recently migrated to a new mbp so i didn't have this problem before, but i would set a background pic to my Home folder, turn off or reboot and the next time osx starts up, the pic would be gone and i would have to set it again, very annoying, anyone know how to fix this?
View 4 RepliesSometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

intel iMac , 10.5.8 , suddenly USB ports stop seeing any devices ( flash memory stick , iPod etc ) connected to it , neither on keyboard nor on computer back panel . Finder or Disk Utility not showing this devices , but the devices could be seen using SytemProfiler . The same devices connected to another Mac computer are working fine .

I have a MacBook Air. I inserted memory stick , but it did not appear in the Finders list for Devices / Remote Discs. When I removed it, a box opened telling me I did so incorrectly. I know how to eject remote devices, but if it was not listed, I could not do it properly. Why did it not appear under Remote Discs?

I have an ongoing project for school that requires me to work on it both at home and in school. When I have finished working on the documents for the project in school I save them to a single folder on my USB flash drive. When I get home I need to continue working on the same files within that folder. Is there an application that will sync the folder on my memory stick with the one on my home laptop as soon I plug in the flash drive? Could I make this in Automator?

The picture is 1920x1080 so I figured the size would be fine I have the 21.5" iMac.But when I change to the picture it doesn't fill the page, but fills the top left of the page. The area of the picture doesn't change when I change the size of my Finder.I also downloaded a picture of size 128x128 The picture didn't stretch, it just took the size in the top left of my finder screen.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'd like to set up the Default Folder, the one you get when you open a new folder with Finder's New Folder (Shift-Cmd-N), so the SideBar and, especially the ToolBar don't show up since I prefer the old fashioned behavior for folder windows. I can get No SideBar to stick but no matter what I do I can't get No ToolBar to stick.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIn the Desktop & Screen Saver pane of System Preferences, I wanted to add a new folder for use as my desktop background images. However, when I click on the + icon to add the new folder, it does not appear in the source list and instead, it duplicates my Aperture library source, as seen in attachment 1. If I try to add the new folder again, it says it is already present in the source list, as seen in attachment 2.
I've tried deleting my com.apple.desktop.plist preference file, and that resets things, but when I go to add the folder, it does the same thing. I've tried different folder locations, different folder names -- nothing works.
Had to perform disc repair a couple of weeks ago and reinstall to defaults. At that time had spinning wheel when trying to start. Now have flashing folder icon with question mark, and cannot enter utilities or start from recovery USB.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to change the background on some Aliases and folders I created on my desktop. I downloaded some icons in .ico and .png format online, and I am able to use the .png format. I open up the .png file, ctrl-c it, then goto the Alias or Folder I want to change the icon on. I do a "Get Info", then I click on the icon at the top and do a ctrl-v. This changes the icon, but it puts a White background behind the icon. See the screenshot below to see what I am talking about. Anyways, so when you go to change your background. You have all these options to choose from folder wise. Well I remember clearly, very very clearly back in Tiger that you could create a folder, or just an existing folder within say "Photos" and you could click it and it would access that folder and all its pictures. Mainly for changing the pictures every 5/10/30/day w/e I like my background to change often. Many pictures.
Well I have had leopard for a while. I forgot when I installed it. But I have noticed ever since then that when I try and change my background. It only lets me use photos that are inside the original Photo folder. There are no folders present inside the photo folder in the Background change area. Only pictures are present. This is a huge issue due to how I like to have things organized.

Anyway, one of my home folders for a user account has gone missing. when you are logged into the account it belongs to you can navigate to it via finder. However you cannot see the folder via finder from any other account. This account is NOT an admin. I had this problem when I was running tiger and it still remains now that I have leopard. 2Ghz INtel core 2 duo Aluminum iMac.

I cant figure out how to change the background color of it in candybar. I'm sick of the standard grey mac color.When I'm in candybar I go to the dock section-->view-->dock-->preview background..the options under preview background are greyed out. Also when I am in the dock section-->view-->background-->change color. I try changing the color but it doesn't change. Am I doing something wrong..or what?

However, when I changed my background via command in the terminal by switching the defaultdesktop.jpg with another picture in the CoreServices folder, My picture does not show up on the login screen instead it is just a plain blue screen. Is there anyway to restore the original login background settings?because I actually found a program "loginox" that easily changes the login picture however, it will not open because it says I have changed the original background photo.

Can you try to reproduce this ? Just pick a big 1GB folder, right click on it and "Compress"... and post if it's successful or not.
I'm using eclipse and a need to select where the LibreOffice is installed. But the Finder.app don't permitte me to select the LibreOffice.app as a folder.

organize folders in finder in a custom order?
I am making folders for each lecture I have, the names of the folders are the dates of the lectures. Then each folder will have two empty word documents with the date as the name as well, one for the lecture and one for tutorial.
I would like to have it in order and stay that way, right now its all over the place, I've tried organizing by name, and last date modified and no luck.
I accidentally dragged a document into the top bar of the finder. Now when I open the finder, there is a document on the top of the gray bar at the top of the finder window. When I try to click on it to drag it away, it automatically opens the document. Does anyone know how to get rid of this?

How do you do this in os x? When you do "get info" on multiple items, it opens individual info windows for each item.
