OS X Mavericks :: After Install Takes Longer Time To Start Up Mac

Jun 23, 2014

Two days ago i installed Mavericks on my MacBook Pro and since i did it, my mac runs very slowly. The pointer goes slowly and it takes a lot of time to load the programs (safari, word, etc.). It takes also longer time to start up my mac. I've checked on the activity monitor and the system activity amount is so high, around 80%. But what i've discovered is that when i plug in the charger, my mac suddenly runs faster and i've checked again the system activity is only around 1-2%. How can i make my mac runs faster even when i don't plug in the charger?

Mac Pro :: It Takes Long Time To Start Up

Mar 30, 2012

My Mac Pro takes two minutes to start up.  It is also sluggish during normal operation.  I have Parallels and a external hard drive installed. Do either of these contribute to this problem? Or is there a program that can be used to defrag the hard drive. (I recall having similar problems with my IBM computer.  When it was defragged the performance of the unit improved).

OS X Mavericks :: MBP Takes Long Time To Connect To Internet When In One Room (not Others)

Sep 3, 2014

My brand new MBP is taking ages to connect to the internet when in the living room but not in the study (where the router is).

Two things are odd about this:

1.  It IS connected to wifi, i.e. all the bars of the wifi symbol are black, indicating a strong signal.  The problem is that, using Chrome (and Safari), when I enter a web address, it just hangs for ages then eventually, sometimes after 5-10 minutes, it connects, and thereafter things tend to be fine.

2.  My very old Dell laptop connects MUCH more quickly; I simply don't have the same problem with it.  It seems to not only find the wifi signal but to access websites more or less immediately.

On the one hand, given this only happens when in the living room, some distance from the router, I would think the problem is simply that the wifi signal is too weak.

Intel Mac :: Start Up Takes 2:15 Minutes To Start Up

OS X Mavericks :: Downloaded 10.9.4 - install Not Allowed On Mac HD To Start Up

I've downloaded Maverick 10.9.4 to upgrade from Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Download is OK, but when asked which drive I wanted to install the upgrade on, and I choose the internal Mac HD, it tells me I can't use that drive for startup, and won't let me continue.  Why not?  Been doing it for years with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on MackBook Pro 17". What now?

OS X Mavericks :: Restore From Time Machine After Clean Install

Jun 1, 2014

I decided to do a clean install of Mavericks to get rid of all the very old files hiding in my system folders.  I made a start-up disk following online instructions, rebooted from the USB drive and wiped the drive and reinstalled Mavericks.  Then I plugged in my Time machine backup drive and tried to recover particular folders from the latest backup.  However, I am getting a permission error that prevents me from going into the old user folder from that backup.  It has a red circle/line icon on the folder.

IMac :: OSX Start Up - Blue Screen Takes Forever

Dec 16, 2010

-Got the iMac refurbished in mid-2010 (2009 iMac i5)
-Originally planned on mainly using Windows, so I partitioned the drive to 750gb for Windows and the rest for OSX

I eventually got fed-up with certain things about both Windows and certain limitations/glitches within Bootcamp itself and decided it was time to go OSX, and use the machine properly in all it's Apple glory.

I removed the 750gb of the Windows 7 partition, restoring the whole thing back to OSX. At this point, my computer seemed to be working fine still- OSX would boot up in about a minute or so, nothing that seemed out of the ordinary. After that, I still wanted a small partition with Windows 7; so I partitioned 100gb of my drive and proceeded to install Windows 7. During the Windows 7 installation, as had happened the first time I installed Windows 7 with Boot Camp, I got the "Black Screen" issue. If you are unfamiliar with the issue, see here:.......................

OS X Mavericks :: Spotlight Indexing Takes Too Long After Restart

Jun 19, 2014

I have a 2012 iMac with 2 partitions, one main partition running Mavericks and one smaller partition running Mountain Lion.  I normally do all my work in Mavericks, but sometimes I need to boot into Mountain Lion and do a few things.  When booting back into Mavericks it takes at least 30 minutes (if not more) for my Mac to get back to full speed.  I think it's primarily due to the spotlight indexing which goes on for 30 minutes or more after the restart.  In spotlight prefs I do have my Mountain Lion disk added to privacy so that it won't be indexed, but that doesn't appear to solve the problem. what exactly is it indexing after a reboot and why does it take so long.I would really like my Mac usable at normal speeds within a couple of minutes after a reboot at most.

OS X Mavericks :: App Folder Says It Takes Up 3x As Much Room Than Actual Apps Inside

Sep 2, 2014

I am planning on buying a new Mac this weekend and was trying to decide on a hard drive size. When I clicked "Get Info" on the Applications folder it said 31.7GB, but when I actually added up the amount of space of each app in the folder, it only came to 12.6GB. I even included the miscellaneous folders (some of which were a couple GBs in size). If I were to transfer to another computer, would it say my Apps take up a different amount of space?

OS X :: Resizing Windows In OS X Takes Time?

Sep 7, 2008

IMNSHO resizing windows only from the bottom right corner sucks big time. I'd like to be able to resize windows from any corner or side.

I'm wondering if there is a 3rd party solution to resizing windows in OS X? Any software that can do this?

I know this has been discussed many times here, but I couldn't find any solution. Let's not argue this time, if this is really needed. This is just something that I want. I'd be happy to pay few $, if that's the only way to get it, but free/open solutions are what I'd prefer.

OS X :: Mac Takes A Long Time Logging In

Aug 6, 2010

Basically I have a MacBook Pro which logs in fine when I'm at work but when I'm on my home network it takes like 5 minutes to authenticate. All appearances are that it's trying to reach my work network to authenticate. Short of disabling wireless or having it prompt for my home network password before joining wireless, is there any way that I can either shorten the timeout or have it bypass network authentication when I'm at home?

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Time Machine May Display 'Preparing' For A Longer Time

Jun 21, 2012

None of the issues discussed in the apple support page on this issue seem to apply to me (except one below regarding not completing the 'prepare for backup'). It still takes way too much time (a night is not enough) to prepare for time machine backup, even though there was a backup recently, and it is not a one-time event but a recurring problem, and there are no big changes to my files or disks. And of course because most days it does not complete the backup before I have to leave to work, the condition on 'not interrupting the backup' cannot be respected. This looks like plain poor design. The only thing that helps is to connect my laptop directly to the Time Machine by Ethernet but it is very inconvenient.

OS X :: MacBook Pro Takes Time To Show Up In Network

Jan 2, 2011

I have an i7 MBP with the latest updates for Leopard with VMWare and Windows 7 Home. When the MBP is started on the LAN by WiFi it is able to connect to the Internet immediately. However, when I try to connect or see the MBP from another Windows 7 Home computer on the same LAN, it takes approximately 6 to 7 minutes before it shows up in "Network" on the other computer. No "Refresh" will locate it before the time. When I start VMWare and Windows 7 loads, it shows up immediately in "Network".

OS X :: Since 10.6.3, Ssh W/x11 Forwarding Takes A Long Time To Connect?

Apr 12, 2010

I'm not sure if the OS upgrade to 10.6.3 is involved or not, but I've noticed that all of a sudden, ssh connections to my Linux box would take like 30 seconds before I'd get a prompt. I tried lots of different things to resolve the problem, but what finally worked was disabling "-Y", forwarding X11. Can anyone give any insight into this and help me resolve it so that I can forward X11 without the connection taking forever to establish?
