OS X :: Won't Create Symbolic Link / Can't Find Settings
Dec 2, 2009
How do i "Create a Symbolic Link"? I downloaded off apple's website an Automater script by Junecloud, but I can't get it to work!
Can anyone give me easy step by step instructions? I followed that on the Instructions file from Junecloud, I right-click on a folder and go to "Create symbolic Link" but nothing happens.
I want to create a symbolic link of my MobileSync Backup folder on my boot drive. That folder contains my iphone and ipad bckups and its getting large. I want to move it off my SSD.
I'm using SymbolicLinker plugin to do so. I can easily make the symbolic link but I dont understand the proper way to move it. Do I move the symbolic link to the drive I want it to be stored on or do I move the symbolic link to the SSD where I dont want the data stored?
If I want to put a link/shortcut in my downloads folder that points to a folder in my Dropbox folder, so I can easily drag & drop files into it, which would I better using?
so I am using Dropbox to keep a backup of my Documents and Pictures folder. I read several tutorials about creating symlinks and I downloaded SymbolicLinker 2.0v2.
The one problem I have is that Finder keeps telling me it's an Alias. How do I know that it's a real symlink and not just an alias?
I've just recently received my new iMac 27" i7 and have the SSD + HDD option, where the SSD contains OS + Applications and the HDD contains data. I read that moving the whole Home folder was not a good idea, therefore, I wanted to just move my Documents, Pictures and Download folder to the second internal HDD. I read an article/tutorial how to do this and this is what I followed (using Terminals):
Code: cp -Rp ~/Documents /Volumes/Macintosh Data HD chmod -R -N ~/Documents rm -rf ~/Documents ln -s /Volumes/Macintosh Data HD/Documents ~/Documents However, when I try and type the symbolic link I get the error:
Code: "ln: Documents: No such file or directory" Because of this, the Documents folder on the Dock appears with a big question mark as it cannot locate the new Documents folder.
Any ideas how I can get the link working or if not try and restore the original documents folder and just move the entire Home folder over to the Hard Disk data drive?
(note: I don't have any documents in the folders as of yet so I haven't lost any important info!)
I'm running Windows7 in a bootcamp partition, along with OSX 10.6.2. I use Dropbox to sync my files between computers, and currently have all of my Dropbox files in OSX. My drive is currently partitioned approximately 75% OSX, 25% W7. I'm trying to save space on my BC partition, and hence, following this guide: (URL)
I'd like to be able to create junctions of the files on my OSX partition and drop them into W7. This way, I don't have 2 copies of each file (one in W7, one in OSX). However, using Link Shell Extension, I'm not able to create symbolic links/junctions etc to the OSX partition. I also tried setting my Dropbox folder in W7 to be the same as the one on the OSX partition, but Dropbox won't allow it. Basically I want to know how I can mirror the contents of a directory located in OSX in W7, without having to simply duplicate all the content.
I found a utility that allows me to copy a file's location to the clipboard, but is there a way to create a link to a file location? I'd like to be able to send co-workers a link to files or folders on shared servers, so they can just click the link and get to that location in their Finder. I seem to remember doing this with Windows. Can it be done in OS X?
I have a macbook and am trying to set up a small wired/wireless network at home. I am trying to wire my macbook through a gigabit switch with the router and a Nas D-Link 323 also attached to the switch. There will also be a PC which will be wireless and does not need access to the D-Link. I can connect to the internet ok and have the pc working wirelessly too however I am at a loss as to how to get the mac talking to the Nas. The lights are all on on the switch but I cant figure out what I need to do to get the D-Link to talk to the mac. I am using cat 5 cables. If I log into the router the D-link shows up as an attached device with an IP address and a mac address. I have a feeling that I should be doing something in the network settings but I don't know what.
I have a huge file I need to send a bunch of people, but its 150MB, so I was wondering about uploading the file to the FTP and giving a direct link for people to download? My webpage is up already so I know how to use iweb and and cyberduck, but I've yet to figure out to just upload it and send a direct link via FTP url?
