View 9 RepliesI did a erase and install of OSX today and then restored from a time machine back up, now I can not get past the log in screen. My password is not recognized for some reason. How can I fix this. This is the worst thing that has happened since I switched and I feel that I have lost all my data.

- Mac Pro 2.8 Ghz Dual, 12 GB Ram , GeForce 8800GT
- Main drive Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB (system, applications, files), using less than 200GB, big files go into external archives.
I download Tech Tool Pro 5 version. Tried for optimization my two disks in MacPro, at first im choice defragment one volume, then optimization in this program. Now all my custom dmg files not mounted, I view message - not recognized, bla-bla and no mountd. Help me to recovery data.
Mac OS X 10.5.6 build 9G55
Tech Tool Pro 5.0.1

I'm honestly not very mac saavy and was just wondering if I'm doing something wrong. I'm trying to install 10.6 on my old Macbook Pro but everytime the installer says I cannot install Mac Os X on this computer. I checked the requirements for the install and my computer meets them so I do not understand what is going on, could it have anything to do with my computer being too old for it? Trying to install it on a 15" Macbook Pro 2ghz Intel Core Duo from 2007. I'm also trying to jump from 10.4 to 10.6, could that be the issue?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 2.26GHz 13"MBP, and I just ordered the intel 160GB Gen2 SSD for it. I'm curious if there are any changes I should make in Snow Leopard to optimize it for the SSD. I did some searching and saw that a lot of people are disabling the Sudden Motion Sensor in the Terminal. Are there any other things I should do? Also, I plan on doing a fresh install on the SSD, not cloning my existing drive. Will the SL Upgrade DVD that Apple sent me do the job, or will I need to first install Leopard, off the DVD that came with the MBP, then install SL? When I first install the intel SSD, will it be recognized, or do I need to format it a special way to get it to show up? I'm just trying to get everything squared away before the SSD arrives, so that I can do it right the first time. Also, I don't know if this matters or not, but I DO have the 1.7 Firmware Update installed.
Compiled List Of Suggestions:
1. Disable Sudden Motion Sensor [URL]
2. Uncheck "Put the Hard Disk to sleep when possible", under Energy Saver in System Preferences.
3. "noatime" *Check OCZ Forum for How-To. (I haven't decided if I am going to do this one.)
What is the difference between Defragmentation and Optimization of a Hard Drive?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi've noticed generally the computers in the apple store, even though have lots of applications loaded, are still quite responsive. does anybody know how did they optimize it?
or can you share how did you optimized your system to make it more responsive?
there are two ways: hardware improvement, and software optimization.
obviously buying "better" hardware can help, but for those of us who can't afford to upgrade components of the computer, we can only resort to software optimization.
Got a maxed out 24" iMac on the way (3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Memory, 1TB Hard Drive) which will be arriving in 2 weeks. Just wondering if there is anything I can do to optimize performance and pro-long life on my iMac ready for hardcore music recording and editing, HD Video Editing, Photoshop, Web Design and Flash? Would it be wise to run every single process included in the Onyx application as soon as set up is complete or should I wait till Applications and Music have been installed? Anything else to do to maximize performance and life of the iMac?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to retrieve an iPhoto file from a week ago.
One week ago I attempted to upgrade to Lion, then realized that was not what I wanted to do and rebooted from my clone to restore to Snow Leopard.
When I opened iPhoto however, I realized that the iPhoto library was way further back than I had remembered.
I used my Time Machine backup to get my old iPhoto library back (not to try to merge, just to retreive the file) and I get the error message: "This operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access "iPhoto Library."
I already repaired permissions on the volume. What gives?
I have been having an intermittent issue where when I am in the finder and I want to drag and drop a file or folder to a new location, I can't drop the file when I release the mouse button. I.e. I click on a file, drag it to the new spot, release the mouse button and the file remains attached to the cursor.
how I can repair this? I don't think it is a hardware issue. It happens with both the built in track pad and the majic trackpad I have connected to my computer.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've realized that sometimes I "lose" my wireless signal. I am not using an AirPort router (I'm using Linksys, if that's at all helpful). I've noticed that suddenly all of the wireless signals disappear from the AirPort menu up on the menu bar, except the network that I am connected to (i.e., I only see my router's name there). It also becomes impossible for me to browse the internet, so what I've done to troubleshoot this is disable the AirPort, put the computer to sleep, and disconnect/reconnect my router. When I turn it on, it seems to work. I've also tried simply disabling and then re-enabling AirPort, but it doesn't work after that.
View 2 Replies View Relatedmy "services" menu has disappeared as an option in finder. When I try to access it by right-clicking a finder item (folder or file), it's just plain missing. However if I look for it under the finder menu bar, the arrow beside service says 'building'. But I've been waiting for hours and it doesn't look like anything's happening.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently bought myself a Macbook Pro 13-inch model and I've been loving it so far. One thing that really bugs me is how bad the menu navigation is in OS X. I just read this on Macrumors and the only way to access menu from keyboard is by using ctrl+F2 key for which I have to press ctrl+fn+f2 key since F2 is a secondary function. Also, there is no way of going directly to the middle of the menu by keyboard shortcuts, right? If that is true, Mac OS X is still not polished enough for laptops. is there are a better way to control the menu items?

I run Windows-only programs on my Mac via Wine and I was wondering if there is a way to move the menu toolbar of the windows up to the menu bar to make it somewhat more Mac-looking.

After a day of installing and trying/deleting new apps as well as trying terminal tricks from UsingMac.com like these and these, i went up to my apple menu in the menu bar for the first time since i started fiddling around, and it looks like what you see below in the attachment. I have absolutely no idea what made it happen; I'm just wondering if there is a way to reset the menu alone. because instead of having just what it says in the "system services" section in the menu, it has all that other stuff as well (Calculator, FruitMenu, etc.).
P.S.: Fruitmenu isn't even installed. i uninstalled it after i found out it was only a demo.
So basically:
1) how do i restore the main menu in the menu bar back to its original settings?
and 2) I need to do it in a way that wont screw up the rest of my computer or settings
I've been noticing that my menubar is getting very crowded. When I'm using most applications I can't see a few of my menubar items. I can see all of them when I'm in Finder, but most other apps force a few of the menubar items out. I don't want to have to get rid of my menubar items, I use all but 3 of them on a regular basis, and even those three serve some useful function. What are my options. I really want to find an application that allows the menubar to be split into 2 rows, one on top of the other.
View 21 Replies View RelatedI'm just thinking, the File, Edit, etc., menus seem to be becoming more and more obsolete, as things move into the main window, look at Google Chrome, or Office 2011, I know Apple apps haven't done it yet, and maybe it's just because I'm from Windows recently, but it just seems to take up space unnecessarily.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI've seen some other questions like this but I haven't been able to find out one way or another if this is truly possible.
I love the OS X MenuBar. I keep many menulettes (?) saved up there for easy access. I'm a little OCD, however, when it comes to computer organization.
I have so many things running in my menu bar that it is full...meaning that any new applications that requires menu bar space are not shown (because they are so far to the left, and the application menu options take front priority over them).

View 10 Replies View RelatedI just noticed that my menu bar is no longer transparent, as it was under Leopard (I upgraded to SL the week it came out, but I can't say for sure whether the menu bar was transparent immediately before that...). What's weird is that the "Translucent menu bar" checkbox in System Preferences only toggles between flat gray and the slight gradient look ? neither one shows any trace of the background underneath (I've tried it with several images, just to be sure). I wonder if I might have changed some default value in a .plist or something, and then forgot about it ? has anyone else run into something like this?
