OS X :: Unibody 15" Macbook Pro Measuring Performance

Oct 18, 2010

...............

For one thing, games perform terribly. And they used to work quite well! I played through all of Mirror's Edge on this machine and everything was silky smooth. Same with COD5 *and* 6, though I do realize those games were very well optimized and designed from the start to have high frame rates. I also played through Dead Space on this.. the performance wasn't as great as on the other titles mentioned but it was absolutely playable and fun. Now, when I run Amnesia: The Dark Descent or Starcraft II, the performance is absolutely terrible. In Starcraft II I get less than 10 FPS and in both games, I noticed a strange effect. The performance fluctuates. It will run smoothly for about 2 seconds, then the frame rate goes to slideshow-level for about 2 or 3 seconds, then back to smooth, back to bad, ad infinitum.

I did what anyone would try as a first step and killed all apps, especially windowed apps but also background apps that shouldn't really make a difference normally..................

MacBook Pro :: Using Unibody MBP 13" - Performance In Games?

Jan 4, 2010

Well anyway, I got this MBP about 3 or 4 weeks ago. It runs great so far, but when I play a game, it will run fine, then about 10 to 15 minutes after I start, the performance will drop below 50% of what it was, then 10 minutes later, it seems to speed up again.

I've also noticed it seems to kick up performance again once the fan comes on.

So is this normal or some odd coincidence. Also, is there anyway I could prevent this period of low performance from happening.

MacBook Pro :: Unibody Upgrades To Increase Performance

MacBook :: Unibody Macbook Performance Upgrade

Feb 5, 2010

After a year and a half owning one of the first Unibody MacBooks, i feel its time for a little polishing!

I have been considering a new HDD (probably a WD Scorpio Blue 500GB) along with a 4GB upgrade from 2GB provided by Crucial. However, I've been reading articles on SSDs and how the performance is unmatched. Considering the lowering prices, and the approxiamte equal price value of HDD/Ram and SSD, which path should I take that would increase the performace significantly?

I know the main question would be, well what do you use you're MacBook for. Primarly listening to music, surfing the internet, using iPhoto (for viewing and editing, iMovie (for the obvious movie editing I do a couple times a year), GarageBand (a unsigned musician that just loves recording and playing around), and the obvious student tools (office and iwork).

Mac Pro :: Using AtMonitor For Measuring GPU% On ATI 5770

Oct 14, 2010

I just installed an ATI 5770 in a 2008 8-core MacPro and was expecting at least some speed improvement over my existing 2600XT. I had read online that Aperture 3 used OpenCL, which is supposed to supported by the 5770. When I didn't see much improvement, I started up atMonitor to see if I can see any GPU% activity. Nothing. Flatline. Does anyone know if atMonitor supports showing GPU activity with this card?

MacBook Pro :: Can Any Unibody Take 1TB

Jul 1, 2012

I have read in at least one place in the forum that "any unibody macbook pro can take up to 1TB hard drive". As someone who has upgraded Dells and Thinkpads in the past this would make sense, i.e. Any hdd with same dimensions, access method (SATA?) and same spin speed would be supported.

The reason I ask is that I called Apple UK to have a family member's  late 2009 13" unibody upgraded at an Apple store.  Apple UK do not undertake hardware work  and they directed me to a central London office who do their official repairs, and they said if the max capacity of that model when originally produced was 500GB then anything bigger "might use too much electricity".  Would not upgrade beyond 500. Offered me £300 for the old one in exchange for a new mbp. As far as I was aware the bulk of the power drawn was down to spin speed not platter density. Upgrading from 320 to 500 is hardly worth their fee so it looks like a home upgrade.

MacBook Pro :: Need Hot-swap With Old HDD Into A New Unibody?

Aug 25, 2010

A replacement to my girlfriend's pre-unibody 2.5Ghz (4,1 with the 8600GT) macbook pro is soon to arrive (thanks Applecare) and I'm really hoping I can just "hot-swap" the old (but newish) 500GB 7200 rpm HDD (bootcamp partitioned ) into the new unibody replacement. Does anybody think this will work? Will there be EFI/hardware issues?

