OS X :: All Files In Documents Folder Disappeared?
Nov 5, 2010
I'm not tech savy at all, so I need any advice people might have about this. A couple of hours ago all the files in my Documents folder disappeared. The folder is there, but only two documents are in it (the two I was working on today).
I can't find any of my files by searching in the finder window. I have no idea where to start on this. I haven't backed up any of my files because clearly I was operating under the misconception that losing all of my documents all at once could never happen to me.

My documents folder has disappeared, but i know it is still there. I can navigate to it thru the terminal. I can even open it via the terminal, but once i close the window, it is gone again in the finder. If i change it to Column view while i have it open,it shows it as greyed out in my home directory.
I have looked at the permissions, and they are set to give me rwx on the folder and everything in it.
I have run fsck, and found no problems.

I was trying to share this folder, which resides in my secondary hdd. Since i find it too **** hard to share some folders with a windows pc, i guess i messed up some stuff somehow. I tried creating user names, changing share settings but NOTHING worked! The share window is just ridiculous! But anyway That's not my main problem now.Every single file that in that folder i tried to share is gone now. The subfolders are there, but the files are gone. And not deleted; gone. Because i can see and open them with the Pathfinder application. Also can see them under bootcamped Windows. And yes, hidden files are shown at the moment.

I was scanning some pictures today when I noticed that the icon for the folder I call 'Work', which contains all my documents, pictures ect yak and blah, wasn't on the desktop, so I temporarily parked my images in Dropbox and went to look for it. It just wasn't there. When I put in the names of specific folders into Spotlight, they weren't coming up. I do have Time Machine, and went back until I found the missing folder - it seemed to have been absent since yesterday morning - and restored all the items.
What could have caused this to happen? My computer has been acting strangely recently; a couple of weeks back it didn't want to spring into life at all, wasn't booting up - and then seemed fine on the third attempt. A couple of days ago the mouse suddenly stopped working, too, only to reappear with no problem a few minutes later.

I believe that there is a website that translates things for Windows user into mac terms to help with the transition. Can't remember where that came from.

I seem to have lost the ability to save to, or open documents from, iCloud (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote). When I try to open a file I get the following box: URL....There is no iCloud option. Same for when I am trying to save. I am signed into iCloud. I have checked Documents & Data and each iWork app. How do I get my iCloud stuff back?

I recently downloaded Amazon's Kindle for my Mac and it automatically installed a content folder in my Documents folder along with my other folders. Now, I like to keep my Documents folder neatly organized and this My Kindle Content folder kind of messes things up a bit - I really don't like seeing this folder in my Documents folder. question: Does anyone know how to move this folder to another location? I've tried to browse the Kindle app, but I haven't found any obvious way to move it. However, I may have overlooked it. Also, I have tried to browse the Forums to see if someone else asked this question already - no luck yet. Has anyone out there had the same problem? If so, is there a way to move the My Kindle Content folder without messing things up?

Suddenly, all my applications in the applications folder have disappeared! I was suspicious when, trying to open up various apps on my dock, they wouldn't open and I got a question mark over the icons. It is showing '0' applications. I tried copying my applications from my external hard drive. It looks like it is copying over and when the copying is finished, poof, it disappears and applications folder shows '0'. I am on Mac OS 10.3.9, iMac (lamp-shade style), processor is 800 MHz G4, and memory is 768 MB. This is pretty critical, I can't do anything with no applications! (Would this be some strange virus?)

I recently upgraded to 10.6.4 but stupidly did not create a back up immediately afterwards. Now, a couple of weeks on, after some music software crashed I appear to have lost all my system utilities files in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder. This includes my disk Ulity File. I cannot locate them via finder and although I have certainly not deleted them, they have gone. I can't repair my permissions etc. I tried restoring the Utility folder contents from the previous OX version via Time Machine, however ( as expected) I got a message declaring the Utilities file was not the correct version.

So my computer has about 4gb of free space on the hd. I leave for a few minutes, come back and see in the finder that there is 0KB! It also won't let me do anything, not even quit itunes because it says it can't save the library file. It's weird because the computer was idle, I'm pretty sure the only open app was iTunes.
So I restart the computer but nothing has changed. So I transfer a bunch of files to an external HD then delete them. So I now have free space. I want to know where the space went though? I opened OmniDiskSweeper to see what's taking up space and I see this folder called "private" that I've never seen before. Where is this located and could this be the space that disappeared? I included a screenshot so you can see where the folder is.

