I have a 2.26GHz 13"MBP, and I just ordered the intel 160GB Gen2 SSD for it. I'm curious if there are any changes I should make in Snow Leopard to optimize it for the SSD. I did some searching and saw that a lot of people are disabling the Sudden Motion Sensor in the Terminal. Are there any other things I should do? Also, I plan on doing a fresh install on the SSD, not cloning my existing drive. Will the SL Upgrade DVD that Apple sent me do the job, or will I need to first install Leopard, off the DVD that came with the MBP, then install SL? When I first install the intel SSD, will it be recognized, or do I need to format it a special way to get it to show up? I'm just trying to get everything squared away before the SSD arrives, so that I can do it right the first time. Also, I don't know if this matters or not, but I DO have the 1.7 Firmware Update installed.
Compiled List Of Suggestions:
1. Disable Sudden Motion Sensor [URL]
2. Uncheck "Put the Hard Disk to sleep when possible", under Energy Saver in System Preferences.
3. "noatime" *Check OCZ Forum for How-To. (I haven't decided if I am going to do this one.)

i've noticed generally the computers in the apple store, even though have lots of applications loaded, are still quite responsive. does anybody know how did they optimize it?
or can you share how did you optimized your system to make it more responsive?
there are two ways: hardware improvement, and software optimization.
obviously buying "better" hardware can help, but for those of us who can't afford to upgrade components of the computer, we can only resort to software optimization.

Got a maxed out 24" iMac on the way (3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Memory, 1TB Hard Drive) which will be arriving in 2 weeks. Just wondering if there is anything I can do to optimize performance and pro-long life on my iMac ready for hardcore music recording and editing, HD Video Editing, Photoshop, Web Design and Flash? Would it be wise to run every single process included in the Onyx application as soon as set up is complete or should I wait till Applications and Music have been installed? Anything else to do to maximize performance and life of the iMac?

I'm on a 2008 model Mac Pro 8-core system for work. For whatever reason it doesn't have a recovery partition. I read that if I don't have a recovery partition, I can't make a recovery USB bootable drive....so how do I make one? And no, I cannot reinstall the OS on here, that would be beyond detrimental to what's going on here. (too many details to get into)Â
Alternatively, can I make one with my 10.8.5 MacbookPro at home and run it here on my Lion system?Â

I am trying to recovery a file created in Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac. The file was lost after a power outage. In an attempt to recover the file, my first thought was to check for the file in the Microsoft AutoRecovery 2008 folder within my hardrive. However, the folder only contains a total of four files! Why? If my Microsoft Word is set up to auto save a document every 10 minutes...then how is it possible the folder could only contain 4 files? I am at a loss of how else to recover this file. I am currently attempting to do so with a free trial of Data Recovery Software to see if the file I lost even still exists, with no success so far.Â

I have a clone of a former G5 startup drive on a WD MyBook external HD that has never really been able to boot for the past few months, especially on an Intel MacBook. I've been able to recover some of the info manually using an old G4 Powerbook, but never completely recovered all of the info. I tried doing all that DD Rescue stuff, but it became a little too involved and over my head. There are still a few documents I'd like to try and salvage from the drive. Although the drive does get recognized on my MB, I can't access the info. The drive is actually in three partitions and I can only access one of them for some reason. I'm thinking about purchasing something like Disk Warrior to see if this would work. Is Disk Warrior or a similar program worth a shot?

I accidentally deleted all of the files on a friend's portable drive, when using terminal to try to delete a very large folder (the Trash Can was not working it was so large)--since the files/folders were very recently deleted I am looking into data recovery software to get the files back. The problem is that the HFS file system seems to be designed in such a way that once a folder/file is deleted, it is very difficult to recover it's name even if its data can be recovered, so most data recovery programs (such as FileSalvage) will recover only known file types and give them a a number (such as 0004.jpg). Does anyone know of any Mac/HFS recovery software that has found a way around this particular issue and can recover data with the folder structure/file names intact?

We lost a few files we were working on yesterday. Nothing saved after about 1PM can be found. Eek! . Is there a good way to deal with this, see if there are files there that are not showing up somehow perhaps? Or a good file recovery program perhaps?

I was uploading photos into iPhoto (with the delete originals option on) and my entire system froze up so I had to restart my MBP using the powerbutton. Going back to get the photos, all but 5 are gone. Any way to check if I can get any back? I'd be willing to buy reasonably priced software, but free is always better.

woke up this morning to a software update, go to restart for the big osx update and the load bar gets about an eighth of the way home and freezes, disappears and then the computer powers down. happens consistently for the next 10 minutes or so, so i get into recovery mode>disk utility, HD wont verify, go to repair it and theres another error. Can I backup onto an external HD from disk utility in recovery mode or will it not let me?

