View 3 Replieshow to create a bootable backup of my Macintosh HD on a LaCie 500GB USB external HDD which is 2-3 years old. I formatted the drive with a GUID partition table scheme, with the volume formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which I believe is the correct setup.
However, when I try to boot from the external HDD by holding down Option key during startup, I do not get the boot menu, instead the computer freezes at a blank grey screen and doesn't boot anything. If I remove the USB drive and do the same, the boot menu appears with Macintosh HD as the only choice (as would be expected).
I recently bought myself a Macbook Pro 13-inch model and I've been loving it so far. One thing that really bugs me is how bad the menu navigation is in OS X. I just read this on Macrumors and the only way to access menu from keyboard is by using ctrl+F2 key for which I have to press ctrl+fn+f2 key since F2 is a secondary function. Also, there is no way of going directly to the middle of the menu by keyboard shortcuts, right? If that is true, Mac OS X is still not polished enough for laptops. is there are a better way to control the menu items?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed Windows 7 on my macbook pro. Everything seemed to work well, especially after I installed boot camp for windows and its drivers.
However I can't seem to connect to the internet. My router is detected but when I select to connect to it I get no internet access.
-Import files one at a time into 3rd party application using Automator. Challenge: -The application has no way to program a key command for edit > insert > file (that I could find)Failed tries with Automator:Recorded a "watch me do" sequence using the mouse. Sometimes it works and sometimes it glitches badly; the cursor moves very slowly in places I never recorded and the script runs for several minutes until I press the restart button. I believe that nothing changes on the machine between attempts - very peculiar.Recorded a "watch me do" sequence using 'control' + 'function' + 'f2' to highlight the apple in the menu bar at the top of the screen then navigated to edit > insert > file using the arrow keys. Unfortunately it doesn't work when run. In the workflow,"'control' + 'function' + 'f2'" is shown as"'control' + '(a symbol I don't know - see attached screenshot line 1 of the workflow)'"The arrow keys pressed are then not recognized at all. (Line 2 in the workflow is from pressing return.)A seemingly simple task is really perplexing me. I'm sure there's a simple solution though.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI remember seeing keyboard shortcuts such as Cmd-F2 that would allow access of the Application Menu. However, this does not work for me.
I have set the fn key to not be needed for function key access. That is, if I press f10, it acts as f10 rather than "mute."
How do I access the Application menu from the keyboard?
Is there a menu bar app that allows quick access to the terminal.

well at my school I was given the "privilege" to be a Linux beta tester. I chose Macpup, because it is small, works on the old computers, and looks like a mac. I wanted to try it on my Mac, but I can't get to the boot menu. I've tried holding C, +OPT+SHIFT+DELETE, but whatever I do, it doesn't work. No, twice it got there, but it was just showing a tiny folder with the mac finder logo and a question mark flicking back and forth for a few minutes, then booted mac.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to Snow Leopard, once in a while my menu bar doesn't show up after booting! See screenshot below. It's not a serious problem, since clicking once or twice suddenly brings it back to the visible world. But I'm very curious why this would happen. I have been running a clean install of SL on my aluminum macbook. This never happened with Leopard.

I changed permissions for HD to no access for everyone, the Mini hang up, I had to force shutdown, ever since it is stuck on the apple and rotating bars, MacMini with OS X 10.7.2! I booted in asfe mode still stuck, repair permissions using the backup hd "10.7.2 after pressing shift key" did no fix!

I've just set up a FW800 SSD to use as an external boot drive for my 2011 iMac (mainly to speed up start-up).Â
I wanted to find out if I can direct the external boot to access the program files on the internal HD as a default. Or do I need to reload them all again on to the new partition/drive? My main concerns are that some are 1-time registration programs, plus I don't want to fill the smaller SSD too soon...Â