I bought the program Aperture 2. I have the serial number and the support ID, but I can't find the link to download or install. I have a macbook air 11 OS X version 10.9Â
I'm running Safari 5.1.4, and Mail 5.2 on a system running OS 10.7.3. I am trying to send a link to a page from safari using CMD+SHIFT+I. When I attempt to do that, I receive a message that Safari cannot find an email application. I checked Mail's preferences, and it is listed as the default mail application. How to get Safari to find Mail?
When I try to click on a link in my email on my Mac it cannot find the Firefox application and just gives me an error message. I know there is somewhere to specify what browser to open but I can't find it.Â
I see the box for DNS server info, but it's blank.
I want to know which DNS server(s) my computer is hooking up to to determine whether it's infected with a certain malware. (See [url]...) It sounds outlandish, I'm only concerned because my roommate's computer is infected and we share a wireless network, which can also apparently be compromised.
I'm looking to set some virtual hosts up in Terminal. I'm accessing the set up fine (sudo nano /private/etc/hosts)
But I can't figure out what I need to do in order to enter IP addresses and URL's. None of the HotKeys listed at the bottom of the screen seem to give me what I want.
I have been asked to send some photos to company, and to watermark them as property of that company. I have never done it before, and indeed am not sure what it exactly means. I think it mean it will have invisible data in the files metadata stating " Property of..." etc.
How can I do this.....clear and simple please as I'm no expert.
does anybody know of software that will download a web site if given the path? For instance, I want to download the tutorials of an open source project. But it is online only. If I can download it to my laptop, I can read it while I telecommute on the train.
I had a problem with my iMac in that the second monitor kept flickering black every few seconds. After much pulling out of hair, I managed to sort it by using SwitchResX, creating a new resolution with a slightly different refresh rate.
Well, I've now reinstalled Leopard, and I'm not sure what files SwitchResX modified. I have a mountable backup image of the old installation and I just need to know what files to copy across.
I've copied over Users/Me/Library/Preferences/ByHost/(URL).6881753F-E268-5D65-B162-DE4A346FC4E3.plist and I *think* one other one (I cant remember which .plist file it was).
Rebooted and I still have the problem, so I assume I've missed the correct file....
I dont know what settings I used either so can't redo it.
I was wondering exactly how the drag and drop function works. If I drag a file from the desktop to documents, I am assuming it is moved, not copied? If I drag a file from the desktop onto a flash drive, I am assuming it is copied?
Which leads me to: dragging a song from iTunes onto a folder in the desktop and then dragging that folder onto a flash drive. I am assuming the iTunes song will be in the new folder and on the flash drive? I thought there was something weird about having to have the iTunes songs in the iTunes folder?
And finally, if I decided to make an alias folder with songs (let's say it was an artist folder within all the iTunes folders and I made an alias on the desktop), and I dragged that alias folder onto a flash drive, would the flash drive's folder have the real files of the songs?
Safari seems to have changed and I don't know how to get back to default preferences. Suddenly, it is wiping (visual) open, rather than opening the way every other application does with the last site visited, even though preferences are set to open with homepage. The top apple bar with the apple on the left and my name on the right hides when safari is open
My bluetooth is suddenly "unavailable" on my MBP. I cannot find any settings for it in system preferences and it just basically died. When I look it up on "about my Mac" is says it's "not found." Can no longer use my mouse, or connect my Bose wireless speaker (which I just purchased!).
Info: MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008), Mac OS X (10.6.8)
I have a large dataset in Excel that I have to do a multiple find/replace in (changing USPS state abbreviations to their full names). In searching the Microsoft boards--I was directed to use Applescript, and even the documented help with Excel was recommeding this. Unfortunately, there wasn't much help potinting me in the specific direction I needed.
the only solution i've found that works is i have to re download itunes everytime to make the restore or upgrading my iphone work, i've tryed the recovery mode and the dfu mode itunes just sits there after the final loading process, so my question is is there a way i can get it working back to normal without having to re downloading itunes.
I recently bought an iMac and I have noticed within the past week that I have had to force the mail program to shut down. Otherwise if I don't force the mail program to shut down the OS will not let me put the iMac to sleep or to shut down.
