View 2 Replies I have my Mac Pro set up to boot at a certain time every morning using the energy saver schedule feature. I have also set a disk I've named "Lion HD" as my startup disk. I also have a disk named "Lion HD back up" which is an exact bootable clone created with "super duper". Every now & then the computer boots into the Lion backup rather than the Lion HD. Any ideas why this happens & what I can do to fix it?

I tried booting up my Mac Pro, and it boots into a blank blue screen. I tried this several times, but no dice. Cannot boot into safe mode either. This happened about a month ago, and I did another reinstall. When I booted into my Apple Mac OSX Snow Leopard disk to repair, and it said everything was repaired.
View 1 Replies View RelatedA few days ago my macbook froze, when I did a hard reboot it boots to bluescreen. I've even left it up overnight just in case it was talking awhile.
Here is what I've tried so far:
-boot into safemode, holding in shift does nothing.
-Tried to run disk utility, it said something like it couldn't be done (forgot the exact message)
-reinstall the OS from cd, but holding in c causes it to reboot.
-holding option and clicking the cd to boot from causes a reboot also
-command-option-shift-delete does nothing
-Gone into single user mode done the fsck thing, also tried this [URL]
Starting to think the HDD is shot. Just noticed an error when I type in /sbin/fsck -fy it says "Incorrect block count for file pcscd.pub it should be 16 instead of 17. Not sure if that means anything. Was able to run disk utility now, no errors were found however it still will only boot to blue screen.
Just about 2 hour ago I put my mac on standby because I had to do some homework, but after I finished my work and opened up my computer, the screen was black. I then resetted the computer by holding the power button down but still nothing.
The computer makes all the sounds like it normally does, it does the chime aswell. However, when I close the computer up the front light isn't pulsating, its just glowing. While my computer's screen is black I can adjust the sound (it makes the noises) and I can adjust the backlit keyboard brightness, but it doesnt respond to trying to light up the desktop. I've tried to shine a light to the desktop but can't see anything.
I've tried looking at some similar posts, tried to reset it up by holding cmd+opt+p+r.. nothing works. I can't understand this... it was working just fine only hours ago
EDIT: after leaving it for 10 minutes, the front light started pulsating as normal again, but when I open it up, black screen still.
It's a PowerBook G4, 15" model A1046, and this is what's going on.
Powers on, checks combo drive, gongs, no flickering or lighting on screen, period.
Tried a PRAM reset several times but it NEVER gongs a second time. I tried booting to Open Firmware and typing mac-boot, blind, but nothing. The keyboard clearly works, as the caps lock light works.
The hard drive spins up, the fans run at normal speeds, so everything else is clearly functional.
I did a search but I would like to know why occasionally my 1.8 single G5 fully updated 10.4 boots up to a grey screen with a prompt> message says
to either type mac-boot (does not work) or shut-down (does work)
It happened at any stage since I bought it (second user) years ago since panther 10.3.. It even happens after repair and verify is checked.
It gets a lot of use maybe 6 hours a day so am I about to meet thy doom?
I can usually press the power button and boots ok but recently 2-3 times
to get going
