MacBook :: Graphics Workstation - Won't Tolerate Funky Display?
May 7, 2008
The last time I bought a Mac I wanted to buy an aluminum 24" iMac... but I just won't tolerate funky display issues as I am a professional photographer and need a great display (like the white 2.0 GHz CoreDuo iMacs have!). Great display? No such luck with the new aluminum iMacs. Anyway, my solution was to buy a MacBook 2.2 GHz (2.4's weren't quite out yet), load it up with 4 GB of RAM, pop in a Hitachi 250 GB Hard Drive and hook it up to a sweet new HP LP2465 24" wide screen S-PVA monitor. Also hooked up a few high capacity external hard drives for the mega storage I need for client images. Here's what it looks like on my desk: I use this to multi task with numerous applications simultaneously along with editing large files in Photoshop CS3. Though this isn't the hottest machine to come down the pike, I have found it to be very capable and super enjoyable to use as a Photoshop workstation. It is speedy and a perfect mate to the 24" HP widescreen monitor. And with pulling just a few plugs, I can head off to the sofa or bed to surf the net, do e-mails, etc. in relaxed comfort. Now I'm really hoping the forthcoming Mac mini revision includes an option with at least the specs of the current MacBook (2.4 GHz, 4 GB ram, etc) or BETTER! so I can use it on my desk permanently with the HP monitor and leave my MacBook for use when away from my desk. If the screens on the new 24" iMacs were what they should have been, I'd snap up a 3.06 GHz model in a hot hurry... but unfortunately, Apple screwed the pooch on displays in the new iMacs. DANG that bothers me. And I won't buy another iMac again until Apple gets the displays right again.

I run Rhino (64 bit) with windows 7 through bootcamp. The software mfg's recommended graphics card is the AMD FirePro v7900 or v5900, and user group recos the nvidea quadro 4000. I am currently using an Nvidea gtx285 and driving two displays from it. Looking to upgrade both memory and video card for optimal performance.

I'm currently running an all new MBP 13" at 2.66 GHz. The tests I made today (large textures handling in 3D environment, OpenGL, music playing in background) gave me an internal CPU temperature as high as 83*C. Should I worry about this? What is the max temperature a Core 2 Duo at 2.66 GHz should tolerate, in a MBP? I need to know because I'll use pretty often the laptop to do some "heavy" 3D demonstrations, in front of a classroom. I don't want the MBP to be prematurely damaged by heat.

I have noticed something strange that occurs occasionally on my MBP (i5, latest gen). The display seems to have "noise" in the quality of graphics. It's hit or miss when it happens, and a reboot stops it temporarily. It returns after a few days.
I'm going to the Apple store today, but thought I'd see if anyone else has this issue. I am a little touchy about MBP graphics (had issues in the past

I recently bought a base MBP-RD and can say that I am overall impressed with it, though I have found a couple issues already. One of them is related to the iSight camera which for some reason doesn't work. The camera appears in system profiler, but it shows as "camera not detected" when trying to launch application like iChat, Skype, FaceTime, etc. I already tried re-installing OSX Lion, and still not working.
I have also found some weird issue with graphics where it freezes a series of frames when going to Mission Control or App Expose.
I am returning this computer as there are other things I didn't like, but overall pretty impressive (no LED battery indicator, no Lock slot, no sleep light indicator...)

I have no idea what's causing it. I had a feeling it was VLC, but the lines show up when it's closed. The lines aren't fixed, they move with the window. It's like the window shadowing thingy is broken. I've done the obvious, repair permissions, reboot.

Over the past few days I've been noticing something peculiar whenever my new MacPro on 10.5.2 is waking from sleep. It likes to type the letter "r" and if I have Mail open, the email that was open or highlighted when I put the computer to sleep will have spawned a reply window (Open Apple-R) and there will be exactly one "r" typed in as a reply. it doesn't send the email. This isn't an issue that's limited to mail either. I noticed that it somehow managed to rename a folder to "r" on my Desktop and I've had "r" inserted into open documents.

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro. I wanted to upgrade the video card, but had 2 questions.
1. Is the 4850 the best card to get right now? This card was announced a long time ago and nothing new seems to be coming out anytime soon. I don't want to buy this card and have a new card announced soon after.
2. The ATi has one display port and one DVI. Is there a card with 2 display ports?

but anytime someone pounds on the table and I have my 12' iBook just chilling on it, it makes a resetting noise, a very mechanical sound that makes it seem like it's resetting itself once. I have no idea why, and I just beg people around me to regulate their anger.
However, even when I am picking up my iBook it'll make the noise. Is this a sign of a deteorating cd-rom drive? Or are most iBooks and Apple laptops like this?

I have a friends macbook. It's circa 2004 according to her. The display look horrible. It looks equivalent to like 8bit windows YUCK. I'm not sure the problem, but it's hard to diagnose (I'm a noob anyway), when I can't see anything!!
Heres a pic
could someone point me in the right direction. I tried searching but it's hard to find anything because I don't know how one might describe this problem correctly.

I have the latest Mac Pro with a Cinima Display, and, yesterday, I have bought a Thunderbolt Display. Unfortunately this new display does not work with my big mac. Has anyone a clue if Apple or a third party supplier is offering or will offer a graphic board supporting Thunderbolt Display or rather an adapter doing so?

