IMac :: G5 Won't Boot - Invalid Memory Access At 0SRRO (then A Long Address)

Nov 7, 2010

My 17" ALS Imac is not booting (tiger OS). I will preface this by stating the hard drive has been whining and making a lot of noise for the past year or two. Anyway, a few days ago it froze up and I had to pull the power plug. I tried to restart and got a plain gray screen and saw a question mark. Now when I try to retsart I get a plain gray screen with the following message:

Invalid memory access at: 0SRRO: (then a long address)
WELCOME TO OPEN FIRMWARE
To continue booting type "mac-boot"
To shut down type "shut down"

After I type mac-boot the hard drive (or cd drive?) starts racing quite loudly and then it freezes up and displays a grayish screen with dozens of short, yellowish, horizontal lines and I have to pull the plug again. I have been anticipating a hard driver failure for a while so at first assumed that was the problem, but now I see this memory error and am not so sure. I was planning to purchase a 1 TB drive and maybe upgrade the OS at the same time . Basically I am wondering if I should go ahead and do this or run some additional diagnostics first in case it's something else?

IMac :: 27" Wont's Boot Up / Takes A Very Long Time To Boot?

May 15, 2010

I have a 2 week old iMac 27", i7, 2tb Hard Drive, 16gb RM

In the second week the boot up times became very slow.

I would turn the machine on and get the chime within 5 seconds or so.

Then just a black/blank screen.

Eventually after about 10mins I would get a white screen then it would boot up normally.

Now the machine just doesn't get to the white screen. So I get the chime and then just darkness. It does sound like the machine is on (usual quiet imac whirring).

I've tried various key commands when I turn the machine on including pressing C with the install disk in the dvd drive and the alt, control, P, R pram reset.

I've also tried unplugging all the cables, leaving the machine for a minute and switching back on. I did manage to perform the PRAM reset once. I reset the machine and it booted fine.

But now when I switch it on just darkness.

I've called after sales and will try to get the machine replaced but in the meantime is there anything I could try that might make the machine work? I need to do a remix this weekend (deadline Monday) so really need to get it working.

MacBook Air :: How Long Will NAND Flash Memory Last

Oct 26, 2010

Was looking to buy a new laptop to replace dying old XP Dell and compliment iMac. Was thinking of a 13" Macbook Pro but have got interested and excited by this new Air. Its the instant on and portability that appeals........ but on this forums in places and elsewhere on internet (even Wikipaedia) there appears to be concerned that NAND flash memory has a definite life.... so many 1s and 0s changing before it slows right down.

Is this right... how long will it be.... can it be refreshed by copying stuff, doing something and then loading back up.... or has it to be replaced. The iFixit teardown suggests it is replaceable but at what cost. ie don't want to buy one only for the memory to give up the ghost in a year or two.

Intel Mac :: Unable To Boot - Invalid Node Structure

Apr 10, 2012

It is a 2008 intel iMac that had worked fine for the last four years until lion. Everytime there was and update or I rebooted, my Mac would freeze at some point of the login. A permission repair or just repair disk would solve the issue an everyone and a while, a restore from backup. Recently my Mac started to slow down to the point it froze for several hours and force quit would never open. I held the button and since then I have been in trouble. The repair permissions had a ton of errors but successfully repaired. But when I repaired the disk, it's hit a couple of errors but ultimately failed right after "Invalid Node Structure" that error has been consistent every time I have attempted a fix and it failed. I tried restoring from a backup to no avail. Then I wiped the drive and installed Lion (after a convienient 5 hours download) an it booted. I tried using it but it was extremely slow, let it sit over night and came back to it frozen. I had assumed it was slow due to indexing but after 12ish hours this didn't solve the issue. I clicked the apple button and it took a while to finally show up an restarted. Fro

There is wouldn't complete the boot. Froze at the apple logo or white screen with spinning mouse. Left that for several hours and stayed there. Tried repair and same issue. "ivalid node structure" redtating aftet that it just reboots and turns off a little bit after the chime. I have tried everything I could find on different forums without any success. I tried single user mode with the fsck commands and that failed also. I downloaded lion and made a recovery flash drive from another computer. I have since installed several new installations of lion after an erase and repartition. I took it to the apple store and they installed a fresh install of lion and it worked for a day then slowed down and froze. I would like to try everything possible before claiming the hardrive dead. I forgot to mention I have done PRAM resets in between the events I described as well as the SCM i think reset by unplugging. I have left it unplugged for over 12 hours, also have taken out all peripherals minus keyboard and mouse.