I am considering getting more ram and leopard and want to find out whats causing this issue first?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just go a new Macbook Pro 13' from my school (my school made it mandatory to get a mac this year) and I was installing some of my applications. Then I got the "You need to restart your computer" message. I restarted, and all i got was a blue screen with my pointer. Then after a while it says the same restart message. Also I have tried booting from the Snow Leopard Disk, but I get the same message before the actual SL installer comes up. I have been able to get the Macbook to boot in safe mode and I repaired permissions and the disk, however that does not seem to help. I have also reset the PRAM and that did nothing. I am running out of ideas... how can I fix this? I am using 10.6.4.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI left my laptop on in my room while I went to the bathroom, and when I came out, I saw the message that told me I must restart the computer. The message froze the computer, so I shut it off by holding the power button and tried to turn it back on again, but it only boots to a black screen. I don't hear the loud hard drive noise, but I hear the fans. Without AC power but with the charged battery, the computer shuts down after a few seconds. The light on the button that opens the lid is dim-to-none when the lid is open and bright when the lid is closed.
I tried many troubleshooting methods discussed on this site, like removing and reseating the RAM and draining the battery, along with the things that the Apple website suggested, like resetting the SMC and PRAM, but nothing works.
I brought the computer into an Apple Store, and after the NVIDIA test was negative, the technician told me that the problem is most likely the logic board. I also took the computer into an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and the technician there said it could be the logic board, hard drive, or boot connector. He also said that there is a very slight chance that the graphics card could have caused the logic board to fail. He tried my computer with another battery and concluded that it's not the battery's fault.
The Apple Store is charging me about $330 for a flat-rate repair. Should I troubleshoot further using suggestions you may have or pay Apple for repairs? If I decide to have Apple repair my laptop, do I need to take it back into the store to pay the repair charges, or can I do it over the phone and mail the computer to Apple?
I recently got a cheap used 12 1.33 PB, that has worked great for a couple of months.Yesterday the PB shut off totally while in sleep mode. I couldn't power it back up at first, but was able to after I reset the PMU, and plugged the power cord in. The computer worked fine after that for the rest of the day. This morning, I noticed the PB shut off again during sleep mode. But this time, I can no longer boot it up. The PB chimes, but then nothing comes onscreen, and there's no hard drive activity (so I'm pretty sure its not the screen.)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI restarted my mac this morning after the time was broken (as far as I know, I cannot manually change it). When it booted, it booted normally. It logged me in (I am automatically logged in) then it threw errors at me. The 2 errors were from Steam and Skype, but none from the mac itself. Steam error: " Steam failed to load: *SteamStartEngine(0xbfffdea4) failed with error 1: Failed create pipe: 28". I forgot to record the skype error, but it was something to do with it not being able to find a file. At this point, the background is blue, I can see the top bar but not the dock. I then close Steam and Skype windows and the bar disappears leaving me with nothing. A blank blue screen. The dock wont come up.
I would take this to support, but they want a serial code that i cannot access because its not on the hardware and I cant access 'About this Mac" because it disappears.

