OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Utility Starts When Clicking On DMG File

I don't know if this is a problem or not, but recently on my 15" MBP using Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3, clicking on a .dmg file automatically opens Disk Utility. Which is weird, since before this situation happens, opening a .dmg file will not automatically open Disk Utility. I have a screen shot below opening the .dmg file for Firefox installer for Mac OS X. Shouldn't it actually be like this when clicking on a .dmg file? Is there a problem with my MBP or my Mac OS X Lion?

I am fairly new to the Mac world. The other day I was trying to do a disc copy of a music CD. I followed the instructions within Disk Utility, which resulted in a .dmg (disk image) file being created. However, when I went to burn the resulting file to a blank CD I found that the file was bigger than the capacity of the CD. Obviously, the disk image file itself takes extra space (in addition to the size of the original music files). Is there any other way of creating a 'snapshot' of a CD or DVD? Perhaps 'on the fly', as I do with my PC's?

So I have an ISO file that I need to burn onto a dvd, and i bought some double-layer DVD+R's at the shop... And apparently it doesnt work. I mount the image, and then click on Burn.
A pop-up appears for like 2 seconds saying: Finishing Burn. The CD comes out, blank as ever...

I'm trying to use Disk Utility to restore a .dmg backup file stored on an external usb hard drive. The image is a read-only dmg and is 75gb. When I try to restore the 75gb image to a 128gb SSD formatted in OS Extended (Journaled), Disk Utility says that there is not enough space on disk to restore.

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!Â
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.Â
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state!  Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

I'm currently trying to burn a bootable image file using OS X 10.3.9's Disk Utility software. I have an external DVD Burner connected to a G4 Cube via Firewire. The issue is that when I select "burn" from the menu and point to the respective .dmg file, Disk Utility does not recognise the attached DVD burner. The burner is however recognised in Toast (which I also have installed).What might the issue be? I have searched high and low on the net in an attempt to diagnose the issue to no avail. Is there an alternative solution to burning bootable disks in 10.3.9?

I am trying to create a new image from a DVD and burn it to a new DVD using the MAC Disk Utility "New Image" option. The source DVD is 4 G and my target folder is on my external HD which has 298G.. plenty of space. However, whenever I attempt to SAVE the existing DVD to my external HD, I am getting the error message that the file is too large. I have tried the parameter for "Image Format" of both 'Read Only' and 'DVD/CD Master' and neither of them work. My "Encryption" setting is 'None'.

I have been trying to burn a .cdr file to a dual layer dvd using Disk Utility. I got it to work once, but I tried four times. I think that it must be very sensitive or something, because I can't figure out any other factor that affects it.
Has anybody else run into this problem, and if so, what's your solution? I think it may have to do with vibrations of the disk drive or something, but I would be lying if I said I knew that for sure...

I have run the Disk Utility verify function against my system partition. It tells me there are minor issues that need fixing up and I should run the repair disk function, by booting using Command-R and using the Disk Utility to repair the drive.Problem is, when I boot using Command-R and select Disk Utility the partition is shown greyed out and the Verify and Repair options do not work.I think this could be because the partition is encrypted. The utility does not offer me the chance to unlock the partition with my passphrase.How can I repair the filesystem errors on this partition?

Fortunately I got a time machine backup. And its restoring the drive while in Lion recovery mode. Here's what happened... I dont have a router a my place at the moment and so my two phones (iphone 4 and htc android) connect to my internet using my MBP's wifi via internet sharig. For some reason they were not able to get an IP from the mbp. After doing some wifi swtich toggles and forgettig & rejoining the network, i decided to reboot all my devices. I shut down my modem, phones and restarted my mbp. On reboot, after the chime, it showed an unsusal 'progress bar' under the apple logo. The bar progressed to about 10% and then the mbp just powered off. This happened several times even after PRAM and SMC reset. Â
So now i booted with cmd+r pressed and in recovery mode ran a 'verify disk'. It said the verification stopped and that i should repair the disk. When i tried to do that it said the disk cannot be repaird and that i should back up as many files as possible and attempt to format the disk and restore it with time machine. It is precisely what im doing at the moment. Â
1. Mbp wont sleep even when internet sharing is off
2. Mbp wont lit the onboard display upon opening it in clamshell mode until i removed the 3.5mm audio cable of my speakers from the audio out port!Â

I recently ran a ‘verify’ scan in Disk Utility as a precaution after Word crashed. An ‘incorrect number of file links’ error message showed up, as well as a prompt to repair this using Disk Utility from the Recovery HD. However, when I do a scan from the Recovery HD version of Disk Utility, no error messages or repair prompts appear.
My questions… Is this something to be concerned about? How can it be fixed? Would it be best to do a clean install of OSX? I only lost a little bit of data so I was pretty lucky.

I'm running Mac OS X (10.7.3). I need to make an image of my boot disk, before I install a larger HDD in my MBP. My boot disk is greyed out in DU:I had already dragged my com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file to a separate disk (I actually found two - both dragged away), and that disk was selected in DU All I want is to create an image to restore to the larger HDD. I have a 4TB Raid drive on which I have created previous images; now I can't.Â

I just got my computer yesterday and when running the "repair disk" function, I already get an error! Since I used migration assistant to move everything off my old mac to my new mac, I'm not interested in reinstalling the whole OS and transffering all my files again. This is a new computer, and shouldn't have this problem this early. I also get the same result when starting up in the recovery partition. How do I resolve this?

Only started recently but my hard drive sometimes starts clicking when being used thoroughly(like when extracting archives) and then it will make one loud click(sounds like when my pc hard drives go to sleep) and the computer has to be restarted. Should I take into the local apple store or see if it gets worse?

