May 18, 2010Is there a way to setup mail not mark items as read when they are selected? I know in Windows with Outlook you have an option for something like that.

View 1 RepliesI have a problem in Mail that I can not seem to resolve which started some time after I started to used iCloud. I have been reading emails, which as they should become become unmarked once you have read them. Few hours later or next day or so, these same mails are marked again and then I will start reading them again finding out these are old mails. very frustrating and counterproductive. I use iCloud and I use organized mail boxes organized according to programs for instance in my mac account which are synced across devices through iCLoud. The problem only shows in these custom mailboxes not in the IMAP account boxes in which mails would arrive initally without the sorting rules I use to transfer specific mails to the mailboxes in Mac account folder

I have 4 mail boxes configured in to my Mac Mail. The problem is, in one mail box, when i receive emails to that mailbox, the messages are already marked as Read. It's configured as IMAP.

Wondering if anyone else was having any weird issues with their iCloud and unread count in the Mail app on their mac running lion? I can't seem to get rid of a phantom unread message. My iCloud account is fairly new so I don't have that many messages to go through so I know there is not an unread message any where.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use my gmail account through the mail application, however it is marking all my emails, even ones from when I first made my account, as unread is there a way to sync it so it can tell when I have read an email on gmail.com and mark it as unread? Also is there a way to synch the various labels that I have created on gmail?

I just switched from Snow leopard to Lion and i don't like the way that Lion has the mail preview set up as a 3 column vertical format. I thought in Snow Leopard you could change the set-up so it's either horizontal or vertical, but I can't seem to find that option in Lion. I want to have the list of my email messages in the top, horizontal window and the preview of the selected message in a horizontal window below. Am I missing this option to change the view format from vertical to horizontal somewhere?

On my iPhone and iPad mail app, which is sourcing from my Gmail, 'read' mail is changed to read mail (from unread) status on across iPad and iPhone mail application platforms. But not for IMac using Lion.
View 4 Replies View RelatedFor the past few months my mail program has constantly said that I have two unread messages in it. I have gone through every folder on there and selected all the messages and marked them as Read but there is still a "2" on the icon in the Dock. It's not a huge deal but it's been kind of bugging me since it seems like it should be a simple fix. Anyone have any ideas for how I can get rid of this? Is there a "Master" way to to mark all messages read in the Mail program, in case I'm missing some somewhere? I'm not sure if this helps but the email account that it says the "2 unread messages" are in is a school Outlook account. I have tried deleting the account and readding it and the same "2 unread messages" notification is still there.

I don't know if this began with Lion or are some update. It is clearly related to Mail group messages by 'conversation'. Normally, if I select a message either with the mouse or by mvoing up or down the inbox with the cursor keys, the message I move to gets marked as read (it looses it unread mark). However, when a message is put into a group of related message by Mail, this often but not always does not happen. In some cases, moving to the message, to the next message, and back again will get it marked read. But in other cases, I need to expan the group with the nbr> mark and then select any member messages to get them marked read.
If the unmarked member messages were below the most recent message I might be annoyed but I could grasp what is happening. However, in most every case, the most recent message is marked as unread and I need to select is directly and then leave it to get the group marked as read. This slows down browsing through the messages I receive which include a lot which are of no interest to me most of the time (if always of no interest I could get them stopped). So I like to be able to select the oldest unread message and then use the cursor keys to move up the list one at a time and if I'm not interested in a message I just keep going, otherwise I stop and process it.

How can I get the mail headers to "gray" out or be colored when they've been read? Right now, ALL messages in the list are bold black. Once I read an email, it still shows bold and black. I need some sort of identification to show what is NEW and what HAS BEEN READ. Â
I've been using Outlook, which grays out read messages. Â
I have a couple of niggles with the Mail app. They're nothing I can't live with but even so. First all the emails I send out get marked as junk. Secondly I have a couple of accounts set up and one is for my work emails. I have set a signature for these with my company logo but every time I write a new mail and set it to come from my work address the signature isn't there. If I go back into preferences and set the signature to the account all is fine, but I have to do this before every email I send.

