Apr 15, 2010I just ordered the 2.4GHz i5 15" (with high-res glossy screen) and was wondering whether it was worth it to spend the $225 and buy an Intel X25-M 80GB SSD.Will the performance be that noticeable (for the money)?
Any other suggestions of SSDs near or under $200 would be nice.

It's a secondary computer and only plan on using it for writing, browsing the web, and itunes music.
Are there any programs I should install/delete?
I just want to get rid of all the excess things I don't really need.

Jun 15, 2010So I got an iPad and have been thinking more and more that I don't need the portability of the MBP anymore. Truth is I have not really used the Macbook as a laptop in months. My usage is primarily Internet, word processing, and photography so I really think I can benefit from the added screen size and potentially power of a 27 inch iMac. So my question is:
1) do you think the latest 3.06GHz C2D will be a performance increase from my current MBP for Aperture 3 or should I just spend the extra for the 2.66 i5?

This might help you starcraft junkies out there as it may give a 20% increase in performance. I played MW2 for two solid hours tonight without lockups at 625 / 1340. (11" 1.6 4GB) Thanks go to all in the refrenced thread that contributed to these findings!

I apologize as I suspect this post would be better placed in a Mac os x forum instead. When I had a PC, I would periodically (once a year) wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything. I found this helped to have the computer run quicker, I assumed by cleaning the registry out.
Obviously my Mac runs a number of maintenance protocols that help to mitigate this. Regardless, is there any benefit to a wipe and a reinstall from time capsule, or would the results be effectively the same?

Mar 6, 2009We all know that you could never have enough memory in our computers, so I have a fairly simple question to ask. When OS 10.6.0 comes out a.k.a. Snow Leopard, will all the Intel Core 2 Duo machines have an increased ram capacity. It looks more and more everyday as if 4GB is becoming a standard in machines and all across the board (Dell,Hp,Apple) computer these days are handling 8GB of ram with ease. So does anybody know if when Snow Leopard comes out, will there be a potential for my MacBook to contain 8GB of ram.

For one thing, games perform terribly. And they used to work quite well! I played through all of Mirror's Edge on this machine and everything was silky smooth. Same with COD5 *and* 6, though I do realize those games were very well optimized and designed from the start to have high frame rates. I also played through Dead Space on this.. the performance wasn't as great as on the other titles mentioned but it was absolutely playable and fun. Now, when I run Amnesia: The Dark Descent or Starcraft II, the performance is absolutely terrible. In Starcraft II I get less than 10 FPS and in both games, I noticed a strange effect. The performance fluctuates. It will run smoothly for about 2 seconds, then the frame rate goes to slideshow-level for about 2 or 3 seconds, then back to smooth, back to bad, ad infinitum.
I did what anyone would try as a first step and killed all apps, especially windowed apps but also background apps that shouldn't really make a difference normally..................

Jan 4, 2010Well anyway, I got this MBP about 3 or 4 weeks ago. It runs great so far, but when I play a game, it will run fine, then about 10 to 15 minutes after I start, the performance will drop below 50% of what it was, then 10 minutes later, it seems to speed up again.
I've also noticed it seems to kick up performance again once the fan comes on.
So is this normal or some odd coincidence. Also, is there anyway I could prevent this period of low performance from happening.

Apr 28, 2009I have the stock 2x1 and just ordered matched 4x2gb for a total of 10gb.
Now, I probably won't be needing 10gb for my audio work, so my question is, should I leave the stock ram out for the added benefit of the quad channel ram thingie? Because, according to this report, the 10gb config gives 6.8 throughput vs the 6.5 of the 4x2gb! I thought 4 or 8 slots filled should be faster? What gives??

To begin with, most of the time, my Macbook Pro won't pick up the external HD that I have connected to the router because the Dlink SharePoint software is terrible. Secondly, when it does work, the performance is terrible. I'd say it is probably worse than half the speed of plugging the drive directly into the MBP.
Now I realize there will be a performance degradation when attaching an external HD to the ABSE, but my question is, how much are we talking? A percentage terms (rough estimate is fine) would be the best.