FYI (this is due to 4 ongoing graphics/screen issues)

MacBook Air :: Brightness On My Air Unibody Won't Go All The Way Up?

Sep 26, 2010

My Macbook Air is doing something pretty strange..

This is as far as my brightness will go up. This is using the keyboard brightness thing on F1 and F2. When I go into the system preferences, I can drag the brightness to the top, but as soon as I release the mouse, it automatically flicks back to where it was before without getting any brighter.

Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause?

The model number of my macbook is A1342 if that helps.

MacBook :: Finding Best SSD For Unibody

Oct 25, 2010

I am thinking about buying a SSD to install in my late 2008 aluminum macbook. Specs are 6GB of ram, 2.4 GHZ processor, and the standard 250GB hard drive which I believe is 5400 RPMs. So my question is, is it worth it? Will I see that much of a performance improvement? I don't reboot that often. I currently am using 92GB of my 250GB hard drive. So I would probably only need like a 160GB or 200GB SSD. Also if I do get one which one would be a good one to get. What should I look for in features.

OS X :: Leaving Macbook Pro Unibody On 24/7?

Mar 7, 2009

I rarely shut down my PCs, is it okay to leave the Macbook Pro on 24/7? It's a notebook and heat might be a concern especially the fact that notebooks were never meant to run 24/7. Then again, my MBP never gets very hot.

BTW, where is the intake/exhaust vents located on the MBP unibody?

MacBook :: Pixel On 2.4 GHz Unibody ?

Im wondering if applecare will cover this though. My MB model is now discontinued (uni MacBook) so even if I can get an Apple store to take it in would they replace the screen or the machine?

Here is a picture that recreates the annoyance almost as perfectly as I see it.

MacBook Pro :: Unibody Won't Sleep At All?

Mar 5, 2010

My MacBook Pro started being weird yesterday. First of all the space bar stopped working - it wouldn't respond at all, or it would act like it was being held down, even though it wasn't.

Now it won't sleep - at all. If I close the lid, the light stays solid, dims once, then comes back solid, and the computer turns back on (the Apple logo lights back up etc). If I choose Sleep from the Apple menu with the screen open - the same thing happens, it sleeps for a second, then wakes back up.

I've reset the SMU and PRAM. I can't think of anything else to do.

This computer is currently on eBay and someone has bid 1,400 on it, I don't want to send it away knowing it has a problem.

Just FYI its a 2009 MacBook Pro 17" with built-in battery.

I wanted to use a MB in desktop mode, with a wireless mouse, keyboard, and external monitor. With the lid closed, and the external monitor as the only screen (main screen), will the MB heat up? I know it might have been an issue in early Leopard stages, but there were glitches where doing this desktop mode will cause the notebook screen to go dark and you have to reboot if you want to use the notebook's screen instead or with the desktop screen. Does this happen with the MBs now?

Windows On Mac :: XP Not Booting On Unibody MacBook Pro

Mar 15, 2009

I just had to switch to a new (late '08 unibody) MacBook Pro. I was able to transfer my Mac files from my 2007 MBP, but the Boot Camp partition didn't get copied by default. I tried moving it with WinClone but when I boot to Windows the machine enables the backlight, spins up the CD, but never does anything else.

I tried to completely remove and recreate the Boot Camp partition but 3 different WinXP CDs (SP2 and SP3) do exactly the same thing. My original WinXP CD is from SP1 so I've tried grabbing a few slipstreamed disc images off the net. They all behave the same.

MacBook :: New Unibody - Archive And Install Or Not?

Mar 24, 2009

So I just upgraded to my fantastic Unibody MacBook today, and it's been a pretty frustrating few hours, after making two trips to two different stores to find the right screwdrivers, I finally was able to move my hard drive from my old white MacBook to the new unibody. I booted it up and it seems to be running great, but my main concern was if I should do an archive and install since this is a totally new computer? I was reading a thread here and someone suggested that. Is it necessary if it is running fine? And also I was trying to find out if the was a way to restore my files to their original locations from the "Previous System" folder without doing it by hand? I couldn't find an answer for that last one.