The display on the Mac computer at my work has been changed so that all the icons are very tiny, the fonts are very large, and when I move the mouse, the entire screen moves so that most of the time a part of the screen is hidden and I have to jiggle the mouse around to read everything - I'm not scrolling, it just automatically does it without me clicking. I am not really familiar with Macs but I do know how to get to system preferences, and I can't think what option might make the screen do that. It really makes the computer harder to use - does anyone know what it is? I also didn't see where I could make the icons bigger or smaller, it doesn't seem like the Desktop/Display really does it.

I'm not a huge gamer, but sometimes my 120GT (in a 2.66 Quad Nehalem) just doesn't cut it.
I'm open to flashing a PC card, but I do need that damned mini displayport for the 24in LED monitor.
Do I have a lot of options?

After packing away my little brothers sawtooth 400Mhz with 384mb RAM and an 8Mb ATI AGP graphics card and then unpacking it I've been having a problem. When starting the computer up the screen shows nothing at all I have tested to see if the screen is broken and it seems to be functional. I think the card itself might be broken? BTW, I'm using the VGA slot and not the DVI slot on the back. I have also removed and cleaned the card just incase that might've been the problem.

Has anyone ever tried to use a xserve as a workstation? What would be the limitations? I'm thinking that a decent video card might be hard to fit in, and possible noise.

I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for a computer desk/workstation. I'm willing to spend some $$ on something, and am just wondering if there are any pieces out there that you guys really like. I use a Mac Pro, which I like to keep on the desk. Besides that, I don't have that much hardware -- MFC printer that's pretty big, but that will probably be replaced by something that has a smaller footprint. I'll be putting it in my basement, so size isn't really a huge concern.

I am trying to install Mac OS X on my PC which is running Windows XP. I have tried both VMWare Workstation and Sun xVM VirtualBox and neither one can recognize the DVD in the drive.
If I use windows explorer to look at the DVD, it shows me the "Windows Support" partition of the DVD.

[URL:..] As you can see, that is probably the most boring workstation ever! I went for nice and clean but wound up with something so sterile, something you'd find in a clean room. Note: the macbook looks very dirty in this picture but it is pristine (I blame the tungsten lighting and iphone camera on this front) I plan on getting a 20-24 inch Dell display along with a kb/m so that may help, but what else do you think I can do while still keeping the clean look?

I've tried typing some search terms for what I think I want to be able to do, but I'm getting nothing relevant- I figured I'd just spell out my problem on the forums and see if there are any solutions. I work for an EMS organization that has several windows workstations (running xp) that connect to a larger server, which hosts our shared drive ("U") as well as windows specific programs for generating reports. Specifically, one of our call logs is a microsoft access database that is linked via our network to generate a specific reference number for our calls.
Now, I'm moving up in the world and going to be directing human resources and pr for the agency, and while the windows workstations are nice, I am a damn fine mac user and would love to use my unibody 17" pro for the job. Here is where my questions come in. I'd like to use my mac running virtualbox, parallels, or whatever with an xp install to connect to the server and have a typical workstation desktop (the U drive, network attached programs) next to my osx desktop. I know macs can access shared drives on server 2003, but can I set up a virtual machine to emulate one of our workstations?

I'm wanting to purchase two of the new 24" iMacs for my Graphic/Web design business. I've been looking at the 24" 2.66 model with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics chipset. I have been reading reviews that say this model of iMac is fine for gaming but not for a graphics workstation. Our main software is the Adobe Design suite, is anyone on this forum using this model of iMac as a graphics workstation, and do you find any lack in performance with adobe products.

I know this isn't the right terminology, but hopefully my point will come across. I have a Mac Mini Server that came with Snow Leopard Server on it, and I would like to convert that to the non-server version of OS X and upgrade to Lion. I have not been able to find a procedure for this yet, and when trying to run the standard Lion installer on the machine, it pops up with the error message illustrated below. To summarize, I'd like to avoid the hassle of doing the OS reinstall and rebuild from Time Machine and instead do something equivalent to an upgrade from 10.6 Snow Leopard Server to plain-jane 10.7 Lion.

My wife's macbook monitor is destroyed due to happy 2 year old. It won't be worthwhile to replace the monitor and it is not fixable without some expensive work being done on it, therefore I would like to use our TV as an external monitor and retire the macbook to being a mediia computer. I have connected it to the TV, and I see an empty desktop, as far as I can determine it looks like it is treating the TV as a secondary display - that the desktop is extended onto - so I cannot actually interact with the normal desktop. When I try to run things using keyboard shortcuts I hear some sounds of things starting, but I don't see anything on the TV. So what I need to do is to have some way to tell it to treat the secondary display as the primary display.

My external display (HP w2207) seems to conflict with my MacBook Pro (15 inch Retina display, early 2013) since I upgraded MacBook OS to 10.9.4.The external display works at initial boot of Mac but does not work after OS sleeps and I attempt to awaken, and while the external display is not waking, the Retina display flashes through different screen views, which only partially reflect my normal screen, or do not reflect my normal screen at all.
