I was wondering if there was any improvements choosing an Express Card to eSata over using Firewire 800?
This card states a transfer rate on the card up to 300 mbps which is nowhere near the 800 mbps that Fw800 will give?
The past few months I've made threads asking about eSata express cards and external storage and have received useful information. However, I've always neglected to ask this obvious and direct question. I've been recommended a few cards, one from OWC always comes up. But I never bothered to ask about "dual" versions because I thought I'd be able to find it on my own.
After weeks of casually looking around I wasted a few hours yesterday hard core searching online. I really need a storage solution for my exploding cache of photos and video that's been stockpiling and needs editing.
Perhaps FW800 or another interface could be a better solutions. But when I choose my new MBP 17" a few months ago I specifically kept the fact it retained the express card slot in mind because of it's higher transfer rates.
I'd get 1 TB but I'm thinking realistically I need 2+ TB of storage... and also I think I need to finally get my rear in gear about redundancy. I use Time Machine with an external FW400 HDD and back up my music separately there too but want to keep in mind future space should have redundancy in mind.
I have an eSATA drive that was formatted on Windows using Bootcamp. It is connected via an Express Card. I want to now format it for OSX. But when I boot to OSX I don't even see the drive. Is there something I have to do to enable the Express Card?

At first it could not be seen so I went to there site and downloaded the driver for it and got several grey screens of death kernel panics. I know the Sonnet Tempo SATA Pro ExpressCard/34 is supposed to work on the new unibody but after all that I bought to get this system up to the speed I need, was trying to avoid another 280 dollars and want another 4gb Ram chip more. [URL]. I am only running one external drive like this for PS scratch, OS backup and a working drive that is partitioned in 3 sections. Wondering if there is another express card that is working in the new 15 in 2.93 without any issues.

1) Has any one else had the same experience?

I'm new to Mac and loving it so far. I've been using Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit for graphic and web design the past several years until I just couldn't take it any longer. Trouble is I had all my client files on an external Seagate hard drive with only an eSATA connection on the device (which I connected to my PC with the included eSATA PCI card.
But apparently my new Mac Pro will only accept PCI-express cards, and I'm having a hard time finding a PCI-express eSATA card that supports a 64 bit OS (I'm using Snow Leopard).

on snowleopard- which means it's non bootable, but it works- yet i was wondering if the drivers were installed right- if i right click on the card icon in the finder it reads Silicon Image and Sil 3132 SATA Link controler.
I just installed Vista on my Mac Pro (2.8 GHz Octo, 4 GB RAM, 8800 GT, 500 GB Caviar SE from WD) and I get 5.9's for everything but "Disk data transfer rate" - which is a 5.7. I know that is nothing to complain about, but I am just wondering what would earn a 5.9? Would it take a raptor to do that? Or just mine is not all that fast or something?
View 19 Replies View RelatedI have used the disk for a number of years - all appeared to work fine - I am now backing up my data and only get Very slow transfer speed using firewire 800 - 2 hrs to transfer 1.36 Gb. Disk is connected to a Dual 1.8 Ghz Power PC G5 with firewire 800 - another d2 disk is connected to it with firewire 400 and I have just connected a Maxtor disk using firewire 400 to that. I have tried Updated the firmware (it did require it), tested the device alone on both 800 and 400 connections both slow. Restarted everything and used disk repair to check and repair the disks - repaired permissions on the startup disk.
Connected all the devices together again | LaCie 800 - LaCie 400 - and Maxtor 400. It sends data to all the other devices fast (~ 3 min for 1.6 Gb) through the LaCie 800 disk connection!, but does not send data to the LaCie 800 fast at all. Tested the other devices alone as well - they are all fast. Have also performed a TechTool Pro Ver 4 test on the the disk (Disk type ST325082 3A 232.89 Gb LaCie d2 External LUN0 revision 3.03) Passed the surface scan, disk controller and read write tests. Is the disk failing?