I am a Mac beginner. There are 3 folders on the right hand side of the dock. Applications, Documents and Downloads. My download folder had disappeared, so I dragged one called My downloads from my documents, and it sits there ok, but it is shown as a white folder, instead of blue like the other two folders.

Title says it all really! The test remains, however, and you can still go into each folder, as it is still selectable.
This is a new 17 inch Macbook, Time Machine restored from a 15 inch one (including system files).
where I can recover the icon files (I think I can copy and paste the icon files into the preview section on the get info window)? Or if there is another solution?
Three other things, if you happen to know the answer as well:
1. I've just bought this screwdriver: [URL]
Will this be sufficient to replace the hard drive in my uMBP (considering it is all Philips screws)
2. Do you know if the Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Hard Drive can be restored using a clone, without slowdown consequences?
3. Do you know of any desktop images which, when selected to cycle for e.g. every 5 seconds, will create a cool effect? I'm thinking night and day scenes, identical images with different hues etc.

I bought my iMac a year and a half ago, but I have no idea how to deal with anything when something goes wrong (because it's so rare that something goes wrong!). Here's what happened:
I woke up, went to my computer, and noticed that a folder was missing off my Desktop. It was full of movie files and it was gone. Thinking a friend had maybe accidentally deleted it, I checked the Trash, not there. I looked through Finder, nowhere to be found. I tried searching specific file names via Spotlight, no luck. I have Apple Care and I called them and the representative took me through all the steps I went through myself to no avail. She also did a disk repair and a permissions repair, no luck.
The weird thing is that if the files were really gone, I would think I would have gotten a lot of disk space back, but I didn't. I'm still where I was the last time I checked, a few days ago.
So now that I've exhausted my own (very limited) knowledge AND Apple's, I'm coming to you. The woman from Apple said sometimes things like this happen when the hard drive is old (only got the computer in April 2008) but I would think that if the files were just spontaneously deleted, I should get a few gigs back on my drive.

On my new iMac 21.5 I inadvertently dragged the Application folder out of the Dock and it disappeared in the puff of smoke. I managed to drag a new alias back to the Dock, but when I click it now it only gives me the finder, but does give me the large window with all the icons displayed. How do I restore this aspect?

I've seen terminal commands that kinda do this, can it be done if so how?
A quick google didn't find me anything (although didn't try THAT hard )

I am new to Mac and I was wondering how I could create a folder within my documents on the mac os.
I recently changed from Windows to Mac and Its a bit of a learning curve.
I really liked the fact that I could store folders within my documents on Windows
Ex. I could open my documents, and open my school folder which had all of my school info.
How can i do this on Mac ?

I've just recently set it up on my Mac that all of my documents that would normally be in the Documents folder are now on my iDisk, in another folder named Documents. I've created a local copy of my iDisk so that my stuff is always in sync. However, just to make it easier on myself, what I would like to do is delete the (now empty) Documents folder in my Home folder, and replace it with an alias for the local iDisk documents folder. That way, I can still go into the Home folder as usual, but the Documents folder there will just point me directly to the local iDisk location. However, OS X isn't letting me do that - I can't delete the Documents folder to replace it.

I have an iBook G4 that is running OS 10.4.11.
Today, I was attempting to copy my documents folder onto my external hard-drive. I had Finder open and tried to move the icon representing documents (on the lower left sidebar) to the icon representing my hard-drive (upper left sidebar). The documents folder disappeared off of the left sidebar, but was not moved onto the drive.
I know the folder has not been deleted, as I am still able to open documents from it in word. However, I can't find the folder, and I'd like to return it to the sidebar. I have tried going Finder>Preferences>Sidebar, but there is no option to add the documents folder. How can I get it back?

The other day, I was using a disk inventory program to delete some of my unwanted files and folders, and I accidentally deleted my Documents folder. It's now in the Trash. How do I restore it? I tried just dragging the folder back to the sidebar, but it doesn't show up the same. The icon in the sidebar shows as a regular folder instead of the pencil and paper that it originally had. Also, if I right-click it and click "Open Enclosing Folder," the Trash opens again, indicating that it's still in the Trash.
How can I restore my Documents folder/alias to its original state?
