Intel Mac :: Can't Reformat Or Delete A Partition
Jul 2, 2012I have an early 2006 iMac with the notorious GPU issues so after replacing it with a new Mac Mini it's time to sell the iMac for parts. I'm trying to reformat the hard drive with no success - I boot off of the original Mac OS X 10.4.4 CD, launch Disk Utility, but whenever I try to erase the disk or delete the partition the program freezes. I've even tried using GParted Live! CD to delete the partition and the same thing happens - whenever I assess it, it locks GParted as well! Funny thing is, I can still boot off of the hard drive just fine.I should mention that the hard drive has 10.5.8 installed - perhaps there's an incompatibility between Disk Utility 10.4 and the installed OS?

Jan 20, 2009I recently partitioned my harddrive for windows xp to be installed with bootcamp but now I would rather run VMware fusion. I haven't yet backed up my hard drive. Is there anyway to return to previous settings without losing it all? I have a lot of stuff on my computer is why I ask. Also, if I made a backup of my computer now, will that not work because I am doing so with a partitioned drive?

Now my problem is that I have to sync my iPad to my new computer, without loosing any data that I have made I have spent over a year using my iPad and would not be a happy camper if I lost my app data and music. Feb 8, 2009So I have an external firewire drive I use for all my Time Machine backups in OS X. It's formatted in the typical Mac journaled format or whatever it is. I have 2 partitions, one with my Time Machine backup. I booted in Windows 7, and intended to reformat the other partition to work with Windows, but it didn't want to let me change that partition, though it did recognize it as an OS X format.

Jun 13, 2012I have a 27 inch, mid 2011 imac. I bought it in March. It has started losing its wireless connection. The other issue is when it does connect it is very slow. I have a netgear modem, I dont think this is the issue cause the IPAD, and wireless laptop connect fine. I've also run a speed test, all wireless devices connect to 10Mbps and LAN devices connect up to 30 Mbps including the iMac when it is wired. Could this be an issue with the airport card? How would I know, how do I check? What should I do?

May 29, 2012starting last week, randomly all the files will be gone. all applications installed will still be there, but every file the user has ever created will disappear completely. We have Crashplan running backup constantly, so we are able to restore the files, but a few days later, all the files will be gone again and we have to restore again. by gone I mean completely gone. search for any file and it doesn't exist. eerything on the desktop or in any folders (the folders are gone too.) all the programs will be there and be unable to find any recent saves.

Apr 25, 2012I am a Photographer and so I have many RAW files on my Mac. I use Aperture to edit, but in the last few days when I am editing a picture (zoomed in, skin smoothing or retouching) App will just close, the only warning being the coloured spinning ball. Last night my whole computer just switched off whilst I was in the middle of editing, and this morning the screen went dark and an instruction came up to turn off the computer by holding the power button, and restart.
I've checked my RAM and there seems to be plenty. It was just an issue exclusively to Aperture, but now I seem to be experiencing the spinning coloured ball when trying to use Safari. So there is something missing. I was wondering if it just may be Aperture, in which case I was going to export all the projects to the desktop and then uninstall and reinstall the software.

Sep 8, 2006So i put the OSX disk in (10.3) and when i make it boot from the disk the mac logo pops up then it shifts a quarter inch to the right and freezes. I then tried booting it normally and pressed the install button now it boots off the CD automatically with the same result and can't be turned off. Apr 6, 2012I installed windows through bootcamp and partitioned my hard drive to about a 300Gb/600Gb windows and mac respectively. After a while i decided to remove the windows partition. As I was repartitioning the Hard Drive through disk utility my mac froze and went to a gray screen so I restarted it. Disk utility says that the process finished however it does not recognise the 300Gb I used for windows. i.e. Disk utility says there is one partition, and that the total capacity is about 1Tb.
However the spaced used and space available adds up to 600Gb, its like the mac thinks that it is repartitoned to just 1, but not allowing me to acces that 300Gb. so my question is how do i completely strip back the hard drive to basic factory settings (iv backed up all my data to an external drive) so I can reinstall the mac operating system and repair the drive to make use of its full capacity, then re install from my backed up external drive.

Jun 29, 2012I purchased an external hard drive ( a Seagate 2 TB Expansion Desktop Drive) and was told by the MAC rep in the store to perform the following simple task to reformat the disk so I could drag and drop files from my iMAC and store them on the external hard drive:
1. Go to Disk Utility
2. Choose the External Hard Drive
3. Select Erase
4. Select MAC OS Extended (Journaled)
5. Click on Erase button
Unfortunately when I do this, I get the following error: Disk erase Failed with Error: File system formatter failed? I have Mac OS X (10.5.8)...
