I'm looking to set some virtual hosts up in Terminal. I'm accessing the set up fine (sudo nano /private/etc/hosts)
But I can't figure out what I need to do in order to enter IP addresses and URL's. None of the HotKeys listed at the bottom of the screen seem to give me what I want.
So is there any way to unlock Terminal? Admin locked it (message comes up saying it's locked) and I don't have privileges.

I have never done it before, and indeed am not sure what it exactly means. I think it mean it will have invisible data in the files metadata stating " Property of..." etc.
How can I do this.....clear and simple please as I'm no expert.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have recently given up on anything PC and moved to Mac. Mostly I am very happy with my decision but a couple of things niggle me and I don't seem to be able to change them.
In imail when delete an email from any of my mail accounts or the inbox, imail automatically selects the next newest email. I would like it to select the next oldest email. Is there anyway of changing this?
I know this is quite petty! but I'm just used to it working that way in outlook and keep deleting email I want to keep.
Does anyone know the terminal command for toggling on/off the System Prefs for Keyboard & Mouse? I'd use it for an Automator workflow or Quickeys shortcut. The specific setting is "Use all F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys." I and many other Cinema 4D users find ourselves needing to turn this on and off all day long, because the app uses that F8 key that the new Aluminum keyboards have coopted, but using it means losing our speaker volume / mute settings. This is in Tiger btw.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn Terminal, if I go to Preferences->Settings->Advanced, there's a pane that has literally hundreds of instances of setting configurations, numbered sequentially. Apparently, every time I start up Terminal by selecting a [something].terminal file, another one of these setting instances gets created.
Is there any way to prevent these from being created every time I start another Terminal session in this way?
Lion OSX want to reset Terminal to Factory Settings but I can't find the terminal.plist file in Library.Â

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy macbook 2006 recently would not boot properly. By that i mean it takes about a good 5 minutes to boot to a messed up looking desktop.
Before i restore the system i need to get some files off of the machine. (The gui side freezes when i try to drag and drop).
I can boot into single use mode and use terminal but i do not know how to do the command mv /documents...etc but i don't know what drive my usb stick is or that it is mounted.
Currently running OSX 10.5 and how to find your gateway address in Terminal? IFCONFIG only appears to show the IP address. I know you can find it via System Preferences > Network but would like to know if it is possible to find it via terminal.

Why are Apple applications are so much larger than similar Microsoft applications. Some examples: Word -12.7 MB and Pages - 273.4 MB: Excel - 11.7 MB and Numbers - 138.6 MB. Both Word and Excel are sophisticated programs and I would have assumed they would be large, and that since Pages and Numbers are relatively new so they would be lean, but the opposite seems to be the case. They all work well except Numbers is slow. Is that a function of size? Is obesity epidemic in programming as well as programmers?

Somehow, I got the functionality back by my address (whatever it's called..dunno the lingo), has changed.

It says new-host-2: now, instead of just saying my name (which is what it did before).
my 11 year old son just told me yesterday that he forgot his password on his imac. i don't know why he would have one, but he for got and now i need a way to get it back with out restoring the mac. i heard there is a prompt in terminal to get the password and possibly change it. does anyone know what this procedure would be?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI inherited a G5 from a colleague who left the department however I was not given a firmware password. So now I cannot re-install the OS OR work in terminal. I have tried the remove RAM and then reset PRAM. I have tried booting off disk but that is locked. I have tried replacing HD with new one but cannot boot off disk to install onto it. What is left for me to try to get this working and now the person is not available to just tell me what password is, they left months ago.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a problem with my iMac in that the second monitor kept flickering black every few seconds. After much pulling out of hair, I managed to sort it by using SwitchResX, creating a new resolution with a slightly different refresh rate.
Well, I've now reinstalled Leopard, and I'm not sure what files SwitchResX modified. I have a mountable backup image of the old installation and I just need to know what files to copy across.
I've copied over Users/Me/Library/Preferences/ByHost/(URL).6881753F-E268-5D65-B162-DE4A346FC4E3.plist
and
I *think* one other one (I cant remember which .plist file it was).
Rebooted and I still have the problem, so I assume I've missed the correct file....
I dont know what settings I used either so can't redo it.
I was wondering exactly how the drag and drop function works. If I drag a file from the desktop to documents, I am assuming it is moved, not copied? If I drag a file from the desktop onto a flash drive, I am assuming it is copied?
Which leads me to: dragging a song from iTunes onto a folder in the desktop and then dragging that folder onto a flash drive. I am assuming the iTunes song will be in the new folder and on the flash drive? I thought there was something weird about having to have the iTunes songs in the iTunes folder?
And finally, if I decided to make an alias folder with songs (let's say it was an artist folder within all the iTunes folders and I made an alias on the desktop), and I dragged that alias folder onto a flash drive, would the flash drive's folder have the real files of the songs?
How do i "Create a Symbolic Link"? I downloaded off apple's website an Automater script by Junecloud, but I can't get it to work!
Can anyone give me easy step by step instructions? I followed that on the Instructions file from Junecloud, I right-click on a folder and go to "Create symbolic Link" but nothing happens.
Safari seems to have changed and I don't know how to get back to default preferences. Suddenly, it is wiping (visual) open, rather than opening the way every other application does with the last site visited, even though preferences are set to open with homepage. The top apple bar with the apple on the left and my name on the right hides when safari is open
