Bit new to mac os x as i only picked up my first mac on saturday. Must say im extremely impressed with it so far.
1.) Can i stop spotlight searching certain folders?
2.) Can i password project certain folders or make them inaccessible to certain users? Im from a ux background so i presume i could just 700 the folder(s)?
Is there a way to password protect a file? or Hide the file from being seen from anyone? I've got my text document which I have all of my bills, account numbers, web site to pay the bill with passwords and everything and I'd like to hide or password protect it.

View 19 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty anal about the cleanliness of my documents folder, so I cannot stand having a folder called Adobe or Microsoft User Data in my docs folder.
I want to be able to hide those folders without adding a . before them (because then the apps won't be able to find the folders). Is there any way to do this? I know you can also change the permissions, but again, then the apps cant use the folders.
Anyone know of a good app that password protects folders?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI restored one disk onto another disk using Disk Utility and now I have three aliases on my hard drive called "var", "tmp" and "etc". I know what you're thinking... those are part of the Unix background in Mac OS X and I am smart enough to know that I cannot delete them, so my question is. How the heck can I hide them. I really don't like seeing them there. Other than that, my new drive is running fine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an appointment to bring my iMac in tomorrow for service at an Apple store.I think all I need is for the inside of the front glass to be cleaned, and they told me I shouldn't need to leave it, but who knows. I just realized that I haven't ever brought any computer in for service in 20 years of owning them (I've been lucky, I guess).I want to do everything I can to protect my privacy.I've moved sensitive documents and information off both internal hard drives.I've emptied the trash.I've also cleared the history and cache on all three browsers I use.
I'm not going to go to the trouble to move all video files and pictures off my internal hard drives.It's way too much data.There is definitely stuff I consider private that I don't want others to look at, but I just can't see moving all of it.I'd love to password-protect the folders so nobody can get in them, but apparently that isn't possible (I don't want to go through creating encrypted disk images--again, way too much data). Is there anything else I should do to protect my privacy before I bring my computer in for service?Is there any easy way to password-protect folders and files? I went in Finder and locked one folder, but it still opens up with no problem, so that didn't help.I presume this is because I'm the only one who uses my computer and I don't require a password on startup.I also presume that such a password wouldn't prevent techs from looking at something if they were so inclined.
I'm not as worried about all of this as I would be if I were bringing the computer in to some independent servicer (instead of the Apple store where I'm bringing it).But I really don't like the idea that the techs will have access to everything on my hard drives while they are servicing my computer.

I have set up Lion Server and so far it is doing everything that I want it to do. I have sucessfully connected to the Lion server from my iPad using webDAV. I can see the sharepoints that I have created just fine. What I want to do is hide home folders when connecting to Lion from the iPad. I know I can skip seeing the home folders by typing in the sharepoint name directly but I want users to access several different sharepoints when they hit the server.

This past weekend I transferred my OS and apps to a newly installed SSD drive.
During the process I had to move some files around in order to get The OS and Apps on the SSD.
I used a technique that utilizes the Terminal and the chflags command.
My issue is now I can not hide the files and folders that are usually hidden.
I can't remember the exact method I used to unhide hidden folders and files. I can't even find a reference to it in my web browsers history.I have searched on the web for solutions along these lines:Â defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean FALSE ; killall Finderchflags hidden sudo chflags hiddenÂ
But none of these approaches have worked. I have downloaded Onyx, TinkerTool and Show Hide Invisible Files.
I have used them as best I understand to hide the normally hidden files and folders, but nothing has worked.

I'm looking for software that can silently sync local folders with remote webdav folders.
It would also be nice if I could just relate to the local folder, and the software would automatically synce new files in both directions.
I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD. When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??

I have a question for the the Safari geeks out here (1.1.1 version 100.1, running on MacOSX 10.3.2): I have imported my bookmarks from a Mozilla install on a Linux box, based on a hint I found here with the debug options (worked great!!!), and I have the following questions related to adding a new bookmark (based on the fact that my bookmarks are organized in multi-level folders, e.g. OperatingSystems->Linux->Security->Firewall, etc.):
- when opening Bookmarks->Add bookmark ..., how could I possibly collapse all the levels, so that I can easily scroll, and open/drill down into the appropriate level of bookmarks, without having to scroll thrrough all (by default) expanded levels? ... especially critical as some sub-categories may match names, with different higher level bookmarks, thus having to make sure I am where I want to be (e.g. I have a Security folder under OS->Mac, as I have one under OS->Linux, and I have to remember which one I am under, if the "parent" is out of the scrolling window);
- is there any easy way to add a new "level/folder", through Bookmarks->Add bookmark, at the time of salvaging a new one, vs. having to open the Bookmarks in a new window, adding the folder, then returning to add the new bookmark?

I have folders apperaing in all of my documents folders. I can not click on them. They are typically called "folders," "PDF Documents," & "Speadsheets"Â

I have had my blackbook for a while now. I have bought a cheap ebay cover that covers the keyboard as well as the palm part and it works good (I think) except it is starting to rip and does place keymarks on my screen. I have some dirt on the bottom of my screen under the plastic and in the hindge I see.
I need to find a way to clean it all and keep my keyboard and palm rest clean. I am a college student and on the go all the time so keeping a cloth and such in the middle is kind of hard.
But is there any other way of keeping my macbook in nice shape. I do have scratches on the outside but that is a different story.

I have all my media on an external Firewire 800 drive. On that drive i have multiple folders and sub folders. The problem is when I click on any of those folders it open the contains in a new window, rather than letting me just click through. it's frustrating as I can end up with half a dozen windows open to get to one file. This only happens on external drives. Is there a way to fix this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI imported a large store of outlook email messages into iCloud mail - including many folders and subfolders some time ago. I would now like to delete the lot of them. Deleting a single message or folder works fine. However, when I try to delete a folder with subfolders, even though I reply to the 'are you sure' message by clicking "yes," the folder and subfolders initially disappear yet, immediately upon refresh, all folders and subfolders reappear and I find that the instruction has been completely ignored.
