I rarely shut down my PCs, is it okay to leave the Macbook Pro on 24/7? It's a notebook and heat might be a concern especially the fact that notebooks were never meant to run 24/7. Then again, my MBP never gets very hot.
BTW, where is the intake/exhaust vents located on the MBP unibody?
I just got a Early 2011 Macbook Pro 15" i7 that has a broken scissor for the "x" key (I still have the black "x" key itself.  Would the scissors from an late 2007 Macbook Pro 15" be compatible (I've got an old dead keyboard for it that had coffee spilled on it)?Â

View 12 Replies View RelatedJust to let everybody know, I found a pretty straightforward way to do this without having to mess with every single app's preferences. I have a 13 mbp and I replaced the HDD with an intel SSD. The original HDD went into the optibay instead of the superdrive. At first I just moved my whole home folder to the HDD, so that iTunes, iPhoto and everything else would have worked on there not filling up the SSD with unnecessary stuff. But then I felt like my HDD was spinning most of the time and I read that, as I thought, it is better to leave the ~/Library folder on the SSD to avoid this, since every running app basically reads and writes to this folder all the time. So here's what I did:
1) I moved the home folder back to the SSD, copying my ~/Library folder from the HDD in there (this is its default location so you don't have to do anything if you never changed it.
I think the title pretty much explains it all. I'm wondering if there's any harm that would come from leaving the power adapter plugged in all the time, but without the MacBook connected some of the time. I'm a college student, and with the way I have my desk set up, I can't really take the power adapter with me everywhere I go. So yeah, I was wondering if there was any harm that would come from it.

I gave the guy buying it the option of me cleaning it out and leaving the applications and essentials on it or just putting in my install disk and wiping it all together. I was wondering if there was a simple way to ensure that my data is off of it (I've done tax returns on it, personal photos, etc...) without clearing data he is just going to have to put right back on it (Firefox, Photoshop, etc...)I thought I could create a new admin account and delete my user account but I just want to be sure that is enough and I couldn't find a solid answer searching the forums. View 7 Replies View RelatedI feel stupid for asking this but why do some applications leave a disk image on the desktop after it is installed? you can eject it and it goes away but then reappears every time you launch the program again. I noticed this happens mainly with applications you get off the web such as Google Earth. It is very annoying because I like to keep my desktop clean. So my question is how do you avoid having this disk image appear every time Google Earth launches for example. Is it normal for some programs? or did I install it wrong?

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy cursor (in all forms) on my macbook seems to be disappearing--it appears that every other column of pixels has gone clear as well as a clear border, leaving only a few black vertical stripes as the normal cursor. It's a black outline when it's the hand and it's a few colored stripes when it's the spinning wait cursor.
Interestingly, when you do the ctrl+zoom in a few degrees, the cursor reappears.
If anyone thinks it matters, I was in the middle of backing up via time machine when it disappeared...
Is it true that when we charged 100% battery and it says on AC power, does it LITERALLY do what it say? i mean the power of macbook pro is not provided by battery but by magsafe instead. is it?last thing, leaving the macbook connected to the working magsafe isn't add numbers up to cycle count right? and is it okay to charge the macbook pro all the time and only using it when we could't find AC power outle?.

I would now like to pass this on to a young person, but I would like to leave them only with the OS X system. The two installed systems may well cause confusuion. How do I remove the OS 9 whilst leaving the OS X intact?

After I buy music from Amazon and the downloader has added the MP3 files to iTunes, it seems that it's also leaving redundant copies of the files in the folder: ~/Music/Amazon MP3. I just found 18 Gig of redundant MP3s in mine!
I can't think of any reason not to delete these, since they're already in iTunes, right? I also see a setting for a download directory in the Downloader's preferences. I'm planning to set it to ~/Downloads and clean it out on a regular basis along with all the other cruft I download.

I think I found a bug in iTunes, because I can find no other explanation. Every once in a while (like once every three weeks) my iTunes window goes down. By this I mean everytime i click a different playlist, view, category, iTunes store, the window moves down a bit leaving this gap at the top. It randomly comes and goes, and its not really a big deal, but it does get really annoying. Is anyone else getting this? and no, im not just moving the window down

I have read in at least one place in the forum that "any unibody macbook pro can take up to 1TB hard drive". As someone who has upgraded Dells and Thinkpads in the past this would make sense, i.e. Any hdd with same dimensions, access method (SATA?) and same spin speed would be supported. Â
The reason I ask is that I called Apple UK to have a family member's late 2009 13" unibody upgraded at an Apple store. Apple UK do not undertake hardware work and they directed me to a central London office who do their official repairs, and they said if the max capacity of that model when originally produced was 500GB then anything bigger "might use too much electricity". Would not upgrade beyond 500. Offered me £300 for the old one in exchange for a new mbp. As far as I was aware the bulk of the power drawn was down to spin speed not platter density. Upgrading from 320 to 500 is hardly worth their fee so it looks like a home upgrade. Â
A replacement to my girlfriend's pre-unibody 2.5Ghz (4,1 with the 8600GT) macbook pro is soon to arrive (thanks Applecare) and I'm really hoping I can just "hot-swap" the old (but newish) 500GB 7200 rpm HDD (bootcamp partitioned ) into the new unibody replacement. Does anybody think this will work? Will there be EFI/hardware issues?

This is as far as my brightness will go up. This is using the keyboard brightness thing on F1 and F2. When I go into the system preferences, I can drag the brightness to the top, but as soon as I release the mouse, it automatically flicks back to where it was before without getting any brighter.
Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause?
The model number of my macbook is A1342 if that helps.
