View 10 RepliesA relative of mine has a iMac with OS Leopard or 10.5.8. He does not, however, have internet access. So, for x-mas, I was thinking of downloading (purchasing) some software for him, and ship it on a cd-rom or dvd-rom. As I use a PC (Dell laptop with Blue-Ray dvd burner), I have done some searches on this and they all seem to revolve around bootable discs, disc images and/or are 4+ years old.As I'd like this to run without to much issues, and I can't test it beforehand, what should I be keeping in mind for this process?

I was wondering if there's a way to move files instead of copy them via dragging with the mouse, or even a keyboard shortcut? I mostly run into this problem when I'm trying to move stuff to and from the Firewire External Drive I have connected to my Mac. It's kind of frustrating since I have to delete all the original ones, since I simply don't need them anymore.

Problem is I cannot seem to get the files that I wish to move or copy onto the cards
I get this error message :
The Finder cant complete the operation because some data in Inimaker.gpe cant be read or written.
(Error code -36)
The files can be moved or copied withing my Mac absolutley fine, just happens when trying to move to the mem cards.
There is nothing wrong with the files by the way....
I added a second harddrive to my Mac Pro. As it happens, it is larger than the primary harddrive. What I would like to do is use the larger harddrive as my Mac OS disk, while using boot camp to set the smaller one up with windows. when I set up the larger one with 10.6, do I have to use the install disks, or can I just copy all of the files from the old disk to the new? Are there any hidden files that I need that might get left behind?

View 1 Replies View RelatedNOTE: I am doing this with Tiger. I have read complaints about how Windows Explorer is better than OS X Finder. One popular complaint is that it is impossible to copy/move a file from one folder to another folder outside the current one without two windows as Finder doesn't have a split window setup like Explorer. This simply isn't true. Mac OS X simply handles this differently than Windows. Heres how...
1. Open a window and go to the folder that you want to copy/move files to.
2. Drag that folder to your sidebar (+T)
3. Navigate to the folder that contains what you want to copy/move.
4. Drag your file(s) to the folder you just put in your sidebar to move them or hold 'option' and drag to copy them.
5. If you don't want the folder you copied to permanently in your sidebar just drag it out.
If your needs are more robust and you want to copy/move between many folders you can drag as many folders to your sidebar as you can fit. Plus your folders will be just as you left them when you go back to them (with the exception of the view). The sidebar doesn't have to be permanent and is your friend .
I have two Macs, a desktop PM G5 and a laptop Black Macbook, both running 10.5.8. Currently when using the laptop I can see and access the PMG5 and its files through my wireless connection. I'm planning on picking up an external drive, and I'd just like this confirmed, as in its access ability. If I hook up the external drive to the G5 so I can leave it there, and access its files through the G5. will my laptop also be able to access it through the G5. In other words, when I access the G5 from the laptop over wireless, will the external drive appear as just another folder and/or device on the G5 and I'll be able to move and copy files just like I already do?
View 2 Replies View RelatedAt times I would like to gather all files of a certain extension (aif or jpg or xlsx or¦) in one location. By adding the extension parameter to the finder's FIND command, I can easily see them all, but that's only the first half. How do I now move, or copy them all into a single folder, say, on the desktop?

I've looked at some other posts that have gone over how to move files to an external drive, and they all say to use command while moving. I understand this copies the file and deletes the original, but when you make a copy and delete the original, you lose some of the original data, such as creation date, etc... This makes storage and organization more complicated than it has to be.

I was wondering how I can move the Applications folder of my boot volume to another drive? The 'other' drive is an ExpressCard SSD as I want to take advantage of its speed. I used to run SL from it but I keep having this stupid problem. So the next best thing is to run frequently used files from the SSD in hope that it works fine. Btw, unfortunately I cannot simply create a symlink to my boot volume as I cannot remove the Applications folder from it.

I think I have found a flaw in OSX 10.6.4 file copying..I normall back up my files, by dragging from a folder on my HD to an identical folder on my external HD.The folder I am copying has 86 files in it, but there are only about two dozen new files added since my last back up.I have been telling it by the dialogue box, not to replace identical files in the back up folder, and clicking the check box to apply to all."but when I press the dont copy button, in the copy progress box it says it is copying 86 files. WTF is going on...!@#$%^&*().

