OS X :: Word Processing App On New IMac

Mar 9, 2010

My daughter just bought a new iMac with the Snow Leopard OS. She is now frustrated because she cannot find any word processing app on the factory software bundle. Is there anything there for word processing/publishing? If so, what is it called? If now, what would be recommended? I know that that will be a personal preference issue, but am interested in what others are using. I also bought an iMac but I also have a PC in my home office so I have no time crunch on getting it all figured out. My daughter on the other hand has college classes and her PC crapped out on her, so iMac is what she has.

PowerPC :: Free Word Processing Programs For G4

Jul 26, 2008

My parents have a really old eMac G4 that I am going to have to fix tomorrow. They don't have a word processing program so that is the main question I have. Are there any decent free word processing programs out there? The machine runs 10.3 and here are its specs:

Order no.M8577LL/A
Processor700MHz PowerPC G4
Memory384MB
Hard drive 40GB Ultra ATA
Optical driveCD-RW
Graphics supportNVIDIA GeForce2 MX with 32MB of DDR SDRAM
FireWireTwo ports
USBFive ports
VGA video mirroringYes
Modem56K
Ethernet10/100BASE-T

It used to have AppleWorks on it, but since I've reinstalled 10.3, it's no longer there. (I did a clean install.) Is there an option for it? NeoOffice has a 512mb Ram requirement that isn't going to be met by this machine. Also, the internet runs rather slow on it. They have a 1.5 megabit connection. Would it be better to run it under 10.2?

Applications :: Opening Moved Word Processing Files?

Feb 11, 2009

I have several hundred word processing files I prepared in MS WORD. I moved the folders containing this files from my old computer to my new iMac. Every time I try to open one of these files, I see a box on the screen saying the file cannot be opened.

This is true when I try to use MS WORD for mac, when I try Pages, and when I try other word processors.

I suspect some sort of permissions need to be set for the folders or the files. I hope it can be done in "bulk"

Hardware :: External Keyboard - Access Function Keys For Word Processing Commands

Oct 13, 2009

I want to be able to access the function keys for word processing commands. I want to use one key command, not two. I am presently using a Macally keyboard that is several years old. (I like the feel for typing.) System preferences allow for one key commands, but do not work with this keyboard. Would a newer keyboard work? E.g., the Matias OS X Keyboard? or the Macally iKeyS?

IMac :: The Official Word On Upgrading Hd On Imac 27? Will It Void The Warranty

Jan 17, 2010

Have a quick question. I'm considering buying an Imac from a reputable Apple imac reseller on Ebay that manually upgrade the hd's to either 2tb or an ssd drive on the imac 27. Will apple not honor the warranty and void it if they see the hd were not upgraded by them should the warranty ever have to be used?

Also, if the imac ever needs to be replaced by apple, do I .lose the hd for a stock imac model with only ,1tb hd? Hope that makes sense.

OS X :: Uses At Least 50% Of Processing Power - Is It Normal

Apr 18, 2009

I've got a Mac mini (2, 1) 2 GHz, 2 GB of RAM. I installed this prefpane:

/Developer/Extras/PreferencePanes/ to get a look at what is going on, like in Activity Monitor in Windows.

I opened up the Processor Palette and did some basic tasks like going over the Dock, opening Dashboard, etc and found that, at time, those basic tasks used 50% of my processing power! Also the Time Machine GUI used 90%

How can I reclaim some of this power?

MacBook Pro :: How Much Processing Power Necessary For System

Mar 23, 2010

I am considering getting a used MB Pro for editing home movies. OK, its not Final Cut Pro stuff, but this will be the most demanding thing I use the computer for. In the past I have used iMovieHD and iDVD to make movies on my 12" PB G4 with a 1.25 GHz processor and 1.5 GB of RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64 MB or 128 MB (not sure which). This has worked fine, but I can tell its a little slow. I certainly can't plan on doing anything else at the same time.

But, now the previous generation MB Pros are going for $1000 (used or refurb) on eBay and I am considering getting something like a 2.4 GHz / 2 - 4 GB with a 256 or 512 MB Nvidia 8600 graphics card.

