I have a macbook with leoaprd installed. I wish to set it up as an FTP server so that i can remotely access my files. If i do it thru sharing in the system preferences, the ftp server is setup. But its limited to my home network only. How can i share it over the internet knowing that i have dynamic ip and theres no static ip service here.
is there a way to keep the menu bar open always, without altering system codes or erasing system folders? when anything is in full screen, it disappears and I want to see the clock.
I am a proud owner of a MAC powerbook G4 for just over 3 years now. It runs MAc OX 10.3. For the last two weeks i have been having issues. First it started to be very slow. Then it would not boot up and i got a blue screen. I ran the file system checks from the OS X and it complained about the volume being bad and said it could not be repaired. i decided to reinstall the whole thing and did a complete erase and install. IT booted up fine. The software updater asked permission to update which i agreed.
After the update was over, the software updater had more updates. I guessed that it was probably giving me updates in the chronological order. During a particular update, it gave the blue screen and "please restart" ... and when i rebooted it did not come up... just a blue screen... i verified the filesystem using the diagnostic tool and it again said it was corrupt .... I have done this twice now and i have a feeling it happened when i was updating the same batch of software updates.... sometimes my software updater would crash everytime i launch it.....
I was asked to performed a system update with a reboot which I proceeded to do. Once the reboot was complete I had lost my system time (which had been reset to December 31, 2000 and my background had been replaced with the original generic MAC background. I have been unable to find the source of this issue and I am unsure how to fix this. I was able to change my clock by adjusting the Date & Time Preferences and fix my background image as well, but I am concerned that this is a temporary fix. Has anyone else experienced this with a system update?
could not be sure whether the Admin user - password reset with the CD would be the solution to my question as suggested in previous threads I searched - and have no idea where my start up install CD is
So my question-
I was trying to put parental control to ask for password when my computer starts up. I did something I guess and messed up the info.
I can log in with my own account when I restart my apple - which says now it is a standard account (must have messed that up)- but can not make any changes on system preferences or anything else that requires login and password. It requires Admin info. My own login that I use now used to be my admin so do not have any other info set.
now on system pref - accounts - an account titled "test" seems to be admin but can not even access that and reverse myself to be the admin since I can not unlock system pref. Or cant click on "Login Options" for the same reason.
There are no other users on this computer than me.
I have an extensive collection of fonts (60,0000+). Several hundred of them will crash my system when I open one of them in Finder (double-click the suitcase). I picked one at random for some serious examination. I looked at my sample with many font tools. My latest tool was FontDoctor (v5 and v7). FontDoctor reported "no problems found" with my font. Yet the crash persists. Any tool that can do a thorough job of investigating and repairing my corrupt fonts.
I recently took the plunge and installed Lion after being content with Snow Leopard....well now I have quite a few issues. When I open system preferences for some reason it automatically opens to Network...why I'm not sure. When I click show all, then click sharing, I can't make any changes in the Sharing preferences without my entire system locking up. I can't force quit or anything. I can still use the mouse but all I have is the rainbow wheel!
I have searched and searched and haven't been able to fix it. I have tried booting into the Guest account and the same problem happens there. I have trashed all the plist files everyone says to try. I have tried repairing permissions etc. I feel like I have tried everything. Is there anything else that I can do without have to do a clean re-install. I'm hearing if I do this that I won't be able to migrate my files from by backups due to permission problems?
I also took a look at my system log and it is full of this! Jul 3 22:24:26 jessica-imac com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.Kerberos.digest-service[1307]): Exited with code: 1 Jul 3 22:24:26 jessica-imac com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.Kerberos.digest-service): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds .....
I have a g5 with sys 10.5.8 , that I just bought and old mac documents from 10 years ago.
For some reason it will not read them. How does one get old documents translated into something usable.
Secondly, the old system software and applications no longer seem to work with the new machine, is there a way to use those. The mac was always great about being able to use several system folders and their applications.
My hard drive crashed and now I need to reinstalled everything but I'd like to know what would be the latest system version? I have two mac book pro I want to upgrade: the one that crashed is a 12" from 2004 I believe. and a 17" from 2006, this one runs on Mac OSX 10.4.11 which I believe is the latest I can use on this one.
Recently viewed this Apple web page. In Addition to my G5, I have a G3 running 9.2.2. Is there any point in moving later versions of the named files listed in the Apple web page into the System Folder of the G3, or is that just asking for trouble? Improved performance of 9.2.2, or disaster?

How do I install MAC OSX on an iMac that does not have any system installed on it? How to insert the install DVD ( after turning it on)? I have iMac G4
I've been reading this site for a while now, first time I'm posting. I recently purchased 8 GB of RAM for my 2010 13" MBP. There are two 4 GB DDR3 PC3-10500 1333mhz sticks. When I install them in the laptop my computer does not get past the apple logo boot screen (the spinning disc freezes). However, I can boot into Windows (boot camp) without issues.
