do the same it doesn't go into hibernation. Is there something wrong with my battery or have apple changed how this works?
