OS X :: Automating Rather Complex Activity (visiting Website - Downloading Something)

May 20, 2010

i've used automator for very simple projects, like batch resizing, batch renaming and the like. however, what i'd really like to do is set up system where at a pre-appointed time every day, my computer visits a newspaper website, downloads the digital edition as a pdf (there is a clickable link to do this), then uploads said pdf onto my idisk. then all i need to do is download it on my iPad. that i can manage! am i able to do this with automator? am i able to do this at all?

Applications :: Automating Movie Conversion After Download Finishes?

Jan 20, 2010

know how to automate the conversion of an mkv file after it completes finishing?

Basically, I want to start a (totally legal) mkv torrent in the morning using Transmission, and when it finishes whilst I'm out - have it automatically start converting via VisualHub, so that it's done when I get home in the evening.

Is this possible in any way? I've had a look on Automator, but I'm not really familiar with that.

OS X :: Easier Complex Search Than Spotlight?

Jul 25, 2009

Is there a way to bring up a 'form' to do a search*, so I can type in, for example, start and/ or end dates for the files I am interested in, or types of files, or a word in a file, or a part of the folder 'tree' its beneath, etc?? I know I can do this in spotlight but then I have to know, remember or lookup all the syntax and get it correct, much too much hassle for infrequent searches.

I'm presuming someone must have come up with a simple app that front ends a potentially complex spotlight query with a form? Or is there even a native facility to do this in OSX?

* Like you can in WinXP for example, not that I'm trolling, its just that it was sooo much easier in XP and I'm hoping I'm missing something obvious :-(

Safari :: Page Too Complex To Print

Mar 27, 2012

Since updating Safari to version 5.1.3 and later (now 5.1.5) my HP 2605dn printer balks on printing some Web page with the error message, "Document too complex to print" and I have to recycle the power and empty the print queue. This wasn't a problem before as it printed any page Safari sent it. I'm wondering if others are having this same problem with Safari. There are some Web pages I have to print independent of others and some which just won't print anymore.

Applications :: Tunes Has Grown To Become Bulky And Complex?

May 12, 2010

At the cusp of reaching its 10th version, iTunes has grown to become bulky and complex with too many functions scattered around. It's lost its characteristic Apple simplicity.

Just like iMovie and Quicktime were rebooted as a blank slate in their new versions, iTunes is due for a rewrite from the ground up.

I propose taking inspiration from the best glimpse of Apple's vision of the future (iPad) and applying it to iTunes.

This is a collaborative effort so please feel free to take what I've done and refine it.

OS X :: Mail Opened When Visiting NY Times Blog

Sep 18, 2009

This happened this morning. I did not open the mail application. I was checking email via web mail in the Camino browser, clicked on a link to a NY Times blog, it went to the blog and I got a notification sound. Mail had opened. But I use Thunderbird as my default, and Camino is set up for that. I quit Mail, got out of that window, dumped the cache in Camino, quit Camino and ran ClamXav. No viruses or malware were detected.

I'm concerned about having an app open up on its own. I don't have any calendars synced to Mail. Does anyone have any ideas about why this would have happened, or what else I should do to ensure that everything is ok? I apologize if someone has addressed this, or if it is in the wrong place. I did a search and couldn't come up with anything.

OS X Yosemite :: Cannot Get Back After Visiting Snow Leopard Partition

Dec 4, 2014

I upgraded to Yosemite, but I kept my small partition of Snow Leopard. I got on the Snow Leopard partition this morning to use an old program, and that worked as normal. Now that I'm done, I am stuck in Snow Leopard. I can't find Yosemite to start in that partition. It doesn't show as a startup disk. I feel like I have lost my computer. The Yosemite disk partition shows up in disk utility, and I verified it. However, I cannot seem to figure out anything to get it to restart into that partition.

By the way, I tried restarting and pressing Command-R to get into Recovery Mode. That did not work at all. The Snow Leopard opened every time without going into Recovery.

