OS X Mountain Lion :: Can't Hide Folders And Files That Are Usually Hidden

Sep 8, 2014

This past weekend I transferred my OS and apps to a newly installed SSD drive.

During the process I had to move some files around in order to get The OS and Apps on the SSD.

I used a technique that utilizes the Terminal and the chflags command.

My issue is now I can not hide the files and folders that are usually hidden.

I can't remember the exact method I used to unhide hidden folders and files. I can't even find a reference to it in my web browsers history.I have searched on the web for solutions along these lines: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean FALSE ; killall Finderchflags hidden sudo chflags hidden

But none of these approaches have worked. I have downloaded Onyx, TinkerTool and Show Hide Invisible Files.

I have used them as best I understand to hide the normally hidden files and folders, but nothing has worked.

Applications :: ITunes Duplicated Video Files And Hide Them

May 15, 2009

I tunes imported vid files that I had on my hd last year, now, I decided that I didn't want these in ITunes, so I deleted them from ITunes. I then burned all of these files to a DVD and then deleted them from my downloads folder where they were always kept. Today I noticed that deep within ITunes, there is a folder called ITunes music and in that folder there is a sub folder called movies, where I discovered duplicates of the vid files I had previously deleted from my downloads folder which were imported by ITunes last year. I didn't know this could happen in ITunes!

OS X :: How To Hide Folders

Feb 22, 2009

I'm pretty anal about the cleanliness of my documents folder, so I cannot stand having a folder called Adobe or Microsoft User Data in my docs folder.

I want to be able to hide those folders without adding a . before them (because then the apps won't be able to find the folders). Is there any way to do this? I know you can also change the permissions, but again, then the apps cant use the folders.

OS X :: Any Possibility To Hide (VAR / TMP And ETC) Alias Folders?

Jan 5, 2007

I restored one disk onto another disk using Disk Utility and now I have three aliases on my hard drive called "var", "tmp" and "etc". I know what you're thinking... those are part of the Unix background in Mac OS X and I am smart enough to know that I cannot delete them, so my question is. How the heck can I hide them. I really don't like seeing them there. Other than that, my new drive is running fine.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Hide Home Folders From WebDAV On Server?

Apr 3, 2012

I have set up Lion Server and so far it is doing everything that I want it to do. I have sucessfully connected to the Lion server from my iPad using webDAV. I can see the sharepoints that I have created just fine. What I want to do is hide home folders when connecting to Lion from the iPad. I know I can skip seeing the home folders by typing in the sharepoint name directly but I want users to access several different sharepoints when they hit the server.

OS X :: Unable To Access Folders / Folders Are Locked After Transferring Files From External Hd

Aug 28, 2009

I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD. When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??

Applications :: Utility To Right Click And Move Files Into Folders?

Jan 4, 2009

On the Windows side, I like to right-click and "Send To" except I'd usually prefer it *moves* selected files instead of copies. Is there a Mac utility where I can right-click and move to configurable folders? It looks like the only "folder" by default is the Trash ("Move to Trash"). I know there's the left-hand collapsible pane with Places, but I don't want to clutter it up with too many folders that I could neatly tuck into a contextual menu.

Applications :: MoveAddict - Cut And Paste Files Merge Folders?

Jun 19, 2010

I'd like to announce moveAddict, a Snow Leopard-only application that provides a functionality the Finder was missing, the ability to move files using the keyboard. Its meant to replace dragging and dropping for anyone that would rather use the keyboard instead of the mouse.

In a nutshell, you can use it to cut files or folders and then paste them where you want.

As a bonus, you can also use it to merge folders instead of completely replacing them, another functionality that the Finder was missing.

[URL]

For anyone that hasn't used cut and paste for files before, here's a short description:Cut - when you cut files the only thing that happens is that moveAddict remembers the location of the files, it does not change the files in any way Paste - when you paste, moveAddict moves the files from their original locations to the new one If you cut a file and forget to paste it, nothing happens!

moveAddict does not change the system or the Finder in any way, it's just a regular application which you can uninstall by deleting it.

I am the developer of moveAddict, for any questions/suggestions/bugs please reply to this thread or contact me personally.

Applications :: Finding Application That Analyzes Hdd And Lists Which Folders/files Are Largest?

Aug 23, 2010

I was just thinking about the stuff I have on my HD, and I'm not really sure what is eating up the 500gb HD I have installed in it (with only 50gb or so available at the moment). The usual culprits (iTunes and iPhoto library) are both on externals.

And i don't *think* I've got nearly 450gb worth of audio work on here.

So my question is, is there an application that will scan through my system HD and tell me which olders/files are taking up the most space? This may give me some idea of what I should start getting rid of.

OS X :: How To Hide Invisible Files On Leopard 10.5.7

Jun 25, 2009

On Leopard 10.5.7, I had to unhide my invisible files for some job using the command:
#defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
#killall Finder

I am trying the reverse commands but the Finder still shows files what are supposed to be hidden.I tried:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
followed by a killall Finder and even reboot.

I would like to avoid a re-install. Who can confirm a working solution as some in this forum suggest that the above reverse commands are no longer effective on Leopard?

OS X :: How To Hide Files That Are Located Besides User/Username... In Terminal

Jul 13, 2009

I've been wondering, if there is a way to hide files that are not located in "User/Username/...." in Terminal?

The command I use to hide the files for example is: chflag hidden ~/Desktop/*

However, if I the file/folder I want to hide is not in 'User/Username..." I will not be able to hide it... So how do you change it so that you can hide the folders that are not located in "User/Username"?

Also, I've ran into a problem!

My "Username" that one that has an house icon is missing when I access it from Machintosh HD --> Users Folder.

I guessed that it was hidden somehow but not too long ago it was in the User folder... So I typed in "defaults write com.apple.finder ShowAllFiles True" and I found a bunch of weird files on my Desktop and my Machintosh HD... and I found the Username house icon... I do not know what I did in terminal that hid it.