Hardware :: Cannot Copy To Memory Stick - File Name Too Long

Jul 3, 2009

I just bought an 8 gig memory stick - that was advertised as being PC & Mac compatible. I put it in and it loaded fine. But when I tried to copy a file to it - it told me that the file name was too long. The name wasn't that long so I renamed it '1.jpg' - but got the same response. I tried other files and go the same. So I launched 'Disk Utility' and reformatted it using the 'Mac OS Extended (journaled) option. This worked fine. But this time when I tries to copy any files, it told me that the operation could not be completed because I did not have sufficient privileges to do this.

MacBook :: Invalid Node Structure And Invalid Sibling Links On Hard Drive?

Jun 22, 2012

I'm having some trouble with my Macbook. It's running on Leopard 10.5.8. I recently tried to partition my hard drive and while doing so it prompted me informing me that there was an 'invalid node structure'. I could then no longer proceed with the partition. I had planned on updating my OS to Snow Leopard. I wanted to partition my internal HD, so I backed up some files on my external HD. I basically wanted my interal HD to run smoothly with a new OS while minimizing the space used. Now I've come across this issue where there is another message being prompted that says, 'invalid sibling links on hard drive'. I found THESE steps on another forum that informed me that this might restore the hard drive back to a readable/functional state but that didn't work either:

(These were the steps I took and nothing happened except another prompt informing me of an 'invalid node structure')

Boot off the OS X CD (reboot, hold C while booting). The installer will load up, go to Utilities in the menu and run Terminal.Type df and look for the drive that has your Mac system mounted---you'll have to unmount this. On my MacBook Pro, it was /dev/disk0s2.Type umount /dev/disk0s2, replacing disk0s2 with whatever disk your OS lives on.Type fsck_hfs -r /dev/disk0s2. If you umounted the wrong thing, it will complain that you can't repair a mounted drive. Go back and umount the right thing and repeat this step.

I then stumbled upon a few different forums mentioning something about Disk Warrior. I was wondering if THAT would resolved this issue. Honestly, I don't really want to spend much money on buying this but I WILL buy a new hard drive if I ABSOLUTELY need to. I was just trying to see if I can troubleshoot this before I decide to throw in the towel and buy a new hard drive or attempt to try out this Disk Warrior thing.

Applications :: IPhoto Memory Leak Causing Long Slideshows To Crash

Nov 17, 2010

My dad has a new 27" Core i5 iMac. When he plays a very long slideshow, iPhoto consistently crashes around the 8-minute mark. Sometimes he gets an error message saying "iPhoto unexpectedly quit" and sometimes the slides just quit coming up, even though the music keeps playing.

It doesn't matter from which event the slides come, although it seems to happen on his pics only and not on the pre-installed pics from Apple.

One last data point, this never happens, even when viewing the same slideshow, on his 13" MacBook Pro, which he bought at the same time.

It seems to me like a memory leak, or, less likely, some kind of GPU overheating issue. He's tried rebuilding his photo library, which changed nothing.

IMac :: Not Connecting To Router / Giving Me "invalid Password?

Oct 25, 2010

I have gone over many different methods of fixing my moms macbook not connecting to the internet. I know it's blasphemy, but I'm not a mac person to begin with and this is not making me think any higher of them.I know there are other posts about the issue, but people just keep getting off track with the first posters question. She has Mac OS X version 10.6.3At first it was giving me "invalid password", but that was not the issue, because my dads "HP" laptop was connecting just fineeeeeeee without any errors to drive the consumer insane! Now, it's just giving me "connection timed out".The first thing I did was to do a hard restart of my belkin 802.11g router to reset settings do default. Updated firmware to latest version.

For some reason, the airport utility was unable to find any airport wireless devices. I also connected the ethernet straight into the mac and it was still giving me the error.I tried making another location. I tried moving airport to the top of the network preferences and made ethernet "inactive". I have tried running network Diagnostics in safari and that was a waste of time..(sorry I'm so negative, but this has really gotten to me) This just kept giving me an error saying it can't fix the issue because it has no idea as well.I'm at the end of my rope and would love to have my opinion of macs back on the "maybe" side of things.

IMac :: Hard Drive Error - Invalid Sibling Link

Jul 2, 2009

It won't start at all or it starts and works really slowly at first. Like the processor would work million times slower, almost like just hangs jammed. Sometimes after hours of trying to get it started, it will start and work normally again for a long time. But when I shut it off or put it to sleep, again it's nearly impossible to get it started again.

The Disk Utility said, that there's an hard drive error "invalid sibling link". I booted from the OS X installation CD and did the repair, but it said it couldn't repair it. Then I did this fix: [URL]. But again it said the same error. Then I booted normally and checked the Verify Disk again and to my suprise it is now saying the hard drive is OK. But it still has the same problem! It just is having really difficult time waking up.