I'm running 10.6.8 and yesterday I noticed my ipod not connecting to my computer at all. So I did a software update and restarted my computer. I don't remember what the install was because I've done this procedure before. But this time my computer restarted but held on the grey apple icon spinning wheel screen. I had to power down after several minutes. I've booted up from an bootable archived system and ran diagnostics on the directory using Disc Utilities & Disk Warrior. Directories were fixed. When I choose the main startup hardrive, same thing occurs.

Tried everything from archive and install (wouldn't read disk2 until the 9th try and ended up with 9 system folders). Then tried an Erase and Install. Still it refuses to boot. Get's hung up at the blue screen. Will only boot in safe mode. Now for the last few days even the startup chime is missing. Tried PRAM and NVRAM resets. no help. Won't boot from DiskWarrior boot disk either. Just hangs

Suddenly yesterday when I powered mi iMac I had some horizontal green bars on the startup screen then it powered normally. But it happened two times, now every time I power on my iMac the screen stay black, and i can use my computer, everything else is working normally (i still can use Alfred to turn off my computer).
I already tried resetting the Command+Option+P+R, it didn't work. Also the Safe mode.
I have a mid-2011 27' iMac. EMC 2429.
I'm noticing some weird behavior in my Mac Pro first gen.
Basically, when I start it up, the displays just stays black for some time, until the Desktop loads up and the computer is functional, but never displays the gray screen with the Apple logo. This just happened all of a sudden and stayed like this.
I know is not a big deal now, but I'd like to sell it in the near future and this could be problematic for that.
So as the title explains, since last Friday I've been trying to figure out why my Macbook Pro started getting stuck on the boot screen with the spinning gear. Sometimes a progress bar appear and it fills like 1/20th of the way and goes back to the spinning gear. However, if I boot into Windows 7, it works fine. I tried using the Snow Leopard install disk to get into disk utility and it won't even boot from cd (For reference, I tried the hold-c command to boot into the cd). The I tried resetting the PRAM, the SMC reset and the fsk thing, no bananas. I have this Macbook Pro since June 2009. I'm shot of ideas, if you guys have no idea what's wrong its a call to Apple, or a meeting with a "Genius" ugh.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an iBook G4 which was working fine. A week ago my little sister used the laptop and now I have the following problem:
a) The laptop boots because I get the boot chime, but the screen keeps black.
b) I connected an external monitor to check if the problem was the laptop monitor. When I start the computer, I get a gray screen (in the external monitor), but no apple icon () and cannot pass from this gray screen.
c) I noticed that the caps lock light was not turning on, so I accessed the open firmware (keeping hold the power button - getting a weird chime and a light flashing near the case button - power chime ) and I got the open firmware screen (still in the external monitor) and I noticed that the keyboard was not working also! I connected an external keyboard (usb) and I am able to type.
I know I won't be able to use it as a normal computer because of this weird problem. I was thinking to keep it as a "desktop" with the external monitor and the external keyboard. My questions in this case are:
a) Is it there any way I can boot from cd from open firmware? (I cannot do the "keep the 'C' key hold during start up" because my laptop keyboard does not work.
b) Because I get the open firmware console, could this be a OS problem? What I mean is that if I reinstall the OS, could I at least keep using this computer as a desktop?
I am trying to install windows 7 on macbook air, through an external DVD drive, since USB didnt work for me. The DVD is detected and ounce I click start windows installation, the system boots and gets stuck at the gray boot screen with the apple logo. What is causing this? how can I solve this?

I have the new macbook unibody, and use it from time to time to dsiplay things to an external montior, plasma, projector, etc. Using a mini-display adapter to a converter to get s-video was a challenge, but I figured it out. I have used this many times, as I am a DJ and need s-video out to connect to most devices.I was at an event saturday night, and the display on the external device (projector) kept displaying my desktop, NOT the external feed.
It was NOT set up for mirroring, as it seems like the displays were 'switched'. I had my desktop on the projector, and my external on my macbook pro monitor. I tried to fool around with arrangement and resolution, but to no avail. I understand that sometimes you have to drag your source to the right (of left) to get it to display on the external, and this was done, but it was still reversed.I know it was something simple to get the 2 switched back to the way it should be, but I could not figure it out. Any advice? None of my apple buds can figure this out.
My LED screen has gone wrong, it's like it is showing in negative.getting it back to normal.

I was BBMing while trying to plug in my headphones with my pheripherals, and I accidentally pushed it (not very hard) into the USB port. The tip of the headphone jack connected with the little connector ball at the bottom of the USB port. The screen went black and I instantly hit the power button on instinct, so I don't know if it shut off. Did I do something very bad, or is that normal? I'm not sure if that's even considered an electric shock or what.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a white macbook that has been starting to act a little slow. I put avast on it and found some old files that were windows files received in emails that had never been deleted (i.e. so these weren't issues and so viruses were not the problem).
I did a repair disk permissions and it gave the usual long list of java changes. I did a verify disk, and it found errors. So I put the CD that came with the macbook into the drive in order to start from it and run disk utility.
The macbook will not boot from the cd. The drive is fine and the computer boots up fine using the HDD. I did try running the hardware test but it said the version is not compatible (maybe these aren't the disks that came with the macbook??) So I booted up normally and tried even to run disk utility from the CD and it said it was the wrong version as well.
I researched the internet and saw target disk mode but this old white macbook doesn't have a firewire port. So I just hooked up a carbon copy clone of my desktop from a USB harddrive and was able to boot from that and run disk utility to fix the errors. So the disk errors are fixed and disk verify shows no errors.
However, my only outstanding issue is that I cannot boot from the CD drive. If I'm on the road and don't have the usb drive and have trouble with regular boot I will not be able to boot until I get home. I have upgraded the OS since I purchased the macbook but only to 10.6. Do I need a 10.6 startup CD as opposed to the one that originally came with the mac?
