OS X :: 2 Macs Sharing Hard Drives - ITunes Responding Slow
Feb 6, 2010
I successfully have my mac mini's external hard drives showing up on my macbook pro, however I have run into into a problem. When bringing up programs like ITunes I get a very slow response or application not responding, I songs and videos show up in ITunes after hours upon hours of loading them in. In Plex t also has this problem. It is hit and miss when I try to play a video that is on the hard drive. This is only happens with video and music. Other files I have no problem. I am using an apple extreme router and an apple express router as a booster.

I am relatively new to Macs, have been using it for 5-6 months. I already know how to do everything but share folders and drives using my network connection. I have an iMac and a Macbook Pro. I have a 120GB Hard Drive hooked up to the iMac via Firewire. How can I share that Firewire External Hard Drive with my Macbook Pro? What are the steps I have to follow to connect both macs? Is there a way that I could also share my iMac's desktop files with my Macbook Pro? I already have a wi-fi connection between both computers, I just don't know how to share that hard drive between both simultaneously..

Usually MacBooks come with Hitachi drives, and I'm wondering if it's possible to install a hard drive onto a MacBook Pro (2.4ghz Unibody) that isn't a Hitachi. (Western Digital, ...)
Would there be driver problems (Heating up, ...) and also the hard drive free-falling locking feature be disabled?

Other than switching the backup hard drive between 2 Macs is there way the hard drive can be shared over the network for the purpose of using Time Machine? My external 1TB drive has two partitions. I'd use each one for a different computer. Right now I'm pulling the plug and switching it to the machine I want to back up. It would be nice if I did not have to do that.

On Final Cut Pro 7, I would have my computer with an external hard drive with footage and I would edit on that. I would then email the small project file to a co-editor who would pick up where I left off. It was a very fast baton pass because he had his own computer with a clone of my external hard drive with the footage. We would pass the baton back and forth all the time.
I am trying to figure out how I can do this in Final Cut Pro X. I understand you can transfer/copy the library, but that would involve copying 100s of GBs at a time. Possibly TBs. And please note that I'm not just looking to copy sequences alone (or "projects" as they're now called in FCP X). In FCP7, the project file would contain all organization, labeling, tagging, etc of all clips, as well as all sequences.
Is there a way two pass the baton in the way I am looking for? This is imperative to my workflow.

For the past 2/3 weeks the itunes store has become extremely slow and to load a page on it takes 2-3 minutes! It also has loads of missing images/links and when buffering a preview track it takes up to 30 seconds to play a few seconds of the track. It is defiantly not a problem my end with internet and it is over 2MB. I have just read on the Apple Discussions that this is happening to other people with the latest update. [URL].

My external drives transfer very slowly on my MacPro. I've been searching for answers and have turned up very little.
Just to make a note, I measured my disk speeds with both AJA System Test and copying files between drives and reading the Disk Activity in Activity Monitor.
I have 3 external drives, all MyBook Premium or Professional, 1x 500GB, 1x 1TB and 2x 1TB in RAID 0. I had them on Firewire 400 and the RAID 0 2TB one on Firewire 800. My transfers on FW were all around 24MB/sec on all drives (much less than what I should be getting with FW400). I then read somewhere that the FW bus on the MacPro uses the slowest speed connected for all FW connections. So I unplugged everything but the FW800 Raid 0 drive and my transfer rate jumped to 40-60MB/sec. This is much better, but still about half or so of what I expect it should be producing from an external RAID 0 setup.
To keep my FW800 backup drive faster, I've plugged the other two into USB2.0. The transfer speeds on both drives are now hideous, around 10-15MB/sec. This is so slow, but I'm not sure what to try to fix my speeds.
The HD's in the external drives are all 7200rpm, and all should be transferring at a higher rate. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Ideally I'd like to get everything transferring at rates they should be transferring at, but I'll settle with my current FW800 speed of 40-60MB/sec if I can get my other two drives transferring at a non-snail pace.
Is this a common issue? I can't believe I'm the only one plugging multiple external hard drives into their Mac Pro. I hope someone has a fix or solution for this. I'm all ears!

When I was on OS Tiger I had all my iTunes content on an external drive to free space on my iMac, content being 224gig on a 300g external HD. I'm now on Snow Leopard and would like to use the Time Machine facility but it says I don't have enough room to carry out.I still have 224g of iTunes on ext and I have 198g available on a 300g Mac HD. Can I split the iTunes content over the two drives i.e music on one and movies on another? If yes, how? Or, to use Time machine effectively should I look at other options?

I am busy ripping my huge movie collection into an iTunes library, so I can play through my new Apple TV to my HDTV. Trouble is, it looks like I'll probably need at least 4TB's of HD space before I'm all finished. What I would like to do is to buy an external HD unit with two 3TB drives, and split my iTunes library across them, while still being able to view all of the movies on both drives all of the time, and give me lots of extra room for future expansion.
Is this possible? If not, does anyone know of an aftermarket Thunderbolt 4TB external HD? I found a 4TB drive, but not with Thunderbolt.

Can I split my iTunes folder onto multiple hard drives?
Someone told me about setting up a NAS device. I wanted to see if there were other alternatives before I make that investment.

