I want to prevent ".DS_Store" file creation.Â
How can i do this?Â
How do I check the real date of file creation in Mac OS X.
All files, I receive (mail, ...) have the created date, when I copied them in their respective folder.
I can't seem to find a way to alter the creation date of a file. I have a project and mid-way through I copied everything into a new file to test something out. It's in a different format so it's impossible to simply port it back to the original file.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having a wierd problem with my macbook (os x leopard). It seems like all information about when the file was created / modified is set to a certain time, 19:08. Every file on the computer says this time (the date is correct), even newly creted files and systemfiles. This creates some problem with itunes (newly added songs will not appear until that time in smart playlists etc) and apps like evernote.Does anyone got an idea what this might be?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have files with no creation date or creation date 1969, etc (came from bad settings in camera).
Since I knew the date, I was able to easily fix it via touch:
touch -t 20090110 IMG_1023.JPGÂ
This used to set creation, modification, and access time to 20090111, in Snow Leopard.  However, I can no longer do this in Lion. It does set modification and access, but creation date is still screwed up.Â

My question is how to handle the difference in creation date between the paper document and the scanned file. The paper files are from the past 50 years, but of course the file creation date of the scans is the date of the scan. How can I reconcile this? Ideally I would like to make the scan metadata creation date of the PDF/A the same as that of the original paper file creation date.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn tiger you could easily disable safe sleep and remove the sleep image file but in Leopard this seems to have changed. Yes you can disable safe sleep & remove sleep image files but only temporarily. As soon as you restart or change energy settings back to default, leopard automatically reverts the safe sleep settings to default and starts creating an image file again
Is there no way to permanently disable/remove these?
This may be a silly question but when I have multiple finder windows open and I switch from one to the other then single click on a file, it opens the file.
This is really bugging me as I only want to select the file (to move it etc). Is there any way to prevent single click file opening?
I am new to the Mac OS system and am facing a difficulty.I want to keep my macbook running through the night downloading the updates, however I want the display to be off. For this I have used apps like caffeine and no sleep and have also modified the system preferences. But still whenever I turn off my display, after some time the macbook goes to sleep and all my downloads and updates are paused.Â
Is there any workaround which allows me to turn off the display without letting the mac to go to sleep ??

I'm not very fond of using the integrated mail app in mavericks. However I love how I am able to compose a message simply by clicking someones email on a website. But my question is, how can I turn off incoming messages from being stored in my mailbox? I would like the app to function where there are no incoming messages or junk in the mail app. The version is a 7.3 and my mac is running on mavericks 10.9.3
View 1 Replies View RelatedI know that Mavericks is very aggressive when it comes to saving power,To transfer files from an old win7 laptop to a brand new MacBook Air, I set up file sharing on the MBA, and shared a folder over SMB. I then proceed to log on from the win7 machine, and start copying files, but as soon as the MBA's display dims (at which time I assume Mavericks sleeps) the file transfer is halted. Other than permanently setting the MBA to "always awake", is there a way of preventing it from sleeping when external file transfers are taking place?Â

I have given up on getting home sharing to work properly amongst all my various computers at home on 10.5 and thought I would use an old style brute force method of simply setting up a file share to share my iTunes library. I set up file sharing to use the Guest account and it works fine for all of my other content. I have tried to create shares of the following directories and can only connect as a registered user (Guest user cannot even see these shares):
/Users/<name>/Music
/Users/<name>/Music/iTunes
I have gone into the terminal and looked at the ACLs on the Music directory (e.g ls -alte) and I can't see anything that would block access, but I am not an expert with this type of ACL. The ACL on the Music directory is this:
0: group:com.apple.sharepoint.group.2 allow search
1: group:everyone deny delete
I have an ACL called 0: group:everyone deny delete on one of my other shares that works fine so this can't be the culprit (more importantly the ACL looks like it is just preventing users from deleting anything).

I understand why "Open With" includes both old and new versions of updated apps. Fine. But how do I CLEAR the list and prevent this from continuing? (I'd expect it to offer a "Clear List" option at the bottom. It doesn't.)

I need to copy a set of email addresses and paste them into a spreadsheet for uploading. Using Mail's copy function I get the result "mailto: (address)". If I just copy that as an address Mail doesn't recognize it as a valid address. Is there a way around this?

I keep getting this same error message regardless if I go through the check available downloads etc or just try to restart the download.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.Â
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.Â

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I convert a MS Word document (MS Word 2004 for Mac) to a PDF document, using Adobe Acrobat (v. 8 for Mac), the hyperlinks that were inserted into the Word document are not present in the PDF document (hyperlink text is present, but it is not clickable or colored/underlined as it was in orig. Word document).
Please inform me of any setting in Acrobat or Word that I may need to change to get the hyperlinks to carry over properly during conversion.
I really don't want to go through all of my PDFs that I have created and re-insert hyperlinks manually, as there are TONS of them..!
I want Safari to stop being a complete whack-a-mole spaz and ALWAYS open in the same place EVERY time I open the application. Is there a way to change the permissions of the .DS_Store file so that it can NEVER be edited, without wreaking havoc on the system? If I quit Safari with a download window open it opens my window in a funky size and in a different location which parses me off more than Fergie's man-itude.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI use a few really useful applications on my desktop Mac, for example Firebox (encrypted database for passwords), CheckBook (to manage my bank account) and Bento (to store information in a flat database format). As the information is important to me, I would like to have offsite backups, in case my Mac and local external backup drives get stolen or my house burns down.I used to be able to do this by simply dragging these files to my iDisk.I have installed the iWork apps on my Mac but it is the files created by non-iWorks apps that I want to be able to backup off site. Can I still do this on the iCloud service or have Apple completely removed this facility, previously available on iDisk?
If Apple no longer provide this, it is likely they will in the future?
If Apple are no longer providing this, what is the best alternative?

Using the Finder in 10.5.8, pressing Cmd-F to get to the Search window. I want to look for jpeg files created during December of 2008. I first specify file type = image, press the + to add another constraint, choose "creation date before" . . . today's date comes up by default, with little up/down arrows at the right to allow changes. Well, the arrows do nothing, and I can't edit the date string directly. The only change I'm able to make is when holding down the Alt key, which allows me to use the little up/down arrows to cycle through the months (but not days or years).

- You take some screenshots of various stages of using the software

I'm about to sell an older Mac, and my buyer asked if I could install Snow Leopard and iLife for him, as well as update the machine. Of course it's easy to do this, but this will leave him with a user account he didn't configure himself. I was wondering how to update the mac and install the software and then reset it so that when he first boots it up he does get the intro movie and the user creation process? I found this guide, but it's referring to iBooks so it's pretty old, can anybody confirm it still works for Snow Leopard? [URL]