I did some experimenting this evening to assess data transfer rates to various storage items in my home network which uses a new Time Capsule as the router/hub.
Connected to the Time Capsule are the following:
- Mac Pro (GigE)
- Vista Machine (GigE)
- MBA (Wifi)
- Raptor Drive (USB 2)
- Time Capsule Drive (Internal)
Transferring a 650MB file between devices yielded the following results:
MP > Vista (GigE) = 288 Mbps
MP > MBA (5GHz) = 52 Mbps
MP > MBA (2.4GHz) = 43 Mbps
MP > Raptor (TC USB) = 38 Mbps
MP > TC Drive (Internal) = 38 Mbps
MBA (5GHz) > TC Drive (Internal) = 22 Mbps
It seems that transferring files to a USB drive or the internal drive on the Time Capsule is painfully slow. It took 2:20 to transfer the 650MB file to the Time Capsule over GigE vs. 0:20 seconds to another machine. What's worse, is that the data transfer speeds to the TC are a function of link speed, the slower your connection, the slower your transfer rates. It's not simply limited by some bottle-neck in the TC. It took 3:45 to transfer the same file to the TC from the MacBook Air over the 5GHz WiFi connection. When I complained about this the other day at the Apple store, the "Genius" said that it's due to QOS built into the router to ensure it doesn't kill my web browsing.
I am doing an initial back up for Time Machine. I've got 56Gigs worth of data to back up from my 2Ghz Uni Body MacBook (with 4gig of Ram & running OS 10.5.7). I have a newly purchased Airport Extreme base station to which is connected to a Western Digital 1 Gig External HD. I am getting a transfer rate of about 1 gig per hour. Is it really this slow? I am using a 5Ghz network to reduce interference and they are very close to each other.
I tried connecting the WD drive to the MB. After I switched off Virus Barrier V5 and stopped Spotlight indexing it was quite fast. However there didn't seem a way of tricking this backup to think it was done via Airport Extreme. How could this be done?
It looks like my MB is going to have to be left on and stay at home for the next couple of days!
I have a 15" MacBook Pro from a couple of years ago (2.0 GHz) and I am about to upgrade my harddrive from 75 GB to 500 GB (and from 5400 to 7200 rpm). I think I am going to simply clone my harddrive, so I bought an enclosure for my new drive to use when transferring all my data. The enclosure I purchased works with usb 2.0 or eSATA.
My question is, should I take advantage of the eSATA speeds? Do you think it's worth it? For another 50 bucks I could by an expresscard and a cable that will allow me to do the transfer via eSATA. Should I bother or should I just stick with USB 2.0? I hear USB 3.0 is coming out early next year, so I was thinking I shouldn't bother with eSATA (though 50 bucks isn't much of an investment). But I'm not about to wait for USB 3.0 to come out. Do you think it would be worth spending the money to get the extra speed for this transfer? My 75 GB drive is almost full.

typically, i am thinking transferring data via a wired network(Hub) would be the best way, based on the total data size , or alternatively an external HDD , Could someone provide me with some facts, tips, or perhaps a good guide line or a URL so I can achieve this with no embarrassment and a happy ending result for my client.
i just got my brand new macbook pro 15" 2.66 ghz i7, 4 gb ram, high res, 500 gb 7200 rpm hdd, and I am ecstatic this computer is SO fast it blow my mind all over the table, the question i have is about the SD card slot, is there limit on data transfer for the SD card slot or is it limited by the speed of the card? i have a 16 GB sandisk extreme 2 that transfers @ 15 mb/s and a 4 GB sandisk extreme 3 that transfers @ 30 mb/s so can i transfer at those speeds or is it buffered? i tried importing 1 GB i had on the slower card and it transferred extremely fast but i cannot remember how fast the usb 2.0 was because i never really paid much attention.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI need to buy a firewire cable so I can transfer photos and my itunes library from my older macbook to my new imac. I want to buy the cable from monoprice but I am confused by the number of options I have when searching.
I get results that have 4, 6, and 9 pin options. Do I need the 9 to 9 pin cable? 6 to 6 pin? Some other combination? My macbook is around 4 years old, pre-leopard, osx 10.4.x. The iMac is brand new.
Not sure what I did to cause this, but all of sudden the front side USB ports have reduced transfer rates.
What can cause this issue all of sudden?
I just installed a new Hitachi E7K1000 1GB HD into my Powermac G5. I then found out my Powermac only uses drives at the 1.5GB transfer speed rate... i checked the specs for the hitachi drive at OWC and it says it is 3.0GB, not a 1.5/3.0GB hybrid. Could this cause trouble? The drive seems to be working fine so far... but does this mean this hitachi drive is not compatible with my mac?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed a Dynex eSATA pci-e card into my Mac Pro. When i attempt to shut down, it never works, it hangs up with a blank screen and the wheel going round and round forever. Also, If I try to start up with an eSATA external drive on, it will never fully start up-just hangs up again. It will work if I plug the eSATA cable in after booting, then turn on the external drive, and likewise, eject it and power off before shutting down. I really do not want to have to go through this every time I start up / shut down.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust got the new Newertech 6G ESATA card from OWC and I'm having problems getting my ESATA cable fitting into it. It does not go in very far, and never latches on to the two tabs. Before I go out and buy a new cable or return the card, please take a look at the two pics and tell me what's wrong. I'm afraid to try to force the cable in harder since it doesn't seem normal that there should be so much resistance.
EDIT: Jammed it in real hard and it seems to have seated itself, but the drive is not showing on the desktop or in Disk Utility. Mac Pro recognizes the card just fine (slot 4). Will try another cable, but something feels wrong about the card. It shouldn't take this much force to plug the cable in.