This is the software that I use that may be memory dependent, PhotoShop CS, Final Cut Express 4.0, Other Video Editing software, I also use Handbrake to convert my presently owned DVD's into a iphone format, would that convert any faster or is that only a processor factor

Mar 1, 2010Setting up raid 0 for my mac pro 3,1. Right now I have the stock 320GB drive that I use with Mac OS X, and an additional 500GB drive running Win XP through Bootcamp. I read on apple's site that you could stripe multiple drives to create a raid 0 to increase performance on the Mac Pro w/o the raid controller card. So my question is how do I do that? I'm in the process of picking a new 2TB drive to set up the raid with the 320GB OS drive. Since the 500GB one is dedicated for XP I don't think I could include it in the raid right?

Apr 21, 2010I'm considering replacing the 640 gb Hitachi HDT721064SLA360 in my 24" iMac with a Samsung Spinpoint F3EG HD203WI 2TB drive. I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me whether I will see any performance increases along with the extra capacity. The Hitachi is a 7200rpm drive, while the Sammy is 5400rpm, but the Hitachi has only a 16mb buffer and the Sammy sports a 32mb. Would the Samsung be faster than the Hitachi or would it suffer because of the lower rotational speed?

I have been considering a new HDD (probably a WD Scorpio Blue 500GB) along with a 4GB upgrade from 2GB provided by Crucial. However, I've been reading articles on SSDs and how the performance is unmatched. Considering the lowering prices, and the approxiamte equal price value of HDD/Ram and SSD, which path should I take that would increase the performace significantly?
I know the main question would be, well what do you use you're MacBook for. Primarly listening to music, surfing the internet, using iPhoto (for viewing and editing, iMovie (for the obvious movie editing I do a couple times a year), GarageBand (a unsigned musician that just loves recording and playing around), and the obvious student tools (office and iwork).

Nov 15, 2010I have a 2.4GHz MBP, 4GB RAM, 320M, 500GB HDD. This is my main to-go machine, as well as my clamshell with my ACD. I am planning on ordering 2 updates for the machine (Already ordered the first one, actually)
1. 500GB 7200.4 RPM Seagate w/16MB Cache.
2. 8GB OWC RAM upgrade.
I hear both of these are ridiculously easy upgrades to do, and this also allows me to upgrade my PS3 slim's HDD to 500GB!
Do you guys think this is a worthwhile upgrade for someone who writes code in XCode?
Also, does anyone know how to back up my iWeb site so I don't have to remake it when I format?

Nov 17, 2010So I finally made a choice and have decided I'll go ahead and get the 13' MBP to tide me over till I get my iMac and then use it as my portable.
I've been looking into some upgrades I could do though, looking to stay below 200$. I'm fairly sure I could do all of these fairly easily, especially with all the how to guides online, but are there any caveats that perhaps you more seasoned Mac upgradees would know?

I'm thinking about putting this HDD from OWC into it in order to upgrade to 7200 rpm and also triple the storage capacity. (For less than Apple's 500gb 5400 rpm HDD) I would keep the other HDD to switch back into the MBP incase I ever need to send it to Apple -- will there be any problems with this configuration?
And then I'll probably upgrade the RAM to 6gb. But there shouldn't be any problems with that, unless having a 2gb and 4gb stick together will create problems.
I may get a very small SSD to boot from somewhere down the line...But I'll probably cross that road whenever I decide to sell this model and buy a new MBP. I don't want to spend too much on an outgoing processor.

May 15, 2012So, I have a 2009 MBP 2.66 Duo Core, 4MB ram, 320GB HDD, GeForce 9600M GT 256. I play mostly WoW, LoL, Civ, some FPS, Diablo 3- now that it's out, and a handful of others... I was planning on upgrading my HDD to 1TB and possibly doing a raid configuration for speed, as well as upgrading to 8MB ram. I realize the graphics card is going to be my biggest downfall- and to my understanding, not upgradable. I guess my question is, Is the memory and HDD upgrades viable even though I probably won't be able to do anything with my graphics?
