MacBook :: Finding Best SSD For Unibody
Oct 25, 2010
I am thinking about buying a SSD to install in my late 2008 aluminum macbook. Specs are 6GB of ram, 2.4 GHZ processor, and the standard 250GB hard drive which I believe is 5400 RPMs. So my question is, is it worth it? Will I see that much of a performance improvement? I don't reboot that often. I currently am using 92GB of my 250GB hard drive. So I would probably only need like a 160GB or 200GB SSD. Also if I do get one which one would be a good one to get. What should I look for in features.

This thread is geared towards MB/MBP owners, (specifically those with the late 2008) models. Its very easy to add stain-art to the cosmetics of any laptop. Drops of soup love to introduce themselves to the trackpad and rain drops may bounce off your jacket onto the screen on a wet day. If you're like me, you're heavily bothered by the slightest imperfection and hesitant to clean it, especially the screen.

I'm looking to buy a secondary machine to compliment my primary MBP and I'm torn between a refurbished Rev A MBA 1.6/80 and a Unibody MB 2.0. Right now, my MBP is pretty much acting as a desktop so I'm looking for something I can carry with me around the house and very occasionally on trips. A family member of mine has a Rev A MBA so I'm quite familiar with what it is capable of which is 95% of the things I might use want to use it for.

I'm in the market to buy my first MacBook pro 15" pretty soon and I want to get a case for it. Since the aluminum helps absorb heat from the internals, will a full coverage case cause it to heat up faster and ultimately overheat the laptop? Thanks.
Also has anyone ever had the X Gear Shadow carbon fiber case? Can you give me a quick review?

I just got a Early 2011 Macbook Pro 15" i7 that has a broken scissor for the "x" key (I still have the black "x" key itself. Would the scissors from an late 2007 Macbook Pro 15" be compatible (I've got an old dead keyboard for it that had coffee spilled on it)?

I have read in at least one place in the forum that "any unibody macbook pro can take up to 1TB hard drive". As someone who has upgraded Dells and Thinkpads in the past this would make sense, i.e. Any hdd with same dimensions, access method (SATA?) and same spin speed would be supported.
The reason I ask is that I called Apple UK to have a family member's late 2009 13" unibody upgraded at an Apple store. Apple UK do not undertake hardware work and they directed me to a central London office who do their official repairs, and they said if the max capacity of that model when originally produced was 500GB then anything bigger "might use too much electricity". Would not upgrade beyond 500. Offered me £300 for the old one in exchange for a new mbp. As far as I was aware the bulk of the power drawn was down to spin speed not platter density. Upgrading from 320 to 500 is hardly worth their fee so it looks like a home upgrade.

A replacement to my girlfriend's pre-unibody 2.5Ghz (4,1 with the 8600GT) macbook pro is soon to arrive (thanks Applecare) and I'm really hoping I can just "hot-swap" the old (but newish) 500GB 7200 rpm HDD (bootcamp partitioned ) into the new unibody replacement. Does anybody think this will work? Will there be EFI/hardware issues?
FYI (this is due to 4 ongoing graphics/screen issues)

My Macbook Air is doing something pretty strange..
This is as far as my brightness will go up. This is using the keyboard brightness thing on F1 and F2. When I go into the system preferences, I can drag the brightness to the top, but as soon as I release the mouse, it automatically flicks back to where it was before without getting any brighter.
Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause?
The model number of my macbook is A1342 if that helps.

I rarely shut down my PCs, is it okay to leave the Macbook Pro on 24/7? It's a notebook and heat might be a concern especially the fact that notebooks were never meant to run 24/7. Then again, my MBP never gets very hot.
BTW, where is the intake/exhaust vents located on the MBP unibody?

Today I noticed a dead pixel on my MB in same bar where the Apple logo is. When Safari is open the dead pixel is a bit above the 'o' where it says 'History'. and I can't do anything to fix it. Im wondering if applecare will cover this though. My MB model is now discontinued (uni MacBook) so even if I can get an Apple store to take it in would they replace the screen or the machine?
Here is a picture that recreates the annoyance almost as perfectly as I see it.

