OS X :: Leopard: Slow Boot And Shut Down Times?
Oct 31, 2007Well by all means the Leopard boot and shut down times are not SLOW, but I found that Tiger was so so so much faster at this. Is it just me or do you guys have this too?

View 24 RepliesI have a new 09' 20" iMac Core Duo 2.66 with Snow Leopard.
Shut Down: = 7 Seconds. Tried 4 times, same result.
Start Up: 42-44 seconds to Login Screen
Login To Desktop fully loaded: = 6 Seconds
I am not impressed by the Start up or Login. I believe I clocked Leopard at the exact same speeds.
Overall I am not noticing much difference in anything.
Recently my macbook slowed down during it's initial boot process. It now takes 42 seconds just for the apple logo to appear. Finally after 1:20 I'm at the desktop. I can certainly live with this but am just curious as to why all of a sudden the initial process has basically doubled (getting to the apple logo).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was planning to get Snowey and a SSD at the same time, but the latter had to wait. So far, Im seeing at least a ten seconds improvement in boot time with Snow Leopard:
17" Macbook pro unibody 2.93 Ghz, 4 GB ram 7200rpm HD
before SL: boot up from 39 to 55 seconds
after SL: boot up time from 30 to 39 seconds
Ok, so there is no interest in this topic.
For me boot time is a rather important criterium.
And I think the fact that SL reduce this with almost 10 seconds is AMAZING.
In Leopard I had times where I could boot in almost 15 seconds, some times at 21 seconds if it was running slow and for the most part it was 17 seconds. All these times btw are recorded at time of power button press to desktop screen.
In Snow Leopard the times have almost doubled.... Fast boot in Snow Leopard is around 20-30 seconds for me now and a slow boot (which just happened) took a little over 40 seconds.
Anyone else experiencing this? Besides the boot times SL feels a lot faster in system responsiveness than Leopard.
Doe anyone else think that, when booting into 64-bit mode, your boot times are longer? I swear mine are 2-3 seconds longer. Performance seems just a tad bit better, so I'll stick with 64-bit mode, but I wanna see what other people think.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with my external hard drive. I was using it the other day working with some of the files on it and it shut down my computer a couple times. The second time it did this, after the computer shut down, I would turn it on and then it would go right back off until I removed the hard drive and turned it on and it was fine. Now my computer won't recognize the hard drive at all when i plug it in. The light on the hard drive will come on but it will not show up on my computer.
The hard drive is a WD 1TB Passport and it still works fine with every other computer I plug it into, PCs and macs both.I have a late 2008 13" Aluminum Macbook
My iMac 2.66 running 10.6.8 runs fine. But when I restart or boot up from shutdown, it takes a good 10 - 15 minutes of blank gray screen to reach the gray apple. Once there, it goes quickly to the login screen and all is well again.
Having searched these discussions, I've tried the following with no success:
- Safe Boot
- Deleted from Login Items
- Zapped the PRAM (possible clue: I can only do it once; when I continue to hold down the keys for an additional 2 minutes or so, nothing more happens after that first Zap. PRAM battery problem?)

