View 5 RepliesI was hoping someone could help me with this, what I have is a newer mac mini connected to a netgear wndr3700 router via ethernet port, and a W/D 1TB my book for mac external hd connected to the router by usb. I can access the hard drive no problems, but it will not let me move files to it. I'm logged in to the mac as an administrator, and into the router as administrator. it asks for password to move files, i enter it and it comes up with the message i've attached.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently purchased a NAS drive and would now like to copy about 500 GB of files onto it. Obviously this is a slow process! Is there a way I can set up the copy so that if it gets interrupted I can resume the transfer? At the moment the I just know X of 100 GB has been transferred. On the destination drive you can't see any of the files being transferred across until the entire operation is complete (on a pc you can normally see the files that have been transferred immediately) ... I'm a bit worried that if I turn my laptop off or I have any network issues the transfer will fail..
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running a macbook osx 10.5.8 and a windows 7 laptop. I have purchased the Freecom 500gb network drive and installed it on the pc. It took forever to tweak it to see and access the files (kept on getting an error) but I finally managed it. I created new folders on the Freecom hard drive (plugged into my router and accessed wirelessly from both of the computers) so i could see there was something on the drive when i try and connect on the mac. It found the drive on the network, and could open the 'public' folder - yet the folders i created (with full permissions granted) are not there. Also, when i create a new folder on the mac in that directory - it creates and disappears straight away.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have set up an external drive as above. The drive is to be used to archive large amounts of uncommonly used data (not a backup) and then is backed up to crashplan+ off-site. The drive came formatted as FAT32 (I believe.) As we still have one PC and all individual files are smaller than 4Gb, I set up the archive drive as formated out of the box.
Data was written to the drive without issue, backed upi off-site with no issue and accessed a couple times.
The issue came when recently upgraded some itunes albums. These albums had been previously removed from the library and from the computer and stored in the archive drive. These albums were upgraded and redownloaded from apple generating a copy of the album data, but in a superior format (no-drm, greater sampling rate.) This made the archived files obsolete and generated a risk of mixing versions. I decided to delete the obsolete files from archive.
When I attempted to do this by selecting, right-clicking and chosing "move to trash" I was prompted that this was not a "undo-able" action, suggesting that while I was selecting "move to trash," the action would not generate a copy in the trash.Next I was prompted to enter my user and PW. The only user and PW combo that would not cause the dialog to "shake it's head" at me, was my computer user-specific password. The network or drive associated user and PW combos would not take When I entered my computer user and PW, it was accepted, but a dialog labeled "Trash" popped up with small font, reading "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."
Trying to delete only a random selection of one or two files would not work.I checked the drive permissions and was only able to see "You have custom access."This is not modifiable. I attempted to alter my access permissions from the router, but made no headway.
Assuming, with little data, that the FAT32 was perhaps at issue I unmounted the network drive, connected it by USB and reformated as above. After formating, I tried the same procedure with no change in outcome.I am nearly 100% sure that when the drive was connected by usb, I could delete to my heart's content, but not when it is connected via network. I will note that the drive is accessed by first connecting to the router, which the mac sees as a "PC." This access can be controlled, but can be set to anon. When I connect I see two identically named folders. One is a sharepoint folder and one is a volume. They access the same data. Deleting thorugh either route has identical outcomes.

I work in a cross platform environment (windows/mac) where we typically save common files to a shared network drive. I've found when I save a file directly from excel (as opposed to saving it locally, then copying it over) it created an invisible ._filename file in the same directory. I know it's a property/resource file for the file that I just created, but it's a little confusing for some windows users and just clutters up the share directory. Is there any way to prevent the creation of the ._filename file while still saving directly from excel?
(I'd prefer not to save locally, then move to network drive - it's cleaner for me if I can just save directly) So far, I've found that this only happens with MS Office. I've opened a sql file in textwrangler and komodo, edited it, and saved it to the network and no invisible files are created.
NOTE: this is different the the fix that apple had published regarding not creating DS_Store files - that refers to copying files from the finder to a network drive and I don't have any problems with that.
I have about 10 folders I want to sync onto my Network Hard Drive, but I cannot find a app that does it. Is there another way of doing it? It is a Mac to Network Storage. Finally, it must be able to constantly remain in sync.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have a media center machine, and my laptop which i use to load my music with. So i am loading my albums onto my laptop and keeping them in the local Music folder, but i have the rest of my music collection stored on my media machine (also a mac). Im wondering if anyone has a solid free solution i can use where it can sync my music folder on my laptop to the music folder on the media machine. I have looked for some on google but they either cost something, or they dont seem reliable. If i could find one that runs on schedule to back up my music every night that would be prime.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to figure out how to automatically connect a MacBook to a network drive after connecting to the wireless network that the drive is connected to.
Here is the situation:
I back-up my wife's MacBook via Time Machine to an external hard drive that is connected to my Apple desktop. It works great! I even have her system setup to automatically mount the drive upon log-in. Unfortunately, after leaving our wireless signal and then coming back the time machine drive isn't automatically mounted since she isn't "logging back-in". Is there an automator script that can be built to automatically connect to drive X after connecting to wireless network Z?
How do I sync the contents of say, the desktop and documents folders between my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro so the same files are always on both? I only want to do this over the local network because these folders are enormous and I need the syncing done fast.

