OS X :: Why Macs So Slow To Move Files?

Mar 10, 2009

So the mac came last night. everything is fine. Moved my files from my old windows backup drive to the desktop of my mac. About 250 gigs. But now moving files from my backup folder, on the desktop to say, music or pictures, is just as slow within the machine as if I were moving them through a USB connection. Is that normal for OSX? is there a faster way? Windows moves files within its OS, lightning fast.

MacBook Pro :: Slow Download Speeds On Macs V's Windows?

Apr 29, 2012

i have newish MBP and iMac.  I also run several windows 7 based pc's.  Over the last couple of weeks the download speed on both mac's has declined badly.  Trying to download drivers for an HP printer yesterday and was downloading at around 25kbps on both macs, ended up downloading on windows pc at around 800kbps instead, same with any other downloads, was getting over 1.2mbps on windows last night whilst my macs struggle toexceed 30kbps making them almost unusale.  I am a relative newcomer to apple, love build quality and feel but am nor too happy with this situation, have tried using different internet connections too - tethering to my cell, same result - 2 different machines so it seems to me the issue sits somewhere within Lion.

OS X :: Syncing Files Between Two Macs?

Aug 4, 2008

I haven't found anything via the forum search on this topic, but can remember, that this topic was brought up in recent months.

I have two Macs, one for the road and one for home.

As I have a digital camera, I store the images (jpg and raw) on an external hard drive.

I want to be able to have another copy of those files on my MacBook, for editing on the road, and when I come home, to copy the modified and new images and files back to the external drive.

I also edit some pictures on my iMac, so the process has to be vice versa:

Do any of you know of a software that syncs only the modified files back and forth, and doesn't treat one file (or set of files) as the master and the other as copy like FileSync?

The guy at the apple store said a combination of Ethernet cable and a program called 'SuperDuper' will sort this out? Can anyone attest to this, or does anyone have a better method?

OS X :: Migrating Files Between Macs With Existing Users?

Oct 15, 2010

I've just received my new Mac and I'm wanting to transfer my documents etc. from my old Mac to my new one. I'd rather do it manually than use the migration assistant as I have more control that way.

I've got my two Macs set up side by side and have shared the home directory of my user on the other Mac. Thing is, I've run into a permissions problem. Obviously my old Mac only lets my old user access the files.

Is there any way to migrate the files between users on two Macs manually without resorting to something like "chmod -R 777 ~" to mass change permissions? Ideally, I'd like to just drag the files across and have them automatically change permissions when they're transferred to my new Mac.

OS X :: Sharing Files Between Two Macs - Unable To Connect

Jul 21, 2009

I have a new iMac MacBook air and aebs with a USB drive, both computers are set up as the same user and passed and with full file sharing running. From the iMac I can see the laptop under the shared heading but clicking on it just sits for a while and then says unable to connect, the same thing happens when I click connect as. This happens from the laptop also and also exactly the same when trying to connect to the drive on the aebs.

They only way it works is to go the finder and going through connect to server and this is fine, any ideas what to do? Also my understanding is that the drive on the aebs should automatically connect but this doesn't? Which means every time I restart the laptop I have to manually reconnect to the drive which is annoying as I use it for time machine. I would also like to easily connect both macs together so I can keep files synced easier.

Applications :: Sending Large Files Between Two Macs Over The Net?

Apr 27, 2010

Me and my sister are looking for a way to swap files, between our Macs, over the Net.

I have no idea about FTP or Transmit and I'm not sure what our best method or app should be?

We're both running OS X- I'm on Snow Leopard, she's on Leopard*

My sister has two boys and a little girl. Shortly after buying our respective Macs, I bought an HD camcorder and my sister bought a very good DSLR. So I have lots of HD videos made with iMovie for her and she has tons of pics to send me. We both have our own back-ups of course but neither is proof against fire or theft to be honest. I know we could swap them on a large USB stick or a portable drive but we don't always see each other and she's very busy.

Hardware :: Transferring Files Between Macs On Wireless Network?

Feb 25, 2008

I need a little help with transferring files between my MacBook and my iMac on my wireless network. I'm using an AEBS (the newest one, just got it last week) and both computers connect to it through their AirPort cards. After fooling with my router for about 30 minutes after I got it I was finally able to connect to the internet, and after about 6 more hours I was able to wirelessly print so yea, I am pretty much a noob when it comes to wireless networking.

So my question now is, what is the easiest way to transfer files between my two Macs on my wireless network? I've tried copying files into my "Public" folder on one Mac and then accessing it on the other and that works fine sometimes but it's too time consuming and file permissions are killing me! Do I have to set the permissions on each individual file or folder so that all users can read and write to them when I transfer them? And better yet, can one Mac ONLY access the files in the "Public" folder of another?

OS X :: Permissions For Editing Files From File Sharing Between Two Macs

Feb 10, 2010

I currently have a Mac Mini operating as a Home Theatre with my TV, i transfer media files between my MacBook and the Mini via the Wi-Fi network.

The files transfer fine, no problems. However when it comes to modifying or editing the files i have a labourious task of going into the info pane of the file & adding the Mac Mini as a user and then giving it the read/write permissions.

Is there any way that files transferred from my MacBook via this method already give the read/write permissions automatically to my Mac Mini? Instead of going into every file and adding the permissions manually?