I have a MacBook Pro with bootcamp and Windows 7 as well as OS X (unsure of version number at this moment, but think its 10.5). On the Windows 7 side, webpages load quickly in both Firefox 3.6.10 and Internet Explorer 8.0 and I rarely have trouble. On the MAC side, webpages are often unbearably slow to load and often do not load at all or time out or stop halfway through loading. This is both occurring in Firefox (latest version) and Safari (latest version).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just upgrades my iMac to snow leopard. I did not see this problem right away but about a few weeks later. My computer is really, really slow when I surf the internet. But it is not slow consistently. Sometimes pages will load immediately and other times it will tell me I can't open the page due to the server not being found? I really don't know where to start looking for a problem.
Could I have a virus?
Could the Airport just be getting old and starting to fail?
Do I have too much info on the computer already and that is effecting something?
Could it be the Snow Leopard?
Could someone hacked into the modem and is jogging the bandwidth? ( I don't have the wifi locked but live in a pretty rural area)
Everything is fine and great with my iMac 27 except for the fact that logging out and rebooting takes ages. I've already disconnected all 3rd party USB devices and logout/reboot times are still close to ~3 minutes.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recemtly purchased a G4 at a local thrift store for $10. After repairing the processor and installing and updating os X 10.4 on a 20g drive I added and additional 100g drive for music and videos. The 20g drive read/write is fine and writing to the 100g works fine also. When attempting to view videos located on the 100g drive, the system hangs. when using itunes it must rebuffer every few seconds.
View 5 Replies View RelatedNot really directly Mac related, but I seem to be having a problem with my mouse. It worked fine until a few days ago. Scrolling up on the wheel would work fine, then all of a sudden it would move up extremely slow, and it happens when the wheel is pressed into the click position and when its not.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been using my mac religiously on a daily basis for almost a year now. I have noticed that progressively the boot time and shut down time is getting longer and longer. And I understand as I install programs and use the laptop more, it's going to get slower and slower but right now the boot time and shut down time is more than I would expect.
For boot up, the only applications that open on login is Mail and Quicksilver.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the boot and shut down times?
I have posted a question on the Apple site, I would like to get some input from the people here as well.I wont bother typing out the whole thing, much simpler to let you go have a quick read at the questions and solutions I have tried.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've had my 13" macbook (running SL) for almost 2 years now (I believe) but recently it has started to act rather oddly. On startup it used to take probably 20 seconds or so while now it can take upwards of 3 minutes just to get to the desktop. I have added a few newer programs on startup but this time is just from the apple screen to the desktop, not counting the time for the startup items.
Also, the more annoying issue, when shutting down my macbook will sit at just the desktop (no icons) for several seconds before going to a blank screen for sometimes several minutes. Sometimes the circular loading thing (the one that is used when starting up) appears and when it does I'm forced to do a manual shutdown (holding the power button) because it refuses to shut down. My battery has also been dying easier and taking longer to charge so could it have something to do with the battery?
Yesterday my macbook start shutting down and booting up slowly. It used to work so quickly, and now it's taking much longer. The only thing I did was install a printer before it happened. Then when the problem began I uninstalled the printer with the uninstaller that it came with. I thought maybe that was the issue, but uninstalling it didn't seem to make a difference. I checked in the preferences to make sure it is starting up with the hard drive and it is. I'm not sure what else to do. It's not a huge issue, but it is a difference and the fact that it's only about a month old worries me. I do have to add that even though it's slower than it was just 24 hours ago, it's faster than my Dell PC ever was
View 10 Replies View RelatedFor the past months or so, my machine takes about 40 seconds to start-up and shut-down. And thats after that little "spinning wheel appears on the monitor, which takes about 10 to 15 seconds for an image to appear. In the past, it took less than half that amount of time. I've run Macs "Drive Genius" and "Disk Utilities" from the install DVD several times to no avail. Can someone suggest how to at least cut this time down and back to normal. Its really a drag waiting for this "wheel" to stop spinning, which seems like

I have my laptop which is Powerbook G5 version 10.3.9 Panther. For the last two months the PB didn't boot up and it was beeping three times and white lid blinking. After going through internet i notice the problem was RAM and i need to change it. I bought another RAM 1GB (the old one was 512MB) and inserted it in the lower RAM slot.
Thank GOD the mac boot up properly and everything was fine. I charged it to full capacity and shut it down. The next day i started my mac as usual but surprisingly it beeps three times and it didn't boot up again.I open the RAM cover tried to remove it and replaces it again but it didn't work out and i am totally devastated and i don't know what to do any more. The brand name of the RAM i used is TRANSCEND.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis is the 1st time i got a Mac , i bought a black Macbook 2.4GHz some days ago .
I installed Windows Vista Ultimate using Boot Camp , and all went smoothly .
Only 1 prob is when restarting , i have to wait too long for the Windows to log on , i think about 1min with the black screen.
And if i want to boot in Mac OS , i have to push down the D button or the Alt, it takes quite a long time too .
So do you guys have any solution to this problem ? I want to get rid of the waiting time, way too much.
And do you know how to make my Macbook jump right in the choosing section when it starts ? ( so that i dont have to push down any button when it starts )
Why does my macbook pro shut off before it even gets to the password page? It does not boot up.

I have a problem. I have installed Leopard on a partition on my MacBook. When install successfully completed, my Macbook restarted but it hangs and does not restart so I had to switch the power off by the power button. I then switched my MacBook back on to complete registration and finally got into Leopard.I then updated using Software Update and then restarted but it will not restart. When I try to restart i get presented with a window telling me that "Updating Boot Cache". I then click "OK" but it hangs on the desktop wallpaper and pointer. I have tried to leave my MacBook for half an hour but it is still hanging on the desktop wallpaper and pointer. Same thing happens with Shutdown
