I am trying to install Mac OS X on my PC which is running Windows XP. I have tried both VMWare Workstation and Sun xVM VirtualBox and neither one can recognize the DVD in the drive.
If I use windows explorer to look at the DVD, it shows me the "Windows Support" partition of the DVD.
Are you allowed to install Lion on a vmware workstation?I know earlier version you were not allowed via licensing issues.

I have just installed Windows XP with VMWare Fusion (2.0.6) and every time I shut down VMWare and check the size of the virtual machine back in Finder in OS X (Snow Leopard) it has grown by 2GB or so. Why is it doing this and how can I stop it? (It's now 8GB+ even though there is no software installed on the Windows side). I am running these on a late 2007 iMac.

Now I tried to download Virtual PC running the .dmg file, but all that popped up was an updater. It said I needed to download the program.
I'm running Windows 7 from an .iso via VirtualBox. I set up the SATA and designated the RAM and everything, Windows even loads! The thing is, I installed it once and everything worked perfectly (even IE!), but the next time I booted it up, it wanted to install again.

Alright, so I've installed Windows 7 RC on my iMac with Boot Camp. Booting straight into Win everything works fine (I had some issues trying to connect my Wireless Keyboard and Mouse, but it's fine now). I have 3 issues:
1. Firstly, is there any way for me to access my files stored on the Mac partition in Windows (e.g. Music, Videos etc.)? I tried using HFS+ Explorer but it I get stuck at the 'AutoDetect Partition' phase because it says "No HFS+ Partition found". Any ideas?
2. Now I've also got VMWare Fusion running on my Mac, and when I start it, it detects my Windows partition and so I load Windows through it. The OS loads up fine, but for some reason it doesn't detect my WiFi adapter and so the Internet in Windows doesn't work (it works fine via Boot Camp). Is this normal (since maybe the WiFi is already connected through OS X so won't work in Windows at the same time)?
3. Lastly, I've installed the VMWare Tools in Windows, and it seemed to go on without a problem, but for some reason my 'Unity' option doesn't work. The button is there, but when I click it the Win7 window disappears. I figured, OK, probably just loading or something, but nothing happens. The VMWare main screen still shows that Windows is 'Powered On'.
now that I have leopard installed and ready on my computer, I'm just itching to link up Smackbook with Spaces. has anyone been able to get this to work? I mean, installing virtual desktop at this point seems redundant and in leopard, the options for customizing the sudden motion sensor seem almost endless.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just installed Windows 98 SE in the VMWare Fusion Beta (latest update), and it seems to work very well, except the fact, that whenever I ask it to install the tools, no setup windows pops up, as it says there will in the help file. I also tried Google, but noone else seems to have the same problem.
It really is a big problem, as I can't have a resolution above 640x480 and more than 16 colors, which prevents me from running my retro games like RCT and Theme Hospital.
Before you ask, I had found some old games a few months ago that I wanted to play for nostalgia sake, so I made some Windows 95 and 98 virtual machines. It was pretty easy actually, since I just used Disk Utility to create images of the install discs. VMWare had a nice guide on their site that helped me get networking setup properly also.
But then I got to thinking, it'd be pretty fun to try and get Windows 3.1 up and running as well. I was able to make images of some MS-DOS 6.22 install disks and got that installed just fine. My problem actually comes when trying to install Windows itself. I was able to get the install files from 2 different sources. The first was just a folder of ALL the install files from 6 different disks, and the second was 7 different ZIP files from 7 different disks. I tried creating a single image from the first source, and 7 different images from the 7 unzipped folders from the second source, but on both attempts I'm unable to access the A: drive in DOS to start the setup. It gives me an error message about reading from the drive, followed by the standard "Abort, Retry, Fail?"
Has anybody else tried to get a Windows 3.1 virtual machine up and running and come across this problem? I even tried Googling for the exact lists of files contained on the 6 disks from my first source in order to try and split those up and make the necessary images, but unsuccessfully.

I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for a computer desk/workstation. I'm willing to spend some $$ on something, and am just wondering if there are any pieces out there that you guys really like. I use a Mac Pro, which I like to keep on the desk. Besides that, I don't have that much hardware -- MFC printer that's pretty big, but that will probably be replaced by something that has a smaller footprint. I'll be putting it in my basement, so size isn't really a huge concern.

I went for nice and clean but wound up with something so sterile, something you'd find in a clean room. Note: the macbook looks very dirty in this picture but it is pristine (I blame the tungsten lighting and iphone camera on this front) I plan on getting a 20-24 inch Dell display along with a kb/m so that may help, but what else do you think I can do while still keeping the clean look?

