OS X Mavericks :: Silence Badges In Do Not Disturb

Jun 2, 2014

I am using a Macbook Pro (2011 model) and running OS X Mavericks. I am able to turn on Do Not Disturb in the Notification Center, which hides banners and alerts. However, I would like badges to also be hidden when I turn on Do Not Disturb (without having to separately disable badges for the individual applications).

How I would go about doing it?

OS X Mavericks :: Can't Install On SSD

Jun 5, 2014

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro 13".I had a hard disk failure almost 2 weeks ago. [I accidently kept the mac running by using the Caffeine app while keeping macbook in my backpack and roaming around an exhibition]. I saw blinking folder icon and couldn't detect my hard disk at all.

Then I reset SMC and tried to detect it but it didn't work.My macbook passed the Hardware Test.So I ordered and installed a new Samsung 840 Evo SSD on my macbook and tried installing mavericks but the Istalled Failed with the following error log: localhost OSInstaller[384]: update_dyld_shared_cache exited with 1

PackageKit: Install Failed: Error Domain=PKInstallErrorDomain Code=121 "An error occurred while updating system extension information." UserInfo=0x7fab0300ebb0 {NSUnderlyingError=0x7fab034857f0 "The operation couldn't be completed. (kextcache error 71.)", NSLocalizedDescription=An error occurred while updating system information., arguments=

Install Failed: The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance. I used the same mavericks installer USB and installed my SSD on a friend's macbook pro with the same year, make and specs and it installed fine. However, when I reattched that SSD with installed mavericks and booted my macbook it gave me a blinking globe and question mark icon. Apart from SSD, I'm using all the original RAM and other parts.

OS X Mavericks :: Bar On Start Up What Does This Mean

Aug 31, 2014

21inch iMac with Mavericks. Two peripherals, a hard drive for 'Time Machine' and Canon printer. All updates in place.

After a normal start up and shut down this morning I start up this evening to find, on the white screen the usual Apple logo, the rotating wheel and a new bar at the bottom.  This 'loading bar' takes about ten minutes to complete then the screen goes black. Start up again - same thing.

On the third start up I hold down the 'alt' key which leads to 4 options. I choose my 'Time Machine' and after 'searching' I'm offered a list of recent backups. I choose 2 days ago accepting that I'll loose 2 days work.  It takes around 2 hours to re-install but brings back the system back to 'normal'.

I make a few critical changes to spreadsheets and request 'Time Machine' to backup. It refuses. I reasoned that it was still in use and 'restarted' the iMac. "Time Machine' now responds and does a long backup.

I note there is a report that this 'bar' may be caused by a peripheral but I have not followed the suggested work around.

OS X Mavericks :: Mac Not Going To Sleep?

Jun 27, 2014

I just deleted (again for the 4th time this week) the Address Book Source files (Linc's fix). Will post again later - hopefully will find a permanent fix for that, once the problem pops up again.

This is what remains when I type pmset -g assertions in Terminal after deleting the Address Book files. Even if nothing appears to prevent sleep, yet after 5min, laptop was not sleeping and took many times pressing 'Enter' and 2min of intense computer work to 'wake' from a 'not sleeping'-stuck state. I used to hit 'sleep' or close the lid, for years (!!!) and now it's a problem after another. Nothing is connected to USB. Bluetooth is off. But wireless is on. Even Time Machine is off.

Yesterday I booted in safe mode and restarted (again a fix provided by Linc - I was really hopeful it would reset some files and fix it for good!!!). I need to close this laptop, it goes to sleep within a second and I put it in my bag and go.

OS X Mavericks :: (10.9.4) New IMac Using Up All 8GB Of RAM?

Aug 31, 2014

I bought a brand new 27" iMac with 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5, and it's got 8GB of RAM. Although I haven't been experiencing any specific problems with it, I noticed that it was running almost slower than my Windows 7 Laptop. Confused, I downloaded an app that monitors and clears up RAM. It started off okay, telling me I was using around 3-4 GB just for doing simple things like surfing the web and generally exploring my new Mac.

However, it started warning me that I was nearly using up all 8 GB of RAM. I double checked with the Activity Monitor and it's also warning me I'm using up 6-7 GB of RAM.

I'm not running anything other than Chrome, I've downloaded Adobe CC and Photoshop CC, but neither of them have been opened let alone running. Urk, this is my first ever day using a Mac... and I know that it shouldn't be using up 8 GB of Ram on it's first day of use.

((I'm running OS X version 10.9.4 if that makes any difference))

OS X Mavericks :: Can't Boot Mac

Jun 30, 2014

I forgot my password so looked on YouTube how to go about this. I turned off the Mac. Restarted. Went to terminal. Typed: mount -uw...Then typed: rm/ var/db/.AppleSetupDone then I typed exit to exit the program. When turning the Macbook (Air mid-2013) back on, the chime then the screen turned on with the Apple logo, then it just turns off. Tried booting in safe mode, does the same thing. Tried pressing option key then clicking on recovery partition, tries to load and fails then Mac turns off again. I clicked cmd and R and it downloaded an Apple recovery thing, tried repairing the drives, and also tried installing a new OsX but it says a newer version is installed (the latest one).

I've clearly messed something up in the terminal and now it just simply wont turn on. Is there anyway to set the terminal back to its factory settings without being able to get on to the mac? I haven't got a backup.