I have a damaged HFS+ volume on a storage appliance (Drobo). It does not mount in the Finder but it is visible with Disk Utility and Data Rescue II, and I've copied quite a bit of data off of it using Data Rescue II. However, because of a separate issue everything on the Drobo is currently read-only.
I would like to copy the damaged volume (about 1.1 TB) as-is to a fresh 2 TB hard drive so that I can then attempt to repair the volume using Disk Utility or other utilities. There is no other way for me to overcome the read-only status of the Drobo. I'm looking for the best way to do a sector-by-sector, block-by-block, or byte-by-byte copy of the damaged volume... whichever of those might be the correct term for what I'm describing.
I have been backing up my computers to an external HD with Time Machine for some time, but I just bought a 1Tb Time Capsule today. Is there a way to move/copy my existing TM backups to the new drive (in the Time Capsule), rather than starting a whole new backup, so that I can preserve my existing TM 'history'? I could just start a new backup, but it would only back up the 'current state', and I would lose all the prior data.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded carbon copy and when I click my external hd it says this CCC requires an HFS+-formatted target volume. I don't understand what it means even after reading the help page. And also say I would install something now on my new IMac and then I would migrate the file I backed up with carbon copy would those files still be there in my mac or how does that work?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI use Disk Utility (stand alone, on a USB key) to make backups of my system disk to an external disk and then transfer it from my home system to a MacBook and vice-versa when I need to travel.Â
Recently, I upgraded from 10.9.2 to 10.9.3 and, not long later, to 10.9.4. In the same period, I also had an increase (not a very big one, just a few GB, less than 15) in the occupied space of that system disk. The current amount of data on it is 164.64 GB.Â
I'm not sure if my problem comes from the sub-version upgrade, from the increase in data size, from both, or from something else. The home computer is an iMac with a 318.88 GB internal disk. The MacBook has a 500 GB internal disk. The partitions used on the external disk to make bootable backups are 400 GB big.Â
I can backup both internal disks to the external partitions (and boot on the resulting external disk when I check that it is usable). I can also copy the external backups to the MacBook system disk and boot on the result without problem.Â
But, recently, Disk Utility has started to refuse copying the content of the external backup partitions to the internal disk of the home system. It says there is insufficient space on the target volume. If the error message is correct, it means that I cannot backup 164.64 GB of data on a 318.88 GB volume!Â
For the record, the external backup partitions are OK when verified with SOS.Â

I purchased a new hard drive, my second Samsung 750 GB. My first one is partitioned, half for OSX half for Vista. Ultimately, I want to have a hard drive per operating system.
At first I thought the way to go for this, based on some stuff I read here on Mac Rumors was to use winclone to clone the windows partition, restore it to the new drive, and then I don't know what.I did the restore, there were errors in the log though..something about the wrong kind of partition. Basically it's become a pain in the ass, and I'm thinking there has to be an easier way.
It occurred to me, I might be able to use "Install and Archive" to move the boot volume to the new disk, moving the user files and network settings with it. If I did this would I be able to expand the windows partition using winclone utilizing the full hard drive? Or could moving the boot volume to the new disk mess up my Windows partition?
I just can't figure this out. I have several external drives I use to edit video. Most are 1TB drives, and I recently got a couple 3TB drives I was hoping to use to consolodate my scratch drives and reorganize my footage, etc. Ideally, I'd like to just be able to drag the entire contents of the smaller drive over to the bigger one, but I can't, because I keep getting error messages. Sometimes it's "Cannot complete, [file name] is in use" or I get an "error -50" code. Â
Before I began the copy, I formatted the destination drive in Mac OS Extended (journaled), and zeroed out the data to protect against bad sectors. I've scanned the drives since to determine if there are any verification issues (no), and I've tried turning off icon preview and the preview pane, none of it solves the problem. What the eff is going on here??Â
(I'm using all firewire800 drives. Currently several LaCie and Western Digital drives, but only trying to copy one at a time)
