OS X Mavericks :: Underscore In Filename Prevents Searching In Finder?
Dec 10, 2014
I've recently discovered that while searching in Finder I am not getting any results of files that have underscores in their file names. For example, a photographer sent over hundreds of files that are named "IMG_1234.jpg." When I search in that folder for any files named "34", I get no results, even though I can see the file is right there. Files with names like "AC-1234.jpg" are fine and come up in the results right away.
What gives with the underscore? Is this a Mavericks thing? I've never had this issue before with Finder. Is there a setting I can change to include these file names in my search results?
I'd like to copy the filename and the date created (basically, whatever my Finder's List View shows, which is minimal) so that I can paste it into a plain text document. Is there an easy way to do this without a script? As it stands, when I copy and paste to the text document, I just get the filename with its extension.
I've read the other posts about this issue, but have not found a thread addressing automatic resizing a Finder column width to the longest filename. Is there a trick to configure Finder to do this? So far it looks like only a manual double-click of the column handle will accomplish this.
I just tried to save a file with a rather long name. I got an error message that said I could not use filenames longer than 31 characters, I seem to remember that before I got this computer (iMac 21.5"), I used to have longer filenames than 31 characters! Is my memory faulty or is the operating system, "Mavericks" 10.9.3 deficient in this area, also?
I had always been able to click on my remote server under devices and search for folders and files but now I don't get anything, not even the spinning status. However the Finder works for all other devices but just not my remote server anymore. What happened, how can I get it back on track?
When I do a search on the internet, find the link or page I want to go to, once I get to the page, it goes away and a yahoo search page comes up.I search hulu, find a movie I want to watch, start to up load and BOOM I get redirected to the yahoo junk. This is the link I keep getting sent to: URL....I use FireFox. It does not appear to happen on Safari.
I recently got a new iMac and backed up from Time Machine. Everything is fine apart from Apple Mail, which no longer searches my Gmail archive. The archive is still there, all 33,000 messages, but just not searchable.
So, for example, if I got an email from a guy called George a month ago, when I search 'George' nothing comes up. I can manually go to the Archive and find the email but obviously that takes a lot of time.
Is this an Apple issue or a Gmail issue? Given that I run the same account on my laptop and it's all working fine, plus it was working fine before, I would assume it;s an Apple fault.
When I search for a file in my computer (command + f) the results appear in a window. If I click on a FILE among the results, the detailed location of that file is shown at the bottom of the window. If I click on a FOLDER, however, no such location information appears. Before Mavericks, locations of folders was also given. Is this a Mavericks bug? Can it be fixed?
I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

I watched the live stream of the back to mac event earlier today just got home now.. What are your thoughts of the new Mac App Store? Think it'll prevent piracy or will there still be a way to download software?
I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my 2007 iMac, and so far everything is running flawlessly EXCEPT that every time I boot in to Windows I am greeted with a flashing underscore for about 55 seconds before the boot process continues. Has anyone any idea what the cause and solution to this little irritating problem might be? I used the drivers included on the SL DVD in case anyone is wondering. Here is a short video clip showing the whole boot process: [URL]
Is there any way to go about dealing with an application that has frozen (or results in the spinning of the 'beachball of death')...and then to top things off, decides to prevent you from force-quitting it as well!! Not being able to force-quit a stuck App is a major problem, because it means that I can then not log-out, restart or shutdown my computer...inevitably, my only option is to hold down the power button on my machine to force-shutdown!
I have three Macs and one PC. The WDTV has no problems accessing the Mac and PC that does not have Vuze installed. However, it can not access my Macbook Pro where Vuze is installed. I've talked to support teams at both Western Digital and Apple, and they said that everything was correct set-up at my end.
I'm suspecting that Vuze because:
Vuze clearly has affected how the Macbook Pro broadcast itself on my network. The PC, with Windows 7, sees the Macbook Pro as "Vuze on Vuze", not as "MacBook Pro", which is the name I have given the computer. The Macs sees it correctly as "Macbook Pro". Also, the WDTV sees the Macbook Pro as "VUZE", but when I try to connect, it says "The Media Server can not be accessed". I'm using the "Network Shares" feature on the WDTV and not the "Media Server" feature. I have also turned off the "UPnP" plugin under Media Servers in Vuze Preferences, but it didn't make a difference. Also, my Macbook Pro has three partitions with 10.6.2 installed. On the only partition that does not have Vuze installed, the WDTV can access it. So clearly something is up with Vuze.

