OS X :: Safari 5.0.2 - Next Update With Speed Improvements
Nov 7, 2010
So we all are on 5.0.2 version on Safari, or should I say most of us. Well we have been on Safari 5.0.2 for some time now and I want to see Apple continuing to improve Safari but they have been slowing down with these updates to Safari. Safari updates are the most exciting updates for me because I browse the web everyday so speed improvements and features are always a plus.

I've got a real odd problem with safari 4. For some reason it is cutting my download speeds in about 1/2 from my server and many other places.
If I restart safari I will be able to download close to my 18 Mbps for a little bit but then it will just start to slow down and after about 30 minutes it will be down to about 6 - 8 Mbps.

Seeing as GeekTool is old and inefficient, I am considering creating a new tool that is less of a burden on system resources.
I want to know what features you would like to see in a new version of the tool. I'm thinking native support for basic stuff such as getting the date and time without having to run a shell command.

MBP13 got a nice screen quality bump compared to the ubMB.... but what about the 15" MBP? Any noticeable improvements? Or was that Apple's way of making MBP13 more pro?

I am selling my Macbook Pro 15" from late 2008 (it has the dual nvidia cards 9600 and 9400) and going to a macbook 13". I know that the current macbook 13" model only has a 9400 but i need the reduced size. Is there any other benefits that changed in the past year?

Would it be possible to overclock the 5670HD in the 21.5" iMac? I heard somewhere, judging by the device ID, that it is a 5730M card. I have been watching the thread on clocking the 5850M, and seeing the great FPS improvements, so was wondering if it would be in anyway possible to do it to the 5730M. Heres what it says in System Profiler:
ATI Radeon HD 5670:
Chipset Model:ATI Radeon HD 5670
Type:GPU
Bus:PCIe
PCIe Lane Width:x16
VRAM (Total):512 MB
Vendor:ATI (0x1002)
Device ID:0x68c0
Revision ID:0x0000
ROM Revision:113-B9850H-133
EFI Driver Version:01.00.416

In general, reviewers are very positive about Snow Leopard, calling it a welcome performance boost with strong under-the-hood improvements. But what's really captivated everyone is the price: at $29, critics see the inexpensive upgrade as a no-brainer for most Mac users. The new 64-bit architecture, built-in support for Microsoft Exchange, and the ability to open Mac OS X files while running Windows via Boot Camp are all welcome additions highlighted by reviewers.
But in the end, it's all about the performance: Applications load faster, and the OS install frees up an average of 7 gigabytes on a user's hard drive from Leopard. That's not to say all is perfect. There are reports of applications that do not work or are glitchy in Snow Leopard. Some of the more popular software that has reportedly had problems includes Microsoft Word, Photoshop CS3 (which will no longer be supported for Snow Leopard), Growl, and CyberDuck. But as with any OS upgrade, some older applications will need to be updated in order to fully work with the new system. As has happened in the past, most software will likely see updates in just a matter of weeks to increase compatibility and performance issues.
Here are some of the review highlights:................................

I was wondering if there was any improvements choosing an Express Card to eSata over using Firewire 800?
This card states a transfer rate on the card up to 300 mbps which is nowhere near the 800 mbps that Fw800 will give?

I stumbled on a website today informing me of ways to somewhat speed up Firefox and was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to speed up Safari, which is the browser I use much more frequently. Any tips would be most excellent.

I have a G3 iBook 700Mhz, 384MB, 20GB with 16MB VRAM. I really want Tiger, but am a bit worried about buying it, installing it, and then finding it runs real bad. So can anyone put my mind at rest? Anyone here have experience of Tiger running on a similar spec machine? In particular, how does it cope with spotlight and dashboard - and do the traditional features, like Expose still work really well? And how does Safari compare speed wise? If it is as fast or faster than Panther, then I will be ordering Tiger later today.

Here is my wish list for Safari:
1) Improved Speed
2) Improved compatibility
3) Enhanced stability
4) Cover-flow option for bookmarks, history, and downloads
5) Multiple search providers available from drop-down in Search Box (Amazon, Apple Store, IMDB, Wikipedia, Custom)
6) Search Box auto-complete/suggestions
7) "Mute/Volume" button for web audio
8) Downloads in drawer or tab instead of pop-up windows. Ability to search, quick view, and launch downloads within said area. Ideally, it would be contained in the "collections" section with history and bookmarks.
9) Ability to view/use Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Pages, Keynote, Numbers and other files within the browser (similar to current PDF ability)
10) Phishing Filter
I know that an update to Safari will address speed, but what about the other features?

I am trying to change my DNS on the DNS tab of the going through System Preference/Network/Advanced/DNS tab. However, the current DNS are greyed out and I can not overwrite them. After watching a host of videos and going to the local Apple store, I see that I am the only one that has this problem. It is as if the IP address assigns the DNS and locks it. Is this correct?

Today a new auto-update came up and I ran it - it included a tweak to 10.7.3 as well as Safari and a few others. My Safari (5.2) got completely trashed. Will not even open any more - all it does is crash immediately upon launch. I have a Time Machine backup from about 40 minutes earlier I can recover from if needed. Meanwhile I'm lucky I have a MacBook Pro as well, and am able to get online while I am completely restoring Lion from a patchstick.
I'll post the crash report (I copied and saved it) once I get back up.Incidentally, I've been getting a lot of crashes in Mail as well. Always when the computer is asleep. Anyone else having these problems - or have a solution?

Sorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

I am interested in adding a webcam to my desktop Imac (power pc)- Isight is no longer available- an option that I found is the Ecamm Image- but apparently it is USB and not firewire and it will only run with high speed usb- how do I know which type is on my computer? I checked system profiler but quite frankly wasn't sure of the designations.. does anyone have any experience with this camera, by the way? is USB 2.0 by definition "High Speed"?

I have a WDS local network at my house. I use a Airport Extreme in my main part of the house and a Airport Express for my back part of the house i.e. the backyard. Now every two weeks or so my internet speed through my Airport Express slows down about half the speed but when I am connected trough the Airport Extreme my speed is normal. I know this because I test my connection very often. Now when I want the Airport Express to get back up to speed I have to unplug, and plug it back in. Then after awhile it starts to slow down again in a time period of two weeks or so.

i have a 1.5 Mbps AT&T DSL connection, and multiple speed tests show a download speed of 1.2 Mbps (and 200 Kbps upload). when i download files, such as software updates from Apple, various podcasts, and even Silverlight from Microshaft, the speed is always between 140 - 160 Kbps. i contacted AT&T, and the rep said it was because of buffering by the servers i was receiving the files from. is this a reasonable explanation? is this an accurate use of the term "buffering"?
