OS X :: How To Handle 2 User Accounts On Snow Leopard

Oct 21, 2009

I'm fairly new to Mac's and loving it so far and I'm very excited to be receiving my 27" iMac tomorrow and since this computer is going to be shared amongst my wife and myself. What is the best way on Mac's to handle 2 users?

The only concern I'm wondering about is email contacts, Internet bookmarks and possibly a few other small things.

OS X :: Creating New User Accounts In Snow Leopard

Dec 28, 2010

As an administrator (without FileVault protection) on Snow Leopard, I created a standard user account (test user1) with FileVault protection. I just want to get familiar with it before creating real accounts. But as an administrator I can't look at files created by test user1. I get a message that I don't have permission.

Do I need FileVault on for the administrator in order to do this? If not, as an administrator, why can't I see what's on other user is doing? Is there a way as an administrator I can see what's files are downloaded, created, websites visited, etc? I'm aware of creating a user account with Parental controls, but would that give me the ability to see what's in the folder?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: How To Handle Some Launch Agents Folder

Apr 8, 2012

Two Flashback questions, followed by some background.

 1) In cleaning up a Flashback infection, why would running the ls -lA~/Library/LaunchAgents / command in terminal, return the result "total 16", when there are only 2 items the LaunchAgents subfolder?  (I checked for invisible files in that folder -- there are none.)

 2) Should I delete any of  plist files from the LaunchAgents folder, including the ones that appear to be for MobileMe synching and Safari bookmark synching? [code]

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Making And Sharing User Accounts?

Apr 4, 2012

I need to duplicate my admin account to a new user account( admin) that will let me access the entire volume and all the data within.

I have tried -

1. I have turned on File sharing from System Preferences, shared the new user account (Also everyone), added files/folders to share the entire original user folder...gave all users Read and Write permission...just about everything...

2. I have run Disk Utility and repaired permissions ( the report said some permissions can't be repaired)

3. I have done everything the manuals here have asked me to do...

4. Went to each folder->Get Info->checked Shared Folder. Even after that folders in the new account it says- I have no access( remember I am an admin the new account too)

Applications :: Pro Grade Replacement - Handle Multiple Accounts?

Jun 8, 2010

I love Apple Mail, but it simply can't handle the bulk of mail I have/receive/need readily available. I thought it was just the number of accounts I was using, but on my new machine I currently only have my personal one and it is DREADFULLY slow (I can't even delete messages in bulk, I have to break them up by scores; which may not seem that big a deal until you're deleting a sent box with 40,000 messages in it). Any suggestions for a Pro grade replacement? Something that can handle multiple accounts, moving large amounts of messages at once, bulk forwards, mail lists, etc.? Freeware preferred but shareware or payware is fine.

Intel Mac :: During Gmail Upgrade, Standard User Accounts Changed To Mobileme Accounts?

Jun 28, 2012

I am not sure how it happened but after upgrading the gmail account, the user accounts were changed from standard users to Mobile Me users.  None of the users has ever had that type of account, and I am trying to figure out how to get it back to a standard user account.  When the user attempts to log in, it asks for the user name, but also the Mobile Me user name (which they do not have).  to make it worse, Mobile Me is no longer accpting new users, so I annot just add an account and log in using the new info.

I don't know if it is causing me any problems, but obviously it is not what it should be. [code]

Went to another server & accessed my bank account to get an address to forward the email to. Went back to my mail & found that the suspected phishing email had vanished. My bank says I most likely got a virus from the email, thinks my account(s) has been compromised & advised me to scan my computer for malware before trying to go to my account again. My Software update shows I have the latest security, I never got a message advising me of suspicios sites or downloads.  So how do I check for a virus or malware???

Intel Mac :: Cannot Change Admin User To Standard User (2 Admin Accounts)

Mar 6, 2012

When I purchased my iMac a few years ago, I created one user account and just started using my computer.  I am trying to implement a few Safe Computing practices by creating a new Admin user account and changing my original user account to a Standard user.

For some reason, I cannot change either of the accounts to a standard user after I type in the password.  I've logged in as both and tried to change the other user profile to a standard user, but the checkbox is greyed out on both of the Admin User accounts.

I can create a new standard user, but I have everyting set the way I like it on my current Admin user account.  It would be much easier to have a new Admin User account and "Downgrade" my original Admin account to a standard user account.

why the option to change from an Admin user to a standard user would be "Greyed Out"?  The support articles walk me through, what should be a few simple steps, but I can not change the settings because the checkbox is greyed out.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Modify A User Name?

I migrated OldNameUser1's data to a new account named User2. Until some test are completed with User2, I cannot delete OldNameUser1's account.  I then modified OldNameUser1's name to NewNameUser1 by: modifying the user name shown in the account's system preferencemodifying the user name shown in the account's system preference (advanced options) After renaming OldNameUser1, it's home folder is still identified as OldNameUser1. How can I modify it to NewNameUser1 ?  When that will be done, will I be able to use OldNameUser1 as User2's account name?

OS X :: Migrating User From G4 Tiger To MBP Snow Leopard

Aug 20, 2010

I've got my old iBook G4 with loads of docs, musics, pictures etc on it, and have bought a recent 2nd hand MBP running Snow Leopard, and want to transfer everything over to it. I tried Migration Assistant but this doesn't seem to work properly Tiger to SL, seems designed for Leopard to Snow Leopard. So:

1) Should I upgrade Tiger to Leopard on the G4, and then use Migration Assistant? If so do I need a special Tiger to Leopard upgrade disc or will an ordinary Leopard disc do?

2) Should I aim to have the same username on the MBP as on the G4, or will this cause problems?

3) Any other tips on getting my stuff from the old computer to the new one!

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: SW User Account Permissions?

Apr 13, 2012

I've noticed a quirk in SW. If one deletes an account (for example, the original Admin account) and answers that he would like to delete the home folder, more often than not, he is asked for the permission of an Admin account. However, if one doesn't enter the credentials and presses cancel, the account (and home folder) disappear anyway. Is this normal? Or is there data residue hiding somewhere.