Probably is a simple answer to this, but its the first time i've used file sharing between two macs.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Files Sometimes Missing From Folders After Copying Between Macs?

Feb 15, 2012

We have a 2009 intel iMac here, running Leopard (10.5.8). We receive files from customers via browser-based FTP or email on this mac, and the boss puts these files in appropriately-named folders, and copies those folders into the appropriate place on our file server – a G5 (1.8Gz single processor 2.5Gb RAM) also running Leopard 10.5.8. All macs here are connected via ethernet using TCP/IP (of course)

However, every now and then, there are files missing from these folders. For example one folder (that had 100 images or so) had 4 files missing after copying to the file server, even though the folder was dragged across wholesale, not the contents. All filename conventions are standardised before being sent to us, and do not use any illegal characters that may cause a problem between differing OSs or processor platforms.

This issue may not be limited to these two macs, but there may not enough network traffic between other macs to show this issue on other machines – it only seems to occur when copying across large batches of files, and does not happen all the time. There is no one thing that sticks out that links the missing files – i.e. filenames/filetype, etc. It seems completely random.

I thought that TCP/IP was supposed to check data packets to ensure that all data was sent properly, but no errors are received on either side.

Is there some sort of maintenance (other than repairing permissions, which is done on a weekly basis on the fileserver) that I can run

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Fastest Way To Transfer Files Between Remote Macs?

My brother and I share folders and various file types through ichat at the moment, but it's so slow, we are both on pretty fast networks (35/35MB and 50/8MB) I can mount a folder of his on my mac (we are in seperate towns) by putting our apple ID's into the apple extreme section (I think back to my mac) and we can share files that way, but I am confused as to why the transfer rates are so slow, we get at best 32KBs. Any recommendations for a faster file transfer method between remote macs.

OS X :: Unable To Share Files On Two Macs / Some Items Are Locked And Can't Be Modified

Aug 26, 2010

I just setup my new iMac (coming from a PowerMac G5). There is another PowerMac G5 on the same network that is still in use.

With my old setup, I was able to access the other PowerMac computer including all files...I found see, copy, change everything on the other computer. I don't recall how I initially did it but it worked great.

I can't seem to duplicate it on the new iMac. On the PowerMac still in use, it says that Admins are supposed to have total access but my access seems very limited. It will only work for folders that I specifically add in File Share and even then it says some items are locked and can't be modified when I open them on my iMac.

It seems as if I am not gaining access as an Admin but as a regular user. What am I doing wrong here?

MacBook Pro :: Very Slow In Starting-up - Impossible To Move Any Icons Around Screen - Click - Drag

We've had a Macbook now for about 18 months - no problems. However, last night it was very slow in starting-up and then we found it impossible to move any icons around the screen (click+drag). We have just five small folders on the desktop.

Although 'hiding' is 'on', the dock has also disappeared completely and settings for the dock cannot be changed under preferences.

The Macbook won't turn off under 'shut-down', we have to shut-down by holding pressing 'on' button.

OS X :: Move Large Files On The Web?

Aug 18, 2008

I do a lot of work that involves advertising, photography, video editing, DVD authoring, photoshop and illustrator files. The illustrator vector files are fairly compressed but the photoshop raster files can be extremely large. Sometimes, I have someone wishing to send me a large portfolio folder, or I find I may want to send a big file to someone else. As an example, I recently had an artist send me a hi-res portfolio of his book covers to be made into a promotional DVD for comic-con. One of the CD's he sent me had the wrong pics on it, so I had to wait for the correct pics to be sent, which delayed the project several days. I can compress a single file for emailing, but can not drop the resolution as a way to minimize folder size if the file is going to be printed. I work predominantly on a mac, but many of my customers use windows based operating systems.

What is the best method for sending and receiving large digital files from a variety of customers? If I get an FTP site, can I keep one client from accessing someone else's folders? I noticed that Skype allows for file transfer... is VOIP practical for sending large files? This month's macworld made mention of a bit torrent program for such a chore. What about using a bit torrent program such as Transmission for creating a bit torrent folder for moving large files to a single customer? Are paid services available? Is a paid service the best choice? I am looking for a method that I can both send and receive these large files. It should be easy enough for a less than tech savvy customer to send me files after I give them a minimal explanation of how to do it. Preferably, it would involve no cost to a customer, and no need for them to install software.

OS X :: How To Move Files Rather Than Copy Them

OS X :: How To Move Folder Which Contains Files

Jun 28, 2009

However, I am apparently too dumb to figure out how I can move (cut and paste at the same time) a folder from on location on my hard drive to another without going back to the original area and delete the folder after the "fake" moving process. It seems that MAC does not support the physical movement of a folderfrom location A to B.

Scenario:
I have a folder called A
I select the folder (click with mouse)
I drag the folder to the desired destination B
I release the mouse and what happens: MAC starts to copy the folder and its files.

I read on several forums and pages that it is possible if you hold down the command key (after you click the folder you want to move) but it does not work for me. Does anyone has a simple, short answer whether it is possible to move a folder which contains files from location A to B on my mac (same hard drive)? This cannot be true that this does not work in the FINDER. Even if I select the folder go in the Finder menu to "Edit" (cut is grayed out and not clickable) it does not give me the option to perform a cut and paste. So, does cut and paste work for folders on a MAC or not.
