grey Apple screen on my Mac Pro. If I unplug my external hard drive (MyBook 1TB, formatted HSF, USB) it takes 15 seconds. From the Apple logo it takes another 20-30 seconds to fully load OS X. I really don't want to unplug my external drive every time I restart.

View 24 Replies View RelatedRecently my macbook slowed down during it's initial boot process. It now takes 42 seconds just for the apple logo to appear. Finally after 1:20 I'm at the desktop. I can certainly live with this but am just curious as to why all of a sudden the initial process has basically doubled (getting to the apple logo).
View 3 Replies View RelatedEverything is fine and great with my iMac 27 except for the fact that logging out and rebooting takes ages. I've already disconnected all 3rd party USB devices and logout/reboot times are still close to ~3 minutes.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had this used laptop since last August, and up until last month the internet was super awesome and fast and lovely. Then, I'm alnost positive, the last update was like some big Adobe THING, and it seemed like soon after that my Airport connection was very low (like 1 or 2 out of 4 bars are full) in comparison to before, and my internet refused to load anything.
After googling around, I have:
-Updated the firmware on my wireless router (Linksys wrt54gs)
-Gone into my network settings and changed my dns servers to the OpenDNS.com ones, and also to the 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 ones.
-completely restarted my router
-changed the password on my router just in case someone was stealing my wireless connection?
None of these things have made any change. I have to click the reload button about 50 times, (no joke) in order for a page to at least halfway load and it's just ridiculous. Anyway, I'm not sure what is wrong or if I need a new router, but my desktop PC works fine (internet-wise) and my brother has a Gateway laptop that is running Windows XP that he also says suddenly got slow internet performance right around the time mine did. I'm running OSX tiger 10.4.2 (heh, i'm pretty sure)
I recently had to upgrade my OS to 10.6 (then to 10.6.8 via update). After the upgrade fro 10.5 though my computer had been running slow, especially safari. I haven't do anything different besides running the update. The only new program(s) I have is Diablo 3 which I know tkes up a lot of processing power, but that wouldn't explain the overall, extreme drop in speed when I'm not playing it.

I am on a macbook. My wireless was pretty decent during winter break but when I come back for spring break, it is ridiculously slow. The signal strength is completely full, but its almost dial up slow. my wireless on my iphone is blazing.

I have a MacBook Pro with bootcamp and Windows 7 as well as OS X (unsure of version number at this moment, but think its 10.5). On the Windows 7 side, webpages load quickly in both Firefox 3.6.10 and Internet Explorer 8.0 and I rarely have trouble. On the MAC side, webpages are often unbearably slow to load and often do not load at all or time out or stop halfway through loading. This is both occurring in Firefox (latest version) and Safari (latest version).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just upgrades my iMac to snow leopard. I did not see this problem right away but about a few weeks later. My computer is really, really slow when I surf the internet. But it is not slow consistently. Sometimes pages will load immediately and other times it will tell me I can't open the page due to the server not being found? I really don't know where to start looking for a problem.
Could I have a virus?
Could the Airport just be getting old and starting to fail?
Do I have too much info on the computer already and that is effecting something?
Could it be the Snow Leopard?
Could someone hacked into the modem and is jogging the bandwidth? ( I don't have the wifi locked but live in a pretty rural area)
This problem has just krept up in the last couple of days on my MacPro. A page will load about halfway then just stall and when it finally loads it is in text with no images.

After repairing the processor and installing and updating os X 10.4 on a 20g drive I added and additional 100g drive for music and videos. The 20g drive read/write is fine and writing to the 100g works fine also. When attempting to view videos located on the 100g drive, the system hangs. when using itunes it must rebuffer every few seconds.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi downloaded about 3.1 gbs of music onto it and it was working ok, well now that i removed everything off the internal memory its running so slow!! my safari got updated and everytime i go to a website is see that blue bar lag to the other end ,i bought a 1tb external HD to keep memory free in the macbook to keep it from slowing down but its still slow .i am really considering selling this and getting an hp computer if i cant fix this, cause i paid nearly 2k dollars for the laptop
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been reading this site for a while now, first time I'm posting. I recently purchased 8 GB of RAM for my 2010 13" MBP. There are two 4 GB DDR3 PC3-10500 1333mhz sticks. When I install them in the laptop my computer does not get past the apple logo boot screen (the spinning disc freezes). However, I can boot into Windows (boot camp) without issues.
Also, when I pair either of the 4 GB sticks with one of my old 2 GB stock sticks the laptop boots up fine in OS X. The system profiler registers it as 6 GB of 1067 mhz RAM (the stock sticks are 1067 mhz)
I've been using my mac religiously on a daily basis for almost a year now. I have noticed that progressively the boot time and shut down time is getting longer and longer. And I understand as I install programs and use the laptop more, it's going to get slower and slower but right now the boot time and shut down time is more than I would expect.
For boot up, the only applications that open on login is Mail and Quicksilver.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the boot and shut down times?
I have posted a question on the Apple site, I would like to get some input from the people here as well.I wont bother typing out the whole thing, much simpler to let you go have a quick read at the questions and solutions I have tried.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was planning to get Snowey and a SSD at the same time, but the latter had to wait. So far, I�m seeing at least a ten seconds improvement in boot time with Snow Leopard:
17" Macbook pro unibody 2.93 Ghz, 4 GB ram 7200rpm HD
before SL: boot up from 39 to 55 seconds
after SL: boot up time from 30 to 39 seconds
Ok, so there is no interest in this topic.
For me boot time is a rather important criterium.
And I think the fact that SL reduce this with almost 10 seconds is AMAZING.
In Leopard I had times where I could boot in almost 15 seconds, some times at 21 seconds if it was running slow and for the most part it was 17 seconds. All these times btw are recorded at time of power button press to desktop screen.
In Snow Leopard the times have almost doubled.... Fast boot in Snow Leopard is around 20-30 seconds for me now and a slow boot (which just happened) took a little over 40 seconds.
Anyone else experiencing this? Besides the boot times SL feels a lot faster in system responsiveness than Leopard.
Doe anyone else think that, when booting into 64-bit mode, your boot times are longer? I swear mine are 2-3 seconds longer. Performance seems just a tad bit better, so I'll stick with 64-bit mode, but I wanna see what other people think.
View 5 Replies View RelatedInstalled 10.6.5 a few days after it came out. I have an IMAC white version 4 years old. It now crashes several times a day. Symptoms are screen is locked and mouse and keyboard have no effect. Dont have any obscure software. In fact the problem has occurred when all I have open are a couple of Safari windows. It requires a restart which is pretty annoying as it tends to happen in the middle of doing something important like online bookings.
Earlier versions of this OS had many similar USB problems that were fixed in 10.6.4 (tho Apple never
mentioned them). Seems like the same problems have crept back in.
The last 2 days my iMac has completely frozen on me at random times. Frozen meaning, no mouse movement, no keyboard activity (caps lock not responding) and no OSX activity whatsoever. Temp at the time 41C, CPU Usage at 21% or smth, Fan speed at around 1200rpm. However, I don't get the infamous kernel panic error. I haven't changed anything hardware wise. I did have a couple of months ago the graphics glitch problem. Last software update was the iWork one. iMac is Aluminum 20' with C2D 2.4 and ATi 2600 Pro.

