OS X Mavericks :: Keep WiFi Active With Screen Lock?
Jun 20, 2014
I've been running across a bit of a problem with Mavericks of late. Just re-installed it on my MBP too! Â
If I choose Login Window or let the screen turn off/lock, the wifi disconnects while on AC power. Â
I really don't want that to happen as I sometimes need to connect to it remotely to check on the status of a photoshop process, data transfer, etc.Â

If I'm not at home I would like the MBP to lock the screen after 15 mins, but not while I'm home. So if my home-wifi isn't detected I would like the "lock screen" to be enabled. Is this possible?

My Wi-Fi drops out all the time and I have to reset the WiFi to reconnect. When I look in the signal bar is says it is still connected, this will happen about once every 2 to 3 minutes. I have contacted the apple help desk and was told it must be my modem. I have two phones, an ipad, 2 windows laptops and my macbook pro is the only one that has problems with the WiFi. have also taken it to a repair agent and was told it was my modem.

My Linksys WRT610N with the latest firmware worked fantastically on multiple Windows 7-based ThinkPad. However, three (3) different iMac's have had the very same problem of dropping the connection and of my having to powercycle both my cable modem and the W610 router for it to work again at all! Once it drops the active connection, that's it. I have tried a few different settings and nothing has made a difference.
Can you maybe help point me in the right direction or should I just ditch it for an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule? One additional point: It works worst in the 5GHz frequency band, even though there are none in my neighborhood, and if there are, they have their SSID's (network name) hidden. The 2.4GHz band is extremely crowded where I am which makes it difficult to enjoy my WiFi connection.

It seems that Outlook 2011 Reminders switch the active screen (when using multiple spaces in OSX which I always do) when they pop. This seems to happen whether I have the reminders set to appear on all desktops or just the first desktop. This is hugely annoying when I am in a fullscreen app (e.g. parallels) and suddenly I'm warped over to the first screen again. I'm talking about spaces functionality in OSX, not multiple monitors. This feature. I just updated the OS to 10.9.4, and in the ~6 hours since doing so, my computer has locked up twice. Right in the middle of doing a task, all response ceases except for mouse movement. Three-finger salute is ineffective, and the only solution is the power button.Â
Is it possible to roll back to 10.9.3?Â

My cap lock is reversed. PRAM reset was of no use. Restart was useless. also reinstalling maverick was useless. what can it be? if I disable the caps lock from the keyboard preferences, the led turns on, meaning that for my mac the lower case is set when the led is on.

This has just started happening a few days ago. I think it has something to do with bluetooth. Every time I have to restart my iMac, the mouse and keyboard freeze. I work around this by unplugging the mouse from the keyboard and plugging it into one of the usb ports on the back of the imac. I used to have a wireless keyboard and mouse and I'm typing on it now because the regular wired keyboard no longer seems to work at all now. I think the bluetooth setting sin system preferences which are all checked, may have something to do with this but not sure. Everything else on the machijne is fine. How can I set things so that I can use my wired keyboard?

I have a first gen Mac pro, I am getting a sporadic lock up where the screen freezes, and it stops responding to keyboard and mouse input (and it becomes inaccessible from the network). This has happened in normal use twice.
I have tried several times to run the Apple Hardware Test off the original Os X disk, but it locks up up every time in that mode. It also locks up immediately when I boot into single user mode (which I did in order to attempt to run memtest). At least it refuses keyboard input in Single User (with my normal bluetooth keyboard, as well as a USB keyboard that I borrowed).
I did run memtest from a terminal window while logged in normally, and it was able to access 11 of my 12 gigs of RAM, and it passed, so I guess I am 11/12ths sure it is not bad RAM.
When the system does lock up, when I do a hard power cycle with the button on the front of the machine, it will not reboot -- my screen remains black. If I let it sit for a minute or two like that, then power cycle again, it does boot up normally. This is very consistent on these lockups - no boot the first time, works fine the second.
In general, I think it is running hotter than it used to -- at least it seems like the fans are running at high speed more than they used to, but I can't swear to, or quantify that.
I was on the phone with Apple tech support for about an hour yesterday, and he finally decided it had to be taken in for service.
I wanted to see if anybody here has any ideas what the problem might be, especially if it is something I could fix myself, before I lose the machine for however long it will take Apple to fix it.