In the App store, OS X Lion is marked download and greyed out instead of installed. Is this an issue? Lion seems to be working well. Is there something I have done wrong?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a signature set up in Apple Mail with an image. When I send an email to a PC user, they do not see my signature in the body of the email. The signature is viewed as an attachment. Is there anyway to resolve this in Apple Mail? I know if I set the signature to plain txt instead of rtf this works, but then I can't have a fancy image signature. If I move across to Entourage, will this solve it? Is it a limitation on Apple Mail's side?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have set up my email account in Entourage and in Mac Mail. It is a Rackspace email account. I can retrieve messages from my email account in both programs. When I read a message in Mac Mail, it immediately disappears after I close the message. The messages remain in my Entourage inbox. In other words, after they are read, POOF! it's as if they never existed in Mac Mail. Â
Is there a setting I am missing? why this would happen in Mac Mail but not Entourage?Â

I have my macbook, iphone, and (new) imac all setup as icloud accounts for email. All email is coming through just fine on each device. However on the new imac messages which have been "read" on the iphone or on the macbook are still showing up as unread in mail on the imac.

Just in the last day or so ive noticed that i'm unable to read certain emails. Headings and script appear as a series of A's. I've tried viewing them in different formats (view>message...) , text encoding and even rebuild. None of which has worked. I suspect i would need to re install the Mail app? Would this have anything to do with a recent installation of Microsoft Office?

It was under my understanding that on a laptop Lion will continue to take snaphots even when it is disconnected from the drive it uses to store time machine backups. However I have a message back up failed, when I opened the time machine preferences I see this;
So I went in to the options to see what items are being excluded from the backups and lone behold my local drive is marked as to be excluded. The problem is it is greyed out and I can't remove it.Â
Also, I don't know if this is related, but when I try to look enter time machine there is nothing present. The only time I can see my backups is by holding down the option key and selecting browse other backup disks. Is there a library file or something I can delete without loosing my past backup history?Â

In Keychain Access, My "Certificates" and "Keys", three out of the four root certificates are marked as: This root certificate is not trusted (in red) com.apple.ubiquity.peer-uuid- times two and one: com.apple.ubiquity.ssl - then five groups of numbers for each. Is this something that should concern me or is it something to do with the problems I am having, Mail - some addresses I use are not sync and have a warning sign! Are these certificates needed to be trusted for mail configuration?

I can't find a way to hide read messages in Mail. I'd like to be able to have only unread messages visible. Is this possible?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just tried to make the switch from Entourage to Mail, but there is a major bug in Mail's handling of rules that has sent me running back to Entourage.
Mail will NOT apply any rules to messages that appear in your inbox, if you've already read those messages on other devices, such as your iPhone.
If you?ve already read an email on another device (such as your iPhone), then Mail will NOT apply ANY incoming rules to that message when it shows up in your inbox. Every other email program on the planet that I know of ? including Entourage and Outlook ? ALWAYS applies rules to messages that appear in your inbox, whether or not you?ve read those messages on other devices.
I really wish that Apple would fix this bug.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to workaround this in the meantime?
I've got it set up so she can send/receive new emails, but I'm trying to figure out away to import all the old emails that she's already read? And maybe contacts too? Going back and entering them in one at a time would be kind of a pain.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been running all of my emails through my iPhone since it was released. Just recently I picked up a new Mac Mini as a work machine, and I set up Mail to handle all of the same accounts as my phone, with the thinking being that I can read and respond to messages when I'm at the computer, and when I step away, be able to read the remaining emails on my iPhone.
What my problem is, however, that both my Gmail and Hotmail accounts don't seem to "sync" properly between the phone and the computer, meaning that mail that I've read or deleted in Mail on the Mac Mini don't show up as being read or deleted on the iPhone, and vice versa.
I don't want to have to delete a message on my phone if I've already taken care of it in Mail.