The docking station works perfectly well using the USB2 port, but I just can't get the eSATA card to work.I have a cheap sil3231 card, I'm using siliconimage's latest OS X drivers, with a single drive (so no RAID), and it won't mount. I played around with the jumpers, nothing. Can anyone think of something I missed?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use a WD Elements external HD formatted to Mac OS Extended, and the box says that the HD should have a USB 2.0 adapter, meaning it should transfer over 400 MB/s. Unfortunately for me, I've had many problems with this HD and it is now crawling at around 2.5MB/s, slower than 1.1 speeds. At the moment, it is at 750MB/93.51GB - About 21 hours. This is unexceptable, and I make HD videos, which are usually from 200 - 500 MB, and this would take AGES! I had no problems on my PC with this drive. Please help me! Should I format it to something else, get a new one, or something else? Please leave your suggestions below. Also, if you have an HD that works well, please leave it below,
P.S. All ports are free, except for the one with the HD in it. All that I have hooked up to my Late-2009 21.5" iMac is my wireless Apple keyboard, and my Magic Mouse. Nothing else hooked up to the computer AT ALL!
How can I find out what my transfer rate is for ethernet and wireless. I switched over to Time Capsule and all N network?
Also, how can you tell if you have the gigabyte cable or the regular cat 5 cable?
Has anyone come across any Firewire memory keys? (Similar to the USB Keys we have now days). Firewire has a much higher transfer rate than USB 2.0, so I was wondering if any company made the firewire memory keys. I did a quick google search but didn't come up with anything recent. All the articles I read were from years ago.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am wondering why my MBP takes about 7-8 mins to copy 700 mb files from the external (Seagate FreeAgent pro 500 Gb) and of course, it takes about 1 hour to copy 7 Gb files.
However, this problem has occurred only copying file from external to my MBP, the transfer rate is fine when copying files from MBP to external
Note : I've already repair the disk by using disk utilities, but it doesn't help me at all.

I've got a 2008 Mac Pro with 4 internal hard drives that are in a 0+1 software raid. Unfortunately, this prevents me from using Boot camp on any of these drives.
I'm curious, is there a PCIe card that adds eSata ports that would allow me to put Windows XP on an external enclosure that is bootable?
I've been scouring the message boards and forums and have found cards by CalDigit, FirmTek and Sonnet, but I have no idea if any of these will support with Boot Camp/Windows.

I have a late 2008 12" MacBook with a FireWire 400 slot (only). I am hooking up an 8TB Raid hard drive to it for digitizing, backup and editing on FCP 6 and would like to have a higher speed available than the laptop's FireWire 400 provides. Is there a way to augment/build out the MacBook to utilize either a FireWire 800 slot or an eSATA EC2 card? I don't think this version of the MacBook (MacBook4,1) has a PCI or PCIe card slot. Although I believe it may have a mini-PCIe card somewhere, as the last page of the Users Guide says (under Europe—EU Declaration of Conformity):
"Hereby, Apple Inc. declares that this 802.11a/b/g/n Mini-PCIe card is in compliance with the R&TTE Directive."