I have a MacPro 4.1. All my apps are on an SSD off the 2nd Optical drive. I have started using "Chronosync" to back up the data on the main hard drives to a drobo.
I have searched the Chronosync site and sent an email on my problem, but no luck with a reply. I was thinking that regardless of which back up software used, the problem would be the same
I want to reconfigure the data drives and they need to be wiped (they are currently RAID 0 and I don't want this any more).
The question is; when I want to restore the data files that I backed up off the drobo, back onto my MacPro:
1) Do I just drag the files back from the drobo across?
2) If yes, then will apps like... iMovie / iWeb / iTunes etc - which have "links" to different media: will those links be broken? (Remember, SSD with apps won't be touched, just the data they are accessing).
3) If links will be broken... any way to fix this problem? (easily! )
I have searched and searched, and can't find the best answer for this question. What is the best way to sync files between Macs? I have two Macs in my house, and am wondering the best way to sync files between them? For example, when I make a change to document A on my laptop, I would like it to make the same change on my Desktop.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOk so I have a macbook, and I have a desktop that I basically use as a server as well. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way I could set up my PC and Mac to sync files? I mostly just want to sync up my Music and Photos just so I can have them up to date and backed up incase one of my computers happens to kick the bucket on me.
I don't have mobile me and I do not play on purchasing it quite yet. Also my PC is running Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and my MacBook is running Mac OSX Leopard. The PC is connected to my router via ethernet cable, and my Macbook is wireless and uses Wireless N.
I'm using TimeMachine on Firewire HD for backup but also like to use my network shared PC windows vista HD to sync files.
I can see all files either way and also copy manually with explorer or finder. But when I use sync software all shared network HDs do not show up. Apps for Mac or Windows either way. Why?
I know there are ways to sync files across computers, but I wonder if you can do it on the same computer. I have a file in one directory (Direcotry A) named users.yml, and a file in another directory (Directory B) called users.yml.Those directory A and directory B are in the same super directory. Is there any way I could have both of the users.yml sync with eachother so if I changed one, the other file would be the same?

I use BBEdit which has me placing an application support file (CSS) about four or five sub files into the "User" file,. where I never go, partially because it is so far to scroll down to.Â
Thus I keep a handy copy in the file I'm working with so it is just a mouse click away.Â
How do I sync the unaccessible file to the one I can get to more readily. One is for uploading to a website and the other is to support BBEdit so I can preview locally before uploading to the site.Â
I would like to sync my imac and my laptop, but more than just like contacts and such...I want it to sync all my music and files on its own. is there an app that does this? (preferably free) or would I be better off trying to go at it on my own. thoughts guys?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook with Snow Leopard and Windows 7 installed on it. I have my iTunes library of about 250 songs (so not a huge one) in Snow Leopard, not Windows 7. I am interested in purchasing a Zune HD and syncing the iTunes content to it.
Now here comes my question(s):
Does removing the DRM (upgrading to iTunes-Plus) allow the content to be moved onto the Zune HD? If so, could I copy my music, videos, etc. to an external hard drive, boot into Windows 7, transfer the files into Windows, and sync my content to the Zune HD? Would this work? Also, would I sync through the Microsoft Zune software, or what?
Recently a bunch of users in our office have been getting constant Home Sync errors, most commonly with Google Chrome files. File Sync opens and lists a number of errors syncing files including:
Favicons
History
History Index 2012-02
History index 2012-03
Network Action Predictor
Shortcuts
Web Data
among others.
Are the files locked by Chrome or something so Home Sync generates errors? Did something change in Lion or Chrome in the last few weeks because this never happened previously?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn preparation for leaving MobileMe, I was clearing out my iDisk. Im noticing there are some old sync files in the Library/Application Support/ that cant be deleted (Contacts, Bookmarks, etc.).Â
I get the error: "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."Â
I believe these might be old sync files from back in the .Mac days. Not a catastrophe by any stretch, but I'd like to be able to clear everything out before being completely disconnected from MobileMe if possible.
When connecting to a shared computer on Mac OSX leopard... I can see the contents of most shared folders. When accessing a folder I do not have permission to, I am given an error. Folders that I have permissions for, I can see the files. Except two folders. These folders appear empty (even though there are many files in them). I am not given an error and I have the correct permissions to view the folders. Anyone know what would cause some folders to appear empty instead of displaying files?
View 1 Replies View RelatedFor the last 6 months my Mac has been a nightmare to use. It keeps randomly finding files to Corrupt - usually a purchased itunes file - music, video, podcast, etc. So every time I go and sync my music library it randomly picks a file to corrupt which ends up stopping the sync. This happens when I try and use Time Machine, backup iPhoto, copy my files to an external drive, etc. And I've used disc repair as well. And it'll sync one device fine but then decide it's corrupted on another. It renders my Macbook practically useless if I can't work with my files. I ran disk utility and there's nothing wrong with my HD.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just purchased a new Macbook Pro for my mum and I need to find the simplest, easiest and most fail proof solution to sync the two machines together. She is an author and works off an iMac in her study and will use the laptop in another room, but also when traveling around. She is a pretty much a computer novice so I need a method where she won't have to do anything or manually sync and won't have any issues with duplicate copies of files etc. If I was doing this I'd definitely be looking at something like Chronosync as I have a large hard drive full of music and video files but my mum only really uses word documents that don't take up much space. The guy in the Apple Store suggested moving all of her documents and files (only about 8GB) to MobileMe and then accessing them via iDisk from both machines. Would this be her best option?