Using 10.7.3 on a new Mini and trying to use the "recovery" to reset the disk. Holding down Control - "R" on restart does nothing, goes immediately to normal desktop instead of the Disk Utilities or the RecoveryHD, I've tried all the combo's I can think of as well as Control - Option - "R", again straight to desktop. This is a new Mini with OSX 10.7.3 factory installed. Initial startup seemed to be normal. Can't find the RecoveryHD....I'm going to take it back and upgrade, so my interest is in erasing anything that would allow access to my data and the applications I installed (only Office).

I have a Mac Pro that I purchased in February 2012, and I'm selling it because the printing sub-system on a Mac is terrible. Won't go into details here -- suffice to say I've spent these past 3 months going round-and-round with printing issues, and I'm tired of dealing with it.Since I'm selling it, I wanted to erase everything and re-set it all back to factory specs.I had two partitions on there, the original Mac partition, and a BootCamp partition. Booting up using Command+R and selecting Disk Utility wouldn't let me erase those partitions and create a single new partition Kept giving me a Cannot Unmount Disk error. So I used a partition manager on The Ultimate Boot CD to erase the paritions on my Mac's HDD..Figured I would then use Internet Recovery to re-load everything on there. Don't really care if it takes a few hours to download. But Internet Recovery is not working..I hold Command+R or Command+Option+R and they both do the same thing -- a blinking folder with a question-mark in the midddle of it.
And the only thing I can find that will let me try using an external disk to boot with is something called Lion Recovery Disk Assistant -- but I can't use that because it requires a functioning Mac with a Recovery Partition. So how do I get this stupid thing to boot up to the Internet Recovery mode? I need to get it ready to ship later today.

I am having problems with booting my wife's 2010 iMac. It never boots completely. I gets to a point where the screen flashes over and over a message something about opening (or not) windows which were open when I shut down.Â
When I hold the OPTION key at startup I get the 'option' to start up with my system hard drive or Recovery 10.9.1.
What happens if I click on Recovery 10.9.1?Â

I'm running OSX 10.6.8 on an old 2007 Macbook. I replaced the HD on the computer a year or two ago (I rarely ever use the computer) and I must have reformatted the drive to exclude the Recovery HD. Now I want to restore my Macbook to factory defaults (delete and wipe everything) and I can't because there is no Recovery Mode to boot into.Â
Nothing happens when I hold Command+r on reboot, and when I hold Option on reboot I only see my Mac HD, which confirms that the Recovery HD does not exist. What else can I do to restore my Macbook? I tried to download and install the Recovery drive that boots off of a flash drive, but it requires OSX 10.7. Do I need to upgrade my OS and then boot from a flash drive? Is there really no other way to just DELETE everything?Â

DATA RECOVERY SOFTWARE - OR - DATA RECOVERY COMPANIES?
I shot a film this summer on RED ONE digital camera, and now BOTH of my Lacie 2TB drives in which we deposited the footage aren't working. I NEED to recover data.
In researching here and online, I've looked into software options such as Data Rescue 3 and Disk Warrior.
I've also investigated companies in which you mail the drive into them. Lacie themselves recommended a CA outfit called Drive Savers Data Recovery; I've also investigated On Track Data Recovery (the world's largest), and ESS Data Recovery. There's also Tekserve here in Manhattan.
Does anyone have any experience with any of these options/companies specifically? Huge differences in price; everyone seems confident, ESS the most realistic.
What is the best route to recover my film?
The drives have about 800 GB of film footage - in the form of RED's proprietary software - R3D file extensions, plus Quicktime proxies.
Here are the drive issues:
DRIVE #1 - My Master copy of film: my iMac had OS 10.4.11; the drive mounted no problem; I upgraded a few days ago to Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Now it doesn't mount. It's in Disk Utility but the volume line is greyed out. The Apple Store folks tested my iMac and my drive and said it's the drive. They said it was just a coincidence that the drive developed an issue at the same time I upgraded my OS.
DRIVE #2 - was initialized in a Dell laptop, but NOT formatted.

Ok, so this is probably a huge no-no but I have to ask. I'm currently on OSX 10.4.11 and I want to make that leap into Leopard but I'm not trying to shell out $130 if I don't have to.
Can I just use my friend's Recovery CD he got in the box with his Leopard Macbook? The specs are slightly different but it's essentially the same thing.

I got my hands on a few eMacs for cheap and I'm in the process of cleaning them up.
I'm able to get into most of them but have no idea what the usernames or passwords are for the last one of them.
I've tried these instructions but they don't seem to work.
Quote:
OSX 10.3 +
Hold down Apple-S when the computer starts, then type the following commands:
1. /sbin/fsck -y
2. /sbin/mount -wu /
3. /sbin/SystemStarter
4. /usr/libexec/register_mach_bootstrap_servers /etc/mach_init.d
5. cd /var/db/netinfo; netinfod -s local
6. /sbin/SystemStarter
After I enter the fifth command, I get the large block cursor and it doesn't go away when I press enter.