Does OSX has a keyboard shortcut as linux (CTRL ALT L) to lock the screen? Unfortunately, OSX doesn't require password to return after a display sleep. It only requests password after sleep. I need a keyboard shortcut to solve this problem or a screensaver with sleep display function.

I have an iMac 20'' running Snow Leopard and I want to keep my screen on (to be more specifically, I need to keep it on with a photo on it, always) but when someone moves the mouse or press a key I don't want them to access my computer without entering my password. (like a transparent screen lock app) I think you got the idea, can you recommend me a software that does this?

I lock the screen & sleep the system when I go out (Sys prefs > Security & privacy > require password immediately after sleep or screen saver) -- get back and click to wake .. From that moment the keyboard (and sometimes the mouse too) responds very very slowly - takes about 30 secs even to enter my password to login. What happens next varies. Sometimes the keyboard recovers in a matter of seconds and returns to normal function. Other times it actually gets worse and might even get to the point where I can't even select menu items with the mouse. In the latter case restarting the system fixes it.

I have a new Mini, 2.0ghz, 4gb Mushkin RAM upgrade. When I try to stream video from YouTube at fullscreen on my 22" display it will play fine for about 10-15 seconds but will then lock up. If I do command option esc. for a Force quit, the video kicks back out of fullscreen to a regular web browser, and immediately continues from where it locked up just fine. This happens in both FF and Safari. Reboot does not solve the issue.

I got a mid-2011 Macbook Pro (OS X 10.7.3) and I have never set a firmware password for it, and now, out of the blue, when I boot using option I get a grey screen with a lockpad and a password field, I typed every password I can think of and none of the are correct. I have never set a firmware password, I would remember that, maybe it's a new malware?
Tried everything to boot to a different state but it would rather boot normally to OS X or I would get that grey lock. I can boot to DVD by choosing the DVD in the Start Up disk option, but it's useless, since I need the old password to turn off or change the firmware password. It will go to a grey screen with the lock if Option key is pressed during boot, so, that's useless too...no need to say cmd-opt-o-f is useless. Is there any other way?

Apple revealed a minor tweak to the iPad hardware when preorders began Friday morning, with a button previously designated for audio muting changed to a "screen rotation lock." As first noticed by Jim Dalrymple at The Loop, the switch, located just above the volume controls on the right side of the device, is now devoted to locking the screen orientation in its current state. Previously, the switch was used to mute the iPad. One of the features Apple has touted with the iPad is that it can be used from any orientation the user sees fit. The new feature will prevent users from having the screen rotate unexpectedly as they use the device while browsing the Web, reading an e-book, or accomplishing any other task on the 9.7-inch screen. "There isn't even a single orientation," Jony Ive, senior vice president of design with Apple, said in the iPad's initial promotional video. "There's no up, there's no down, there's no right or wrong way of holding it. I don't have to change myself to fit the product. It fits me."
Like with the iPhone and iPod touch, the internal accelerometer of the iPad automatically adjusts the display to fit the orientation by which the user is holding the device. The iPad allows even more functionality than with the previous products, granting users the ability to turn the iPad completely upside down, with the home button up top, if they so choose. Because the iPad has a focus on reading e-books and newspapers, many users will undoubtedly use the device as they would a physical book or newspaper -- objects that are sometimes read by users laying on their side. The screen rotation lock would prevent the device from shifting as a user moves around. Additional physical inputs on the device are the on/off and sleep/wake button, volume up/down controls, and the home button. Apple began accepting preorders for the iPad Friday morning. Purchases for the device, scheduled to ship April 3 for the WiFi-only model, are limited to two per customer. [View this article at AppleInsider.com]

So ever since I updated my late 2011 to Mavericks (10.9.3) I can't connect to wifi. I have tried lots of different "solutions" and none seem to work. I have tried from Renewing DHCP lease to resetting my router. Resetting my router worked for about and hour and after my computer went to sleep it stopped working. there is nothing wrong with my wifi and can connect to my wifi on other devices. Even another iMac that isn't running mavericks.