I recently attempted to install the most recent firmware and security updates for mac os x 10.5.8 on my macbook pro 17 inch (purchased about 14 months ago). Computer asked me to reboot, i did, it then gave me instructions for firmware updates.
The screen went dark, and it did its thing, and I returned 10 minutes later. The computer had not rebooted.I pressed the startup key and it gave a long beep. Screen remained dark. Some minutes later it ran the boot cycle, but booted into windows (i have dual boot set up). I can only get into windows now.
I've now properly installed Windows 7 to my MacBook, but now I'm getting this problem and can't find a fix. Basically, I turn my MacBook on, select Windows, and it leaves me at a black screen with a flashing underscore for 45 seconds before it actually begins to do anything (making boot times unbarably slow). This is seriously annoying me, but it doesn't seem to have a fix. Edit: Oh, some details. Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit), MacBook Pro 13" (2009), Snow Leopard installed, using rEFIt to multi-boot, bootcamp 3.0, and have never had this problem with any other version of Windows.
I was going to download windows XP using bootcamp and I did everything up to the point to the point where you choose FAT or NTSF. Well the only thing there was NTSF so I decided to cancel it. It said it was going to reboot so I waited and it restarted. I ejected the disk and now the screen is black and theres a white underscore flashing. I restarted it and its still not workingand the screen is still black. How do I fix it? I already tried the ctr+option+p+r thing wiht no luck. Do I have to reinstall OSX again?
I am running OSX 10.5.8. A little while ago I successfully Boot-Camped my hard drive and installed Windows 7, but i recently got a new hard drive. I copied over my OSX partition successfully, but didn't copy over the Windows partition. On my new drive I went through the boot camp assistant and created a partition and inserted the Windows 7 disc. But when it restarts, it just seems to hang there- it's just a black screen with a blinking white underscore(_).
I have been told that because I copied over my OSX partition it didn't set up the MBR on the new disk, is their any way to fix this? (besides doing a clean install of OSX) Are there any software or guides available to help me fix this?
I tried to install Windows 7 via Bootcamp a couple weeks back, but shortly after it failed, I deleted the Bootcamp partition in Bootcamp Assistant. However, whenever I want to boot my computer, it tries to go into the Windows Installation, but it gets stuck on the flashing underscore on the top left of the black screen. Henceforth, whenever I want to boot into OSX, I have to hold down both ALT keys. is there any way of fixing this so the iMac boots STRAIGHT into OSX (like normally)
I freshly installed mac osx leopard on my aluminium iMac 24" I updated to 10.5.8 the latest. I made an bootcamp disk of 80gig. But all the time when i try to install windows i only get a black screen with flashing underscore. i've tried, windows xp home english, windows xp home dutch, windows xp professional sp3 the first to are sp2. And i know my windows xp home english works because i've used many times before to install windows on my mac using bootcamp. What could i be doing wrong? ive resetted the disk permissions (i have no idea how it's called in english)
Hi y'all: i just purchased FCP Studio 5 retail (ouch) and installed it, but not before i had a deal fall through with someone who had "sold" me their copy but then rescinded the deal. So, i have my own copy now, but i have THEIR license key registration - i need to enter mine, but throwing the apps away doesn't delete this info; it's stored somewhere else.
can anyone point me to the correct file for deletion, so that when i relaunch any of the studio apps, i will be prompted for (correct) license key information?
I imported some movies into itunes library. But the names of those movies are disordered and confused, so i try rename them to make the style clean.
Since there are a lot of them, i write some python code to do the work. I rename them directly from the source directory which is in iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies. But when I open itunes, the names are not changed. Then I try to use organize library option those names in the source file are changed back to old names.
After that, I move all those movies to other directory, and delete them in itunes. I try to rename those movies in that directory, and then import them to itunes. Surprisingly, when importing to itunes, they all changed to old names! I don't know why itunes still remember them.
For some reason when I go to save a jpg that I've received by email for example, the finder window opens and tells me I need to use the extension jpeg?! But it does offer me this....You can choose to use both, so that your file name ends in “.jpg.jpeg”. Now this is new as I've never had a problem with this before. how I stop it?!
am primarily on macs, but i have bootcamp on my main computer and I need to make sure my working files are completely windows compatible... that includes their file names...!
Is there a program that i can use that will scan a bunch of files, bring up file names that are not compatible with windows xp pro, and give me the opportunity to change them?
