I'm getting a new iMac delivered on Tuesday, but I'm in student accommodation, and the internet (which costs 90 a pop!) is set to a certain mac address, namely the one for my old macbook.
I know you can change a mac address (I think, based on some searching that it's with the
Code:
sudo ifconfig en0 ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx command), but does that change it change it permanently or just make it look different? Say, for example, if I had to reformat, or say, boot into windows with boot camp, would I need to change it again or would it be set permanently?
I've been searching all over the interwebs and I can't seem to find a way to change the MAC address of my MBP wireless for Leopard 10.5.6. It appears that some worked with earlier versions of 10.5 but changing it has been "disabled?" somehow with the latest update.
Anyone know anything about it? I tried using instructions from sites like:[URL]
I hope this is the right forum. Recently I received a bunch (4-6 over 2 days) of "returned" undeliverable e-mails from a variety of servers. They all contained the same, vile e-mail that I did not send. I spoke to my ISP CSR- he did not know what the issue was. I spoke to a friend, who assured me it was backscattering and told me not to worry. I found this on the web:
I have a MacBookPro running OSX 10.5.8 and I've been connecting wirelessly with my NETGEAR Wireless N Router (WNR2000) for the past week but then all of a sudden I'm not able to connect to the internet anymore. I keep getting this message "you have a self assigned IP Address but may not be able to connect to the internet."
I've done all the basic troubleshooting with resetting the Router to factory setting and also unplugged and restarted my modem and Router and laptop.
I've called my ISP (Time Warner Cable) and they've gone through the same troubleshooting with me. I know my internet works as I've been using Ethernet and it works. The person over at Time Warner and she said that my internet and even Netgear wireless router is giving the right IP address but when i checked my network settings on my computer, the IPv4 address is this: 169.254.52.45.
I've checked on various sites and i found that IP that starts with 169.254.xxx is the default setting for airports. I don't know how to set the right IP on my airport on my laptop? It's annoying because I've tried setting my airport on my laptop USING DHCP with manual address with the correct IP from my ethernet connection but doesn't seem to work. I'm at the end of the ropes before smashing my router and computer to a million pieces.
How do I change my ip address on Mac OS X Snow Leopard? I have read places that you can apparently type something in the terminal and it changes it? How do I do this and would it be changed forever or revert when I restart my laptop?
I dont know much about DNS and etc. What is it? And is it safe if i change it bc my internet is so slow on safari! I found a site that is telling me to change my DNS but before i do that... I want to make sure it's not some kind of virus thing. Can a virus enter my computer via that DNS?
is it possible to change the MAC address on the airport express ? most routers allow the address to be modified over the admin panel but I can't find a way to do it with the airport.
I have a MBP 15, the computer service of my company has pointed the server address of Mac Software Update to an internal server. It makes me cannot run Software Update at any place but my office. How can I change the address back to the server at [URL]?
I've consulted Help but could not find the answer to this... Is it possible to change the order of the fields in the Address Book? E.g. using the Template?
Using a G4 IBOOK with OS 10.5.8. Recently converted IBOOK from just my wifes computer to both of us so it is now dual usuage with both of us signing in to our respective files/e-mail, etc. My side has a problem never experienced before. My apple mail system address book has all the names the dock address book does but is missing almost 2/3rd of the actual e-mail addressess. I have tried to redo the dock address book in hopes it would change the "internal" mail book, but to no avail. It id difficult to add a recipient to an outgoing e-mail via the dock address instead of the apple mail address book.
I'm trying to setup mail on Lion Sever (7.3). The only way I can get it to accept incoming mail is to specify the whole FQDN of the server in the address. For example the domain name is example.com and I have a user set up called john. Sending mail to john@server.example.com works.
But sending mail to john@example.com (which is what I want) returns an error: 554 554 5.7.1 <john@example.com>: Relay access denied (state 13).
For internal DNS, I have: example.com - primary zonemail.expample.com - alias server.example.comserver.example.com - 192.168.1.2 [URL] - alias server.example.com MX record [URL]
I see references here to problems in mail on 7.3 but not this specific problem.
how to specify which of several email addresses should be used for a member of a group. It starts by selecting the menu item "Edit > Edit Distribution List." From there it explains how to select the desired address for a specific person. All well and good...Â
BUT...Â
Try as I might, doing various combinations of name or group selections in the address book window, I cannot seem to get the "Edit Distributuion List" item to be un-greyed. Effectively, the program is not allowing me to do the edit function I need to do on this one group member.Â
Am I missing the secret handshake in this process? Why should it be this hard to do this simple function?Â
Which raises the larger question of "What did Apple do to the Address Book application in general?" This issue is only the tip of my iceberg. The whole app seems to be harder to use than before.Â

I must be missing something very obvious, but I can't seem to set Address Book to add all new contact info as "Work" entries. I have to edit every new entry and change all the fields from "other" to "work." This appears to happen when I "grab" phone or email info from an email message.
Info: MBP 2.4 Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.7.1), iPhone 3Gs, iPad 1 and 2
I opened my safari today and when I was about to type the website that I want to go to I couldn't find the space where you type it at.. I don't know what happened?
This is probably a stupid question, but why isn't there an address contact button that you can click on in a new message from MAIL? Am I missing something here? In all previous versions of the OS one could just do that and a list of contacts popped up and then you could click on one and it would go to the "To" slot. There's got to be an easier way than to open the contact book, find an address, copy it, then place it in the message "To" slot.
Address-book doesnt work after update from Snow Lepard to Lion 10.7.3 PB says your address-book is 5.0.3. PB says You have adressbook 10.5.3, yes, but now?
I am running Address Book 5.0 on Snow Leopard on one machine, and want to share my contacts on another machine running OSX10.4.11, Address Book v4.0.....can this be done?
my Mac Mini keeps giving me the "name of your computer "Mac mini" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "Mac mini (2)" message lately. It keeps going from there. For example, right now it's up to "Mac mini (5)".