Also, when I pair either of the 4 GB sticks with one of my old 2 GB stock sticks the laptop boots up fine in OS X. The system profiler registers it as 6 GB of 1067 mhz RAM (the stock sticks are 1067 mhz)
I noticed that my system stopped making system (i.e. Mac OS X) sounds for some reason. Sounds from applications are fine. I checked and unchecked the "play user interface sound effects" check box in the preference panes to no effect.
I punch my iTunes music through an Airport Express to a remote set of speakers in the kitchen, which works wonderfully, but I'd like to know if there's a way to run the system sounds through the AE as well. In particular, I listen to Pandora (through a browser) on my laptop, but would love to listen in the kitchen. Any way to do this? System 10.4 I believe...
I'm going to pull the trigger on a 2.93GHz Quad next week. I want the high clock speed and now that I'm fairly confident it will handle more than 8GB of RAM, I think this is the best bang-for-the-buck choice for me.Here are the RAM options I'm considering...1. Buy it with 3GB installed, wait a month to see what happens to 4GB DIMM pricing and possibly buy 12GB in a month or so.2. Buy it with 6GB installed and then wait for a few or more months for 4GB DIMM pricing to come down and buy 12GB whenever it seems reasonable. Then try to sell the 6GB on ebay.I'm going to go with 12GB sooner or later, it's just a matter of when. The issue with buying 6GB now is that I may not actually save much by waiting for the 3x4GB to come down... depending on how much I can get for the 6GB.
i am downloading a lot of stuff (movies and music) from rapidshare and other file-hosting sites. Do i need a virus scanner or smthing like clean my mac ?? is it ok from downloading and not getting anything from them (trojans..etc)
I've been upgrading my mp1,1 recently, and I'm now wondering what would be the best ram configuration. I'm thinking of getting a minimum of 8 GB. I don't need to max out the machine or anything. It's just that I currently have 2x512MB + 2x1GB = 3GB and I am thinking I should ditch those and get nice matching sticks with more capacity. A few general questions: I hear the mp1,1 takes 667 MHz ram, but can support 800 MHz sticks (it will just run them at 667).
Any purpose in getting 800 (i.e. compatibility with more machines in case I upgrade in the future), or should I just go for the cheapest? I've heard of triple channel ram (i.e. 3 sticks per riser) - does the mp1,1 support that or is it for newer machines only? I've also heard that using 4 sticks on a single riser is the fastest config (or was it 2 sticks per riser?). I'm thinking of getting 4 GB sticks. Can I use 8 GB sticks? Worth it? Basically, I'm wondering what the general consensus is on the ultimate memory config for mp1,1.
A mate of mine had a look at the RAM configuration of my Mac Pro (4x2GB, 2x1GB), telling me it was completely wrong. After the argument we had I decided to take a look at the Apple manual and see what they recommended and I think I followed the instructions right.

I'm unfamiliar with how to perform a system restore on a Mac. On my PC I can just go through the System Tools > Sys. Restore and have my PC almost back to how it was when I bought it.
How can I do this on my Mac?
I don't have the discs it came with, nor can I get new ones.
Since the OS is still 10.5.x, is there any reason I can't use the system drive from my Jan08 Mac Pro in my new Nehalem box?I assume Apple Update will fetch new display drivers?I already have iLife 09.
I downloaded MainMenu which I guess helps clean up my computer a bit. I repaired disk permissions and cleaned out the user and system caches. After this it recommended I reboot the computer so it did so for me. The computer restarted and the first thing on the screen (still up) is asking "where is system events?" with a list of Apps for me to choose.
When I go into system preferences a screen comes up saying my network settings have been changed by another application. I can't delete this or get into system preferences.
Should I get a SSD or a ATA drive in it? I don't store much on my computer as most of my stuff is online, and I write for Triond a lot as well so all my stuff is on the net. The application I'll be using the most is Safari, and Pages. It would be nice to have the speed of the SSD since I don't need a big HD.
I'm curious to find out how much RAM people are running in their Mac Pro systems. I have 5GB at the moment and it seems to do well, but I was considering adding more. I don't know if I really need to add more, but I wanted to see what everyone else was using.
My 3 week old Mac Book Pro just refuses to start up. It gets stuck on the white/grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel under, in other words, the machine won't boot up. I bought the machine new with SL installed, had just been working on it, shut it down properly through the menu, went to eat, tried to start it up and now nothing happends. Except being furious and VERY dispointed on such a new machine,
