My 24" iMac seems to gets the spinning colored ball a lot, seems it is running slow a lot more than it did before?

Yesterday morning during working on the mac, the system started to become extremely slow till the point that even the mouse didn't respond any longer and I only got the spinning ball showing. No webpages opened up any longer and closing the program I was working in (Sibelius 7), took a very long time. Â
I did a system clean with Onyx (for Lion), did a virus and trojan check and followed the advice on the Viruses page in this forum on checking the firewall. It wx After that everything seemed to be OK and the system was fast again. Now after about 1 hour working, again it styartys to show the same symtoms, getting slower and having the spinning ball showing up more ad more.Â

I've seen so many posts about this, but with the limited time I have between system freezes, in desperation I come here. I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 on desktop IMac. I have plenty of memory, but don't know how to check the hard disk space (I'm an ubernoob). I've run a couple of the mac maintenance programs still to no avail. I get intermittent SBBOD where NOTHING responds and have to do a hard reboot. Doesn't matter what applications are up, as even startup is very slow when in SBBOD mode. Rebooting, then, doesn't resolve the issue. It runs fine when the SBBOD is not present.
View 6 Replies View RelatedNot really directly Mac related, but I seem to be having a problem with my mouse. It worked fine until a few days ago. Scrolling up on the wheel would work fine, then all of a sudden it would move up extremely slow, and it happens when the wheel is pressed into the click position and when its not.

My iMac is running incredibly slow. Takes 5 to 7 minutes to load just about everything. I can't get on Internet because then my wifi shuts down.

I was recently given a (supposedly) non-functional iBook. I reinstalled Tiger on it, and it did fine through the installation and initial startup. However, everything runs really, really slow. It will work normally for about 5 seconds, and then slow to a crawl. Opening system preferences just took 5 minutes. The beach ball shows up with nearly every click.
Anyone know what this means? Bad ram? Bad HD? It is the 14" 1.42 ghz model with 756 mb ram.
Oh yeah, the reason it was presumed dead was because the previous owner smacked it on something, and the LCD screen is bashed up. The rest of it seems physically fine, but it was subject to some sort of impact.
I am using a MacBook Pro which has the following:
Processor - 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory - 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Mac OS X - Version 10.4.11
Today my finder started to run extremely slow at certain points. When I attempt to look in a folder that contains files that are greater than a couple of megabites it can take up to 3 minutes for it to work or show any preview images/icons. I just get the multi-coloured spinning circle. There is no disruption with any of the applications I am running or my internet access, just to the navigation through my files in my finder window. My Software and security updates are up to date and I hadn't recently downloaded any software. I did have to manually disconnect an external hard-drive last night as it wouldn't let me eject it through my finder window, stating the 'volume was in use.'
I have a 13" MacBook Pro mid 2010 with 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X Lion and it is so slow, the boot take a couple of minutes, when using the laptop general experience is just really slow and crashes alot. Its always kept updated and is well looked after.

My Macbook Pro (from mid-2010) has recently started running EXTREMELY slowly, and the fan continuously runs loudly. From other posts, I have checked my activity monitor to see if any process is taking up a lot of the CPU % and have found that nothing seems high, except the kernel_task which, from what I understand, is supposed to be high. I have also attempted to reset the SMC which didn't fix the problem either. I have taken my computer to the genius bar 3 times now, and they keep telling me nothing is wrong (because it works perfectly there), but when I get it home the fan comes back on, and everything runs slowly.

Sometimes I will go for a while without using my computer. For example, if I step out for a meeting or lunch. Other times I will just be using an application that does not need to access the data drive which is a WD. When I come back to my computer or try to access the data drive I get the spinning BeachBall. For example, I just came back from being out for a couple hours. I came back to my computer which was not sleeping, only the monitor was. I launched Safari and after going to a few web sites everything was fine. Then I went to [URL] and the spinning BeachBall came up and then I heard the WD drive kick in (like a jet firing up if you will). Then the website loaded and the spinning BeachBall was gone. Here is what I have in System Preferences:
EnergyComputer Sleep: Never
Display Sleep: 1 hr
Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible: CHECKED
Wake for network access: UNCHECKED
Does this have anything to do with having Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible: CHECKED? If so, does this mean if I UNCHECK it, the drive will continue to spin until I either a) shut the computer down or b) put the computer to sleep? And, this will remedy the spinning BeachBall? I am using WD RE3 drives so if the above is true, do I need to worry about the drive spinning 24x7 if unattended and the computer never sleeps?
what is the spinning beachball and how do i stop it
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhat is the best use/purpose for the Mac Mini?  My wife's G4 (Granite) Tower is ancient and slow and freezes up frequently so it's time to get another computer.  I have a 5 year old MacBook Pro sitting unused after I bought a 2.13GHz MacBook Air . I am contemplating buying a Mac Mini or an 11 inch AirBook. The Macbook Air would give some flexibility to the household by being portable. She does only basic stuff, nothing fancy, so anything will be better than what she's using now. (At some point in the future, I may give my son the Airbook for college and get a new one for me, but that's not what I want to do now.)So my question to the community would be what do you recommend?
1) Reformat and use the 5 year old MacBook Pro (free)
2) Mac Mini? ($599) (I have an external monitor, keyboard and an external Mac Disk Drive so no need to buy them.)
3) MacBookAir 11 inch ($1100)
4) iMac ($1200) (I think this is overkill for her.)
When moving check boxes in Acrobat Pro 9, the spinning beach ball comes up and stays up for 10 minutes. Not sure if this is a snow leopard issue or cs4. Computer is new. Running x.6, unibody macbook pro.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 700 MHz iMac flat panel with 1 GB SDRAM and running OS 10.4.11. Almost every time I go to do something, I get the spinning ball and have to wait before it performs the action. I even get the ball briefly when I click OK on a dialogue box. I have run the disk utility to repair disk permissions several times, but that doesn't seem to help. What can I do to get the Mac to run faster as it used to do?

Today my emails can not get through. The ball keeps spinning on Mac Mail. There is a triangle next to it, which says when clicked: " Unable to receive Mail: There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account XXXXX or try again. The server returned the error: The connection to the server "mail.optonline.net" on port 110 failed (error 51: Network is unreachable" I verified disk permissions, reset my modem, rebooted, but nothing. I can obviously go online but can not access my mail in any of my accounts. All software is up to date.  I am able to send and receive email on my iPad 2 (wifi) but not on my iMac.Â

I have been experiencing the spinning beach ball. Eventualy my screen turns to dark blue/indigo (not black), then I get Front Row on my screen (V.2.1.7). The only thing that will get rid of it is pounding on keys, usually command or option or escape or some combo of them gets my desktop screen back. It's becomming annoying. I have run disc repair, and repair permissions. This probably happens several times a week (2.3,4) I don't know if there is a way of disabling Front Row ( it may just select something else to appear). I have been thinking about things as drastic as reinstalling system or replacing my Mac.