For the last two months the PB didn't boot up and it was beeping three times and white lid blinking.After going through internet i notice the problem was RAM and i need to change it. I bought another RAM 1GB (the old one was 512MB) and inserted it in the lower RAM slot.
Thank GOD the mac boot up properly and everything was fine. I charged it to full capacity and shut it down.The next day i started my mac as usual but surprisingly it beeps three times and it didn't boot up again.I open the RAM cover tried to remove it and replaces it again but it didn't work out and i am totally devastated and i don't know what to do any more.The brand name of the RAM i used is TRANSCEND.
My ibookG4 won't boot past the blue screen. I have run fsck several times in single user because it won't boot in safe mode. Every time it comes back **** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED **** and never that the volume is ok. This blue screen problem occurred after trying to hook up a wireless router and changing settings in airport. If anyone knows how I can fix this.

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate using Boot Camp , and all went smoothly .
Only 1 prob is when restarting , i have to wait too long for the Windows to log on , i think about 1min with the black screen.
And if i want to boot in Mac OS , i have to push down the D button or the Alt, it takes quite a long time too .
So do you guys have any solution to this problem ? I want to get rid of the waiting time, way too much.
And do you know how to make my Macbook jump right in the choosing section when it starts ? ( so that i dont have to push down any button when it starts )
I bought a 30" Apple Cinema HD Display 2-3 weeks ago and have been using it. I can't get over how grainy/sparkly this thing is. It is WAY more grainy than my 9C60 Macbook Pro C2D's matte display, my iMac G5's display, or my Dell 2405fpw. In fact, on those 3 displays I just listed, I can get over the grain in about 10seconds (in that I just stop noticing it).
But on the 30", it's just ALWAYS THERE, I can't shake it. It looks like a thin film of dirt covering the screen, like when you get fingerprints on a cellphone screen or something. It is mostly visible with pure white or green screens, and almost invisible with blue or black screens. When I go back to my MBP it kills me how smooth the screen is on the MBP compared to the ACD, and I thought the MBP was grainy before I started using the ACD.I was hoping that after a couple weeks I would stop noticing it but if anything, it's gotten more annoying.
It's a hindrance to me because it sort of kills the definition between whites and slightly off-whites, (which are used a lot in web-design) because the grain overpowers the difference in between two colours. For example, I can't see the repeating wavy pattern here: http://macheist.com/img/bundle_back.png unless I enlarge it). Also I am completely unable to evaluate JPEG or film noise unless I zoom up.I went to the local Apple Store, and there 30" ACD looked about as bad as mine. So I guess, with my sample size of 2 units, every display has this issue. I just was wondering if my display had it to an abnormally high degree.Does anyone have this problem with their 30" ACD, or any ACD for that matter??
My friend's Macbook Pro (2006, 1.83ghz, upgraded to 2gb ram) has been making ridiculously loud fan noises. We found it was coming from the right fan, sounds like something is scraping - almost a tractor engine-type sound. I have a newer Macbook Pro and I installed fan control 1.2 on both of our macs to compare. It turns out on hers, the LEFT fan is running at 0rpm and the RIGHT fan (the noisy one) is running at fairly average speeds (compared to mine, which is quiet - between 1500 and 3500rpm). The temperature seems to be on par with mine (about 115-140 degrees F). We did a PMU reset, which didn't change anything. Do I need to replace BOTH fans? I have researched it, and it seems like I could replace them if I had to.

There aren't any programs running in the background, this just simply happens when I leave the computer on. I'm assuming it's because there is dust buildup on the internal parts, but it's odd that it progressed from being fine to the stat that it is in today in the matter of days. Is there a way to clean the inside? Apple technician to have a look at it?