My MacBook Pro started being weird yesterday. First of all the space bar stopped working - it wouldn't respond at all, or it would act like it was being held down, even though it wasn't.
Now it won't sleep - at all. If I close the lid, the light stays solid, dims once, then comes back solid, and the computer turns back on (the Apple logo lights back up etc). If I choose Sleep from the Apple menu with the screen open - the same thing happens, it sleeps for a second, then wakes back up.
I've reset the SMU and PRAM. I can't think of anything else to do.
This computer is currently on eBay and someone has bid 1,400 on it, I don't want to send it away knowing it has a problem.
Just FYI its a 2009 MacBook Pro 17" with built-in battery.

I'm still waiting to get a MacBook because I don't think they should be breaking. I have other plastic laptops that lasted for years and never got a crack/chip once. Why does MacBook? Too much money to spend on something that you can't rely on in my opinion... I was thinking of getting a MacBook Pro but don't really wanna drop an extra 100-200 dollars to get a 500 GB harddrive like I would on the normal MacBook.

My new week old unibody macbook hinge is so tight that when i open it, the rest of the macbook slides back a bit.
I have seen radtech's glide kit to adjust the tightness of the hinge of the old macbooks and powerbooks but nothing has been mentioned of the unibody.

Do the batteries on the unibody develop a memory like cell phones do if you keep charging them before the battery is drained completely or almost dead? I don't want to kill the battery life and was just curious if apple had maybe done something in the cpu to control that?

I wanted to use a MB in desktop mode, with a wireless mouse, keyboard, and external monitor. With the lid closed, and the external monitor as the only screen (main screen), will the MB heat up? I know it might have been an issue in early Leopard stages, but there were glitches where doing this desktop mode will cause the notebook screen to go dark and you have to reboot if you want to use the notebook's screen instead or with the desktop screen. Does this happen with the MBs now?

At full brightness the flickering is barely noticeable unless you really tried to look hard for it but you can also see it on website backgrounds with lots of lines, such as the left sidebar on [URL] Also, when the backlight dims after being left alone, the backlight flickers for a couple of minutes and then disappears. I have had this macbook for a bit more than 2 weeks. Should I send it in for a repair/replacement?

I just had to switch to a new (late '08 unibody) MacBook Pro. I was able to transfer my Mac files from my 2007 MBP, but the Boot Camp partition didn't get copied by default. I tried moving it with WinClone but when I boot to Windows the machine enables the backlight, spins up the CD, but never does anything else.
I tried to completely remove and recreate the Boot Camp partition but 3 different WinXP CDs (SP2 and SP3) do exactly the same thing. My original WinXP CD is from SP1 so I've tried grabbing a few slipstreamed disc images off the net. They all behave the same.

So I just upgraded to my fantastic Unibody MacBook today, and it's been a pretty frustrating few hours, after making two trips to two different stores to find the right screwdrivers, I finally was able to move my hard drive from my old white MacBook to the new unibody. I booted it up and it seems to be running great, but my main concern was if I should do an archive and install since this is a totally new computer? I was reading a thread here and someone suggested that. Is it necessary if it is running fine? And also I was trying to find out if the was a way to restore my files to their original locations from the "Previous System" folder without doing it by hand? I couldn't find an answer for that last one.

I just got my first Mac, a unibody MacBook, about two weeks ago, and last night as I was using it, I noticed that the touchpad feels somewhat distorted and uneven. For example, at the moment, it seemed to be indented where I use my index finger the most (towards the center and slightly left of center), and it seems to be raised more toward the right side of the touchpad. When I first took it out of the box, the touchpad seemed to actually be raised more in the bottom left, but since that was out of the way, it didn't really bother me, but now it seems like every time I use the touchpad, the bumpiness of it shifts around to different locations depending on what location on the touchpad I use most.

So perhaps the NVidia compatibility issue affects HDDERASE also? Since when booting from UBCD 4 or 5 it just hangs after selecting it from the menu. All I get is a flashing cursor.
