IMac :: Graphic Workstation - Lack In Performance With Adobe Products?

Apr 18, 2009

I'm wanting to purchase two of the new 24" iMacs for my Graphic/Web design business. I've been looking at the 24" 2.66 model with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics chipset. I have been reading reviews that say this model of iMac is fine for gaming but not for a graphics workstation. Our main software is the Adobe Design suite, is anyone on this forum using this model of iMac as a graphics workstation, and do you find any lack in performance with adobe products.

Mac Pro :: New Vs New IMac (27 I7) For Graphic Design

Oct 31, 2009

I've been reading threads here comparing the Quad Mac Pro vs the yet to be released iMac 27" i7 and most seem to focus on use as a machine for video editing with Final Cut Pro. I'm a pro-graphic designer using the last model Power Mac G5 and wonder how these two might compare with heavy Photoshop usage and design for print in general. One of the main issues i think may be drive speed and I'm really not so knowledgeable in terms of the benefits of internal drives in a new Mac Pro vs whatever the best external option would be for the iMac so any insights any has in this area in terms of speed would be highly appreciated. (Is there some super-fast high end external storage option that would suit the iMac will and give me the same performance as a second internal drive on a Mac Pro?)

And what about the memory...I think the ECC option is not available for the iMac...does that mac a huge difference between the two..or am I wrong? I think either machine would be a huge step forward from my PMG5 (which is doing pretty well still) I'm just wondering if it makes sense for me to wait for the next generation Mac Pro to come out (assuming it's early 2010...yes predicting Apple product releases is an exact science as we all know.)

IMac :: Most Suitable System For Graphic Artists

Oct 22, 2009

I am a print designer currently using a dinosaur 1.6 G5 tower and CS2. I use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I also shoot in RAW with my Nikon D80 and currently do most of my editing at my office computer because it is faster. I work primarily in vector graphics which is why my 1.6 is "working." After 3 HD problems and lost data, It is time for an upgrade. I will miss my 20" matte cinema display and will have to find a new way of working in my bright living situation. Yes, there will be color shift on that glossy screen but I use Pantone swatch books.

All this hype for i5/i7 chips is coming mostly from motion designers or gamers which I am not. Coming from a 1.6, I think the base model Duo will blow me away. My office machine is a 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 5 GB, 10.4.11, so the iMac should be equal to my machine at work and probably a bit better. (depending on snow lep lag) I hope to keep the machine for as long as It runs. I also will update to CS4, if that matters. I know the base Duo will be a HUGE upgrade to my current fossil and it is obvious I hold on to my machines for awhile.

IMac :: Finding 24 Inch 3.6 Ghz Nividia 8800 Graphic Ram

Oct 8, 2009

ok so i have had my imac for over a year now, and the graphic card ram burned out a few weeks ago. i figured it was just because i was working it too hard. usually im running a second monitor, and almost constantly playing a video game on one with hulu running on the other. so i thought no big deal i have apple warranty for the next 3 years, so i took it into the store (which is almost 150miles from where i live). well a week later i went and picked it back up after they had "fixed" my problem by replacing the whole card.

but it hasn't been more then three weeks and im experiencing the same problem. i stopped using my second monitor when i got it back, so i have no clue why its doing this.

it seems to me, that the Geforce Gt 120 (ealy 20009 Imac) is in fact an MXM III,M76XT+/256MB,GDDR3 Card, witch means, its an Mobility Radeon2600XT from the previous Imacs, just on an MXM III socle ( it would get better benchmarks because of cooling an higher clocks).

Mac Pro :: Computer Desk / Workstation Recommendations

I'm willing to spend some $$ on something, and am just wondering if there are any pieces out there that you guys really like. I use a Mac Pro, which I like to keep on the desk. Besides that, I don't have that much hardware -- MFC printer that's pretty big, but that will probably be replaced by something that has a smaller footprint. Note: the macbook looks very dirty in this picture but it is pristine (I blame the tungsten lighting and iphone camera on this front) I plan on getting a 20-24 inch Dell display along with a kb/m so that may help, but what else do you think I can do while still keeping the clean look?

OS X :: OSX Windows Server 2003 Workstation

Sep 6, 2009

I've tried typing some search terms for what I think I want to be able to do, but I'm getting nothing relevant- I figured I'd just spell out my problem on the forums and see if there are any solutions. I work for an EMS organization that has several windows workstations (running xp) that connect to a larger server, which hosts our shared drive ("U") as well as windows specific programs for generating reports. Specifically, one of our call logs is a microsoft access database that is linked via our network to generate a specific reference number for our calls.

Now, I'm moving up in the world and going to be directing human resources and pr for the agency, and while the windows workstations are nice, I am a damn fine mac user and would love to use my unibody 17" pro for the job. Here is where my questions come in. I'd like to use my mac running virtualbox, parallels, or whatever with an xp install to connect to the server and have a typical workstation desktop (the U drive, network attached programs) next to my osx desktop. I know macs can access shared drives on server 2003, but can I set up a virtual machine to emulate one of our workstations?

IMac :: Photoshop Performance 27 Inch IMac

Nov 4, 2009

I have a new 27inch base model iMac that comes with 4GB ram and a 4670 256mb Radeon graphics card. I noticed that when I copy/paste images in photoshop cs4 and drag the images, the pasted image usually gets blocky and moves in slow motion when i drag it. My friend has a Mac with a 512mb video card and 4gb of ram and has no such issue. I'm wondering if the difference in VRAm is what is causing my sluggishness in Cs4

My question is: should I have opted for the 512 model graphics card? I have another week or so to return my iMac. Or is this a RAm issue, and should I upgrade to 8gb of ram? I guess I'm wondering how much of a difference video memory makes on system performance. Thanks!!

MacBook :: Graphics Workstation - Won't Tolerate Funky Display?

May 7, 2008

The last time I bought a Mac I wanted to buy an aluminum 24" iMac... but I just won't tolerate funky display issues as I am a professional photographer and need a great display (like the white 2.0 GHz CoreDuo iMacs have!). Great display? No such luck with the new aluminum iMacs. Anyway, my solution was to buy a MacBook 2.2 GHz (2.4's weren't quite out yet), load it up with 4 GB of RAM, pop in a Hitachi 250 GB Hard Drive and hook it up to a sweet new HP LP2465 24" wide screen S-PVA monitor. Also hooked up a few high capacity external hard drives for the mega storage I need for client images. Here's what it looks like on my desk: I use this to multi task with numerous applications simultaneously along with editing large files in Photoshop CS3. Though this isn't the hottest machine to come down the pike, I have found it to be very capable and super enjoyable to use as a Photoshop workstation. It is speedy and a perfect mate to the 24" HP widescreen monitor. And with pulling just a few plugs, I can head off to the sofa or bed to surf the net, do e-mails, etc. in relaxed comfort. Now I'm really hoping the forthcoming Mac mini revision includes an option with at least the specs of the current MacBook (2.4 GHz, 4 GB ram, etc) or BETTER! so I can use it on my desk permanently with the HP monitor and leave my MacBook for use when away from my desk. If the screens on the new 24" iMacs were what they should have been, I'd snap up a 3.06 GHz model in a hot hurry... but unfortunately, Apple screwed the pooch on displays in the new iMacs. DANG that bothers me. And I won't buy another iMac again until Apple gets the displays right again.