I am trying to figure out how I could share a mouse with 2 computers. One of them is a MacBook Pro and the other is a Mac Pro. If I can find a way to share both the mouse and keyboard as well that would be great. I don't have a lot of room on my desk for another mouse and I've heard of people sharing keyboards and/or their mouse. I searched the forums for something of the sort and the closest I came was a guy looking to share between a Mac and A PC. They recommended a A/B switch but if I could avoid using one of those I'd prefer it. Mostly because I don't have on at this exact moment. I thought since both of mine are Macs there might be an easier way?

I'm trying to set up my old iBook G4 as a print 'server' for other Macs on my network. I'm having a problem getting the other computers on the network to SEE the shared printer from the iBook. They can see the iBook as a network computer, but can't seem to connect or even 'see' the usb printer. I've clicked 'Share Printers on the iBook in both Sharing preferences and the Printer and Fax preferences, but no luck.

I'd like to know what the best way would be to share movies on my xserve with other Macs and my TV. I want every device to show changes that are made on the server. (So not that I have to add the movies on every Mac to have them show up). If possible, I'd love this to work through iTunes (it should at least work easily; my mother has to understand you know).

I have a new iMac MacBook air and aebs with a USB drive, both computers are set up as the same user and passed and with full file sharing running. From the iMac I can see the laptop under the shared heading but clicking on it just sits for a while and then says unable to connect, the same thing happens when I click connect as. This happens from the laptop also and also exactly the same when trying to connect to the drive on the aebs.
They only way it works is to go the finder and going through connect to server and this is fine, any ideas what to do? Also my understanding is that the drive on the aebs should automatically connect but this doesn't? Which means every time I restart the laptop I have to manually reconnect to the drive which is annoying as I use it for time machine. I would also like to easily connect both macs together so I can keep files synced easier.

I have 2 macs - mac mini and a macbook pro Both audio outputs of the computers are teathered to my speakers with a Y cable. When computer one is playing music to the speakers, I'll be using computer two for work purposes. Should computer two experience an audible alert (instance message, new e-mail message, etc) the music will dim for about 30 seconds. How do I prevent the "dimming" of the music?

I use screen sharing a lot and want to be able to use it with a "headless" server (no monitor attached). I've notice with two separate "headless" macs that the screen sharing has major problems with the icon jumping and it really doesn't work. Is there a way to trick the mac with no monitor into thinking it has one? Is there some work-a-round?

I currently have a Mac Mini operating as a Home Theatre with my TV, i transfer media files between my MacBook and the Mini via the Wi-Fi network.
The files transfer fine, no problems. However when it comes to modifying or editing the files i have a labourious task of going into the info pane of the file & adding the Mac Mini as a user and then giving it the read/write permissions.
Is there any way that files transferred from my MacBook via this method already give the read/write permissions automatically to my Mac Mini? Instead of going into every file and adding the permissions manually?
Probably is a simple answer to this, but its the first time i've used file sharing between two macs.

I'm looking at the specs page for the MacBook Pro and it reads this...
Your MacBook Pro comes standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive. Choose a hard drive with a faster speed for greater performance. Or you can choose a solid-state drive that offers enhanced durability.
Basically suggesting that the HDD option has a performance advantage over the SSD, but is this the case? I always thought SSDs could read & write quicker because they use solid-state flash memory as opposed to hard disks.
I want to go with the 256GB SSD but I want to know how it ranks in speed.

I have a new 2.4 GHz MacBook with 2 gigs of RAM. and the keyboard response is very slow, especially the delete key. I type a word, and my fingers are faster than the display time. This is particularly noticeable when backspacing and correcting typos. anyone else experiencing this problem? Better yet, any ideas to improve response time? So the mac came last night. everything is fine. Moved my files from my old windows backup drive to the desktop of my mac. About 250 gigs. But now moving files from my backup folder, on the desktop to say, music or pictures, is just as slow within the machine as if I were moving them through a USB connection. Is that normal for OSX? is there a faster way? Windows moves files within its OS, lightning fast.

After finally buying my new 2.66GHz i7 MBP and a fresh copy of MS Office 2011, I was excited to finally have a copy of Office that performed quickly / speedily / comparable in speed to any new Windows machine I've ever used. Not so much. Every copy of Office for Mac I've had has been super slow. I'm talking 20 bounces (minimum) to open, pinwheel to do many functions, etc. Every copy of Office I've used on any Mac has had some degree of sluggishness.
I can't understand it! My bare bones Windows 7 computer (with much slower specs than my new i7) launches Office instantly, no lag, no problems! Why is Office plagued with speed issues? It's absolutely maddening. As a side note, I have always preferred the Windows version of Office to the Mac-skinned version MS gives us. I can't be alone here, can I? How does Office run on a hex-core Mac?

I have a 27-inch, Mid 2011 running the 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5. I currently have 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 in four slots (4 each).
When I uploaded OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 and shortly after uploaded CleanMyMac 2 I started to experience tremendous latency in processing speeds on all applications. Running CleanMyMac 2 multiple times and removing no longer used apps to free up space did little to resolve the issue.