Applications :: Firefox Homepage Changed By Visiting Proxy Server

Jan 22, 2009

I was checking out various proxy servers with Firefox, trying to find a fast, reliable server. After testing one, my homepage [URL] came up as an "Apache Tomcat" page. This keeps happening even if I type [URL], it redirects to [URL], which displays the Apache Tomcat page. It says I have successfully set it up, despite never having even heard of it before. I have used the Terminal to check for recently modified files, and have looked through Firefox's preferences. Little Snitch reports no network connections by Firefox as it loads [URL] and displays the Tomcat page. I can still do google searches from the search bar in Firefox.

Below is a transcript from part of the page. I think that there's a UNIX file on my drive that has been modified somehow, but I haven't found it. If you're seeing this page via a web browser, it means you've setup Tomcat successfully. Congratulations! As you may have guessed by now, this is the default Tomcat home page. It can be found on the local filesystem at: $CATALINA_HOME/webapps/ROOT/index.html

where "$CATALINA_HOME" is the root of the Tomcat installation directory. If you're seeing this page, and you don't think you should be, then you're either a user who has arrived at new installation of Tomcat, or you're an administrator who hasn't got his/her setup quite right. Providing the latter is the case, please refer to the Tomcat Documentation for more detailed setup and administration information than is found in the INSTALL file.

OS X Yosemite :: Safari Doesn't Remember Zoom Size When Visiting Websites

When I visit websites, I constantly have to hit the zoom in button in the Safari menu bar. If I don't do this, there are words that overlap on the page. Is there a way I could make Safari remember my zoom options? I have 18 point selected under the Advanced section of Safari System Preferences. I also use Chrome and Chrome seems to remember my view options.

Intel Mac :: Is Parallels Suitable For "graphically Complex" Games

May 24, 2012

I am planning to purchase the 2012 iMac when it's released. I currently have a 2010 iMac with 4670M which I sometimes play games on. At the moment I switch to Boot Camp for playing Windows games. I wonder if I could just use Parallels with the 2012 iMac, with its more powerful hardware, to avoid rebooting each time I want to play a game. Do you think this would work well with "graphically complex" Windows games like Rage, Stalker, DiRT Showdown, even Battlefield 3? Is there DirectX 11 support?

Note - I do use the following extensions in Safari: AdBlock and YouTube5.

OS X :: What Are The Little Activity/pop Up Window That Show Up

Jun 27, 2010

so, not sure what I did, but recently these little windows pop up that tell me what certain applications are doing. Currently they show up when I change a song in itunes a last.fm window pops up to tell me the song changed, and it also pops up in skype it pops up telling me the other person is typing and when they send there message. It's probably something really dumb that I didn't realize I did, but I can't seem to figure it out.

They are all the last.fm windows covering the screen. They usually don't show up in that mass amount, but I just skipped through itunes so a bunch of them would show up and get the point across

OS X :: CPU Meter In Activity Monitor All Wrong?

Dec 11, 2010

According to the screenshot, both Users (green) and System (red) uses 0,19% CPU each. Which means that idle (black) should be around 99%, which it clearly isn't. If I check each process individually, none is using more than 1% of CPU. The screenshot is taken after a reboot and I don't use and third-party background services like VMWare. It's Mac Pro 2.66 Quad (2009).

Mac Pro :: Fixing Never-ending Disk Activity?

Mar 9, 2009

For some strange reason, my early 2008 Mac Pro keeps making hard-drive access sounds / head-moving sounds. It's been doing it non stop for 3 days now. The sounds are short, about 3 per second, about as fast as you would read this: "grind grind grind" then a short half-second pause, then repeat. Sometimes there's a longer 1-2 second delay. But it almost always seems like triplets, "grind grind grind"

I have no apps or background processes running that I've been able to discover. I've checked startup items, launch agents, and launch daemons.

I've checked Activity monitor but I see nothing unusual, and no correlation with any cpu activity.

I've checked disk utility and SMART is verified, permissions are repaired, and the disk is verified to be "OK."

I've tried fs_usage, lsof, and top, and see no correlation to anything.

I'm clearly missing something and am hoping someone can point out what it is? What else can I do to determine what the disk activity is doing? Are there any apps or other UNIX commands to check? Or is my drive dying?

For instance there is configd, syslogd, mds, cron most of these have root inb the server column. In the User column for my name I can see mdworker, pboard, launchd and couple of others.