Will running the 'repair disk' disk utility on an external drive screw up any of the files on my external hard drive? I only want to run it because I can't transfer a file from my HD to the external...it's a 6 gig video file in quicktime format, and I'm getting 'error 1309', which I understand is related to file size on FAT32 format. I know it's a huge file, but I've moved others to the external that are over 20 gigs with no problems (iMovie projects, etc). Anything I can do to get this file moved to the external?

I am trying to check my Harddidk by doing a Verify. So I went to Utilities, select the Harddisk, and then click VERIFY.Â
Then I the following message pops out: "Disk Utility stopped verifying "Ryan ManUtd"Â (note: Ryan Utd is the name of my harddisk)Â
Then it the window panel, there is a message which says: "Error: Live file System repair is not supported"Â
What does this mean ? Other than that, I can still access the contents in my harddisk ...Â

Last year I bought a new 17" MacBook Pro, that came with Snow Leopard 10.6. I think it was just before I got my new MBP that I got an invitation to try the Developer Preview of 10.7 and offer feed back. Well, after using my new MBP for a couple days and backing up everything with Time Machine to an external hard drive I downloaded and installed 10.7 Preview.Â
After a few hours of using it I was not happy with it at all (long story short, several things indicated to me this was a pretty early version of 10.7 and I didn't want to use it on this machine). So I erased the drive and restored everything from my Time Machine backup. That must have been around a year ago or so.Â
Now I want to add a 100 GB partition to this hard drive so I can install Lion on the new partition to try it again. But my version of Disk Utility (11.5.2 (298.4)) won't let me add a partition. It looks like it is going to add a partition but then I get "New partition requires a newer version of OS X".Â
I think when I installed the Preview of Lion it did something to my drive/partion for some of the new features it supports. But, if I can get a copy of the Disk Utility that comes with 10.7 would that run under 10.6? And let me add a partition?Â

I was going to run Disk Permissions and when I opened it up, there is a decrypted file.dmg showing. Here is it's path:/var/folders/2d/vmlqi1 d0gzcs7mxi nnl 1w0000gn/T /decryptedFile.dmg...I opened it and saw that it has something to do with installing Adobe Flash Player. I remember downloading and installing it a couple of days ago. I've adonw this previously, but never had the disk image show up in Disk Utility before. How can I get rid of it? It seems to be in a folder calledl "T" that I can't find anywhere.

I'm trying to restore the partitioning of my late 2011 Air drive, after messing it up while trying to dual boot OS X and Linux. The goal is to get rid of the superfluous partitions and resize the OS X one so I can use the whole drive again. I installed Ubuntu on my Macbook but it didn't really work for me so I deleted it. I used Disk Utility to delete the Ubuntu partition, but when I want to delete a Linux-swap partition I made while installing Ubuntu nothing happens. I press the minus button and it will delete it. But after deleting it just stays there, and I can't change the partition in any way. How can I delete the partition?

I cloned my existing SSD (From 96GB to 256GB), everything seems to be working fine.Using 256GB, i am able to boot up and it is working okay. Now I am trying to upgrade to Lion, but it says "This disk cannot be used to start up your computer".Anyone know what could be the reason.Do I have to unplug the 96GB SSD?I tried by ejecting, but still not working.

I just reinstalled Lion from a fresh harddrive. I did not use the migration asistance to pull files over to the new drive, I selested files and dragged them over, So not to fill the drive with things I dont need....Â
So I "Get info" on the main harddrive it shows Which is crazy! Then I use Disk Invintory and it shows: Â Â
and Disk Untility shows: Â Â
Why the difference? Simple question and How do I free up space? I'm also trying to back up using time capsule*

I am trying to make a redundant backup image of my harddrive using something OTHER than Time Machine. I booted to recovery because you image from a disk you are booted from. The restore took 2 hours, and indicated the entire time in disk utility that it was restoring "Mac HD" to a similarly sized partition on my external hard drive. When it was done, the external had a copy of my recovery drive on it. That's crazy talk.

The Finder window shows that I have 302GB of harddrive space remaining, out of 500GB. The Activity Monitor and Disk Utility show I have 240GB space remaining, and my System Profiler shows I have 239GB remaining. I just deleted a bunch of old TV shows off of iTunes (about 40GB worth) to open up some space, but only the Finder changed (up to 302GB from 260GB) but the Activity Monitor, Disk Utility, and System Profiler haven't changed.Â
Now, I'll assume the Finder is showing the correct amount of space, but I'm wondering why the other utilites are showing the incorrent amount of space. I have a feeling maybe something was screwed up when I created a 50GB Windows 7 partition through Boot Camp a couple months ago.Â
I've attempted to Repair Disk through the Disk Utility and it says everything looks fine. Any solutions to this minor inconvenience? Or at least an answer as to why this is happening?

I have an external WD drive in a self-enclosed case, both purchased from OWC, used for my Time Machine backups. The disk and backups have been running just fine since I began using this disk over a year ago.Â
When I plugged in my disk yesterday (USB), it didn't mount. I ran Disk Utility on my 'Time Machine' partition, starting with verify disk. It reported that it needed to be repaired. When I run repair, it runs for several minutes and I see information of what is being done -- incorrect block count for file shutdown_time, incorrect block count for file permStore, etc -- but I always ends with "Disk Utility can't repair this disk" and that it needs to be reformatted.Â
I've run Repair Disk multiple times, all with the same answer so it seems running it again won't change the problem. Reformatting and starting fresh with Time Machine seems to be the only course of actionÂ
What specific issues should I be aware of as I reformat my Time Machine drive/app partition?