MacBook Pro :: How Do I Get My System To Do Overnight Processing

Jun 27, 2010

When I begin the job, the CPU monitor indicates they are working hard, the fans come on and the machine gets hot...all indications it's doing the job. However - if I set it up to do the job overnight, when I come down in the morning the computer is asleep and stone cold, which suggests to me it has ceased processing the file.
f I wake it up - it resumes processing, getting hot again and so on.So how can I ensure it continues the job overnight? I've tried setting ' Never go to sleep ' in system settings ( screen still set to go to sleep ). That doesn't seem to work. When I set it to ' Never go to sleep ' in system settings, do I need to restart to make the settings active ( if I restart I lose all the work on the CAD file done so far! ).

Software :: Leopard Multi-processing Possible?

Dec 11, 2008

In Snow leopard, they say that its suppose to handle multiple processors much more efficiently. The articles usually concentrate on 4 or 8 cores though. My question is would it be much of an improvement for someone who has a new MacBook Pro which only has two processors?

Addition: I also understand that we don't know too much about snow leopard yet but how effenciant is Leopard with dual processors?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Processing Large Files On Mac?

Jun 5, 2012

I need to process large files (few GB) from a measurement. The data files contain lists of measured events.I process them event by event and the result is relatively small and does not occupy much memory. The problem I am facing is that Lion "thinks" that I want to use the large data files later again and puts them into cache (inactive memory). The inactive memory is growing during the reading of the datafiles up to a point where the whole memory is full (8GB on MacBook Pro mid 2010) and it starts swapping a lot. That of course slows down the computer considerably including the process that reads the data.

If I run "purge" command in Terminal, the inactive memory is cleared and it starts to be more responsive again. The question is: is there any way how to prevent Lion to start pushing running programs from memory into the swap on cost of useless harddrive cache?

Running 4.1.3 with FCPX and Send to Compressor has all of the distributed processing groups greyed out in the selection drop down. I can only run compressor on This Computer.

If I export the file from FCPX and then drop that into Compressor from the finder it works fine. Is there a reason it is not working when directly connected?

I have deleted and reinstalled  both apps but get the same results.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Batch Processing OCR Of PDF Documents

Apr 26, 2012

I'm envisioning a scenario where users can drop multi-page, image based PDF files into a shared folder. That folder is "watched" on a OS X Lion server and new files are OCR processed and then moved to another location. My googling so far hasn't showed much promise. Most solutions I'm finding are for windows. Has anyone solved this problem yet? Currently my users are doing the processing in Adobe Acrobat X Pro by hand. It's crushing their laptops and proving to be quite inefficient.

MacBook Pro :: Kernel Panic Crashes Often When A Lot Of Processing Is Going On

Jun 1, 2014

My MacBook Pro has crashed many times over the past month. It seems to happen when a lot of processing is going on. It happens when I have nothing external connected. It happens when different software is running. The easiest way for me to make it happen is to have multiple apps running, especially with some videos. It doesn't seem to matter which software is runing.

In 2012, I installed some 3rd-party RAM (Corsair 2x4GB). Everything has pretty much worked fine until now.

I have already reset the SMC.

Instead of installing OSX on an external drive, booting from that, and trying to make it crash, I'm thinking it might be easier to:Remove a stick of RAM and try to make it crash. If it does, switch it with the other stick and try to make it crash.

If it still crashes, then I guess I would make an image of my system drive, reinstall OSX and copy the image over (I'm not 100% how to do that exactly - I know how to get all my documents back, but I'm afraid I'd break a connection necessary for some programs [like Pro Tools] to work.)

PowerPC :: IMac G4 Rejuvenation - Run Ichat And Word At The Same Time

I looked through all the different threads trying to find out different mods and stuff, but I couldn't find anything too easy. Are there any simple ways that I can get this mac performing? The Daystar upgrade costs way too much for me, and I might as well get a new iMac. If anyone knows what to do with a g4.