I work for an EMS organization that has several windows workstations (running xp) that connect to a larger server, which hosts our shared drive ("U") as well as windows specific programs for generating reports. Specifically, one of our call logs is a microsoft access database that is linked via our network to generate a specific reference number for our calls.
Now, I'm moving up in the world and going to be directing human resources and pr for the agency, and while the windows workstations are nice, I am a damn fine mac user and would love to use my unibody 17" pro for the job. Here is where my questions come in. I'd like to use my mac running virtualbox, parallels, or whatever with an xp install to connect to the server and have a typical workstation desktop (the U drive, network attached programs) next to my osx desktop. I know macs can access shared drives on server 2003, but can I set up a virtual machine to emulate one of our workstations?
I am wondering how can I administrate multiple Mac workstation across LAN as well as distribute software mpkg. I am thinking of doing this because I don't have a Xserve and ARD is just too expensive.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe last time I bought a Mac I wanted to buy an aluminum 24" iMac... but I just won't tolerate funky display issues as I am a professional photographer and need a great display (like the white 2.0 GHz CoreDuo iMacs have!). Great display? No such luck with the new aluminum iMacs. Anyway, my solution was to buy a MacBook 2.2 GHz (2.4's weren't quite out yet), load it up with 4 GB of RAM, pop in a Hitachi 250 GB Hard Drive and hook it up to a sweet new HP LP2465 24" wide screen S-PVA monitor. Also hooked up a few high capacity external hard drives for the mega storage I need for client images. Here's what it looks like on my desk: I use this to multi task with numerous applications simultaneously along with editing large files in Photoshop CS3. Though this isn't the hottest machine to come down the pike, I have found it to be very capable and super enjoyable to use as a Photoshop workstation. It is speedy and a perfect mate to the 24" HP widescreen monitor. And with pulling just a few plugs, I can head off to the sofa or bed to surf the net, do e-mails, etc. in relaxed comfort. Now I'm really hoping the forthcoming Mac mini revision includes an option with at least the specs of the current MacBook (2.4 GHz, 4 GB ram, etc) or BETTER! so I can use it on my desk permanently with the HP monitor and leave my MacBook for use when away from my desk. If the screens on the new 24" iMacs were what they should have been, I'd snap up a 3.06 GHz model in a hot hurry... but unfortunately, Apple screwed the pooch on displays in the new iMacs. DANG that bothers me. And I won't buy another iMac again until Apple gets the displays right again.

I'm wanting to purchase two of the new 24" iMacs for my Graphic/Web design business. I've been looking at the 24" 2.66 model with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics chipset. I have been reading reviews that say this model of iMac is fine for gaming but not for a graphics workstation. Our main software is the Adobe Design suite, is anyone on this forum using this model of iMac as a graphics workstation, and do you find any lack in performance with adobe products.

I have a Mac Mini Server that came with Snow Leopard Server on it, and I would like to convert that to the non-server version of OS X and upgrade to Lion. I have not been able to find a procedure for this yet, and when trying to run the standard Lion installer on the machine, it pops up with the error message illustrated below. To summarize, I'd like to avoid the hassle of doing the OS reinstall and rebuild from Time Machine and instead do something equivalent to an upgrade from 10.6 Snow Leopard Server to plain-jane 10.7 Lion.

I just finished up a fresh install of Windows 7 and downloaded and installed the NVidia driver from their site directly since the one in the Boot Camp files is pretty old and technically the Vista driver anyway.
But I still need the Brightness, Sound, etc key functionality. Is there a way to selectively install Boot Camp drivers? That's the only one I need. The wireless, chipset, video and everything else works just fine (and in some cases better) than the ones included in Apple's setup.
I need to create a virtual drive but dont want to buy lots of expensive software as Idont do this very often. basically I have an ISO I need to set as a drive (alcohol 120% would do this in PC world)

The other day I didnt have anything to do so i was just having fun a little with some drawings on painter and photoshop while doing my everyday stuff (watching some streaming videos, or listening to music..etc) since it is my only computer, i do it for my work but also for my fun when I have nothing to do. When I watch a streaming video, let's say from youtube, i have it in full screen in one screen and on the other screen, I do my other stuff, like msn and doodling on photoshop and painter with my tablet..etc and my computer starts to lag, starts to respond very slowly, in a way that i cant do anything at all, and the streaming starts to play slow as well, then i reduce the size of the video instead of full screen and it looks a lil better for some time but then again it slows down my computer. Then when I check Activity Monitor I notice that I still have 10-12 GB free ram since I have only my everyday stuff open. but it shows 54 GB virtual memory and I dont understand what uses this much memory? I mean ok I make multi tab browsing..Etc but not more than I used to do on my old pc laptop with 4 gb ram, why does it use virtual memory when I still have 10 GB free ram? what should i do to avoid such situation other than not opening those applications at the same time? I wish that I was clear enough to explain my problem, I'm attaching a screenshot of my Activity Monitor,