I have a G5 with a Tiger startup disk. I installed the HD from my retired MBP (with Leopard) into my G5 as a second hard drive. When I boot from Tiger, I can access the files on my Leopard disk, but not vice versa. I called Apple and they said it's most likely because the Leopard disk has a Laptop configuration, therefor it wouldn't look for another hard drive connected via sata. So my question is, how can I go about getting Leopard to look for another hard drive via sata? Is there an available driver?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am a complete n00b when it comes to OSX just to warn you lol. Im just wondering, if one did a dual boot of windows alongside OSX, is it possible to access those files on the windows partition from OSX and likewise, is it possible to access those files on the OSX partition from wndows? Also, will Time Capsule only back up files from OSX or from across the whole mac? Sorry if this is a stupid question, as I am looking into buying a macbook and was wondering if this is possible.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 7 to my macbook pro simply using the boot camp assistant, then again simply I deleted the windows partition. I cannot access to windows but every time I open my mac, it tries to open windows and a black screen comes, saying that I need to insert a disc or something like that.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard, and Windows 7 Premium installed via Boot Camp v3.0 (equal 64GB partitions on a 128GB SSD). Both OSs are running fast and smoothly without any major issues except for the following:
-When I am logged into Snow Leopard, I can open and access all the folders and files for all users on the Windows 7 partition (but you cannot write to them).
-When I am logged into Windows 7, I can open and access all the folders and files for all users on the Snow Leopard partition (but you cannot write to them).
My Macbook Pro (10.9.3) wouldn't boot up. I'd get the gray spinning progress indicator along with a gray progress bar which would get about 10% through and then restart.Â
I booted into recovery mode and run Disk Utility to repair the disk and got a message saying can't repair, back up your files.Â
So I took the HDD out and mounted it as an external drive on my Mac Mini (10.9.3). I got a message saying it's read only and I should back up my files. I can browse to my users directory and see all the base folders (Movies, Music, Docs, etc), but there's a red no entry icon on all the folders and accessing them through Finder shows they are empty.Â
I browsed the files through Terminal as super user and can see the files. I can also copy the files through Terminal. However, after copying a test directory some of the files are read only and others are still no access.Â
So the question is, how do I back up these files and maintain permissions?Â
My mid 2010 iMac i7 will not boot past the apple logo? I'm running 10.7.3. I have tried restoring from TM backup from recovery mode (worked the last time this happened) however upon completion it returns to the recovery screen? I made a disk of Lion when I downloaded the first time (followed same instructions sourced from numerous websites) which does not seem to work when i set to start up from this disk, just gets to the grey screen and flicks between the apple logo, a folder icon with a question mark and the circle with line through? Now I can't eject the disk either, a message appears that system can't eject and to make sure all applications are closed? Not sure how to go about closing these applications without being able to start the system? When I tried booting from the Macintosh HD I got a message that the boot cache partition was faulty? I have ran disk permissions etc all ok. Â

My 17" ALS Imac is not booting (tiger OS). I will preface this by stating the hard drive has been whining and making a lot of noise for the past year or two. Anyway, a few days ago it froze up and I had to pull the power plug. I tried to restart and got a plain gray screen and saw a question mark. Now when I try to retsart I get a plain gray screen with the following message:
Invalid memory access at: 0SRRO: (then a long address)
WELCOME TO OPEN FIRMWARE
To continue booting type "mac-boot"
To shut down type "shut down"
After I type mac-boot the hard drive (or cd drive?) starts racing quite loudly and then it freezes up and displays a grayish screen with dozens of short, yellowish, horizontal lines and I have to pull the plug again. I have been anticipating a hard driver failure for a while so at first assumed that was the problem, but now I see this memory error and am not so sure. I was planning to purchase a 1 TB drive and maybe upgrade the OS at the same time . Basically I am wondering if I should go ahead and do this or run some additional diagnostics first in case it's something else?
I can't boot my MacBook Pro. My hard drive is completely full. I was running a software update and didn't realize how big the file was. The computer shut off part of the way through the update and hasn't booted up since. How can I access the files on this drive to make some space?Â
I am running mavericks, but I don't know which version. I purchased a cable to access the internal drive through a USB on another computer. The drive shows up in disk utility, but will not let me browse the drive.
This is my first post here... even though, I've read a lot of the things on this forum, but never decided to post a question 'til now... now that i bought a macbook pro that is.
Actually I have some sort of annoyance with boot camp. It works as it's intended (with windows 7, which is a miracle, because everyone complains about that combination). But whenever I boot up and press "alt" to select the hard drive i want to boot, it always shows Windows. Can i change it for something else? and, how can I do it? Both of my partitions have names of their own... they're not generic... but still, they are not working, what can I do??
My menu bar is keep on crashing and respawning itself after 8sec then crash again in a loop. Log is showing SystemUIServer crashed and restart itself after 8 sec then crash again...

On Windows I noticed there was an icon in the bottom right (next to the clock) that I could right click and then restart in Mac OS X. Is there a similar thing for OS X that I can just click in the menu bar and restart in Windows?
