View 1 RepliesI realize I can click on the icons in the upper left corner to change from cover flow to list view etc., but when you do that it becomes the default view no matter what folder you open. I am a recent windows convert and in windows you can have list view for one folder and thumbnail view in another and it remembers. The problem I have with a single default view is that if I change to cover flow to view photos and then open a folder that is just a list of documents I hav to switch back each time I go form one to the other. I also get an error message telling me you cant view documents this way. Is there some way to set a different default view for each folder?

How do you set up Finder so that the file list shows the location. Right now all it shows is Name, Kind and Last Opened. And, I have to rightclick on the file to find its location.
View 15 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to sort files in my finder first by kind (folders, pdfs, jpegs, docxs, etc.) and then by name? Right now I can only sort by one or the other. If I sort by kind, the files are grouped according to kind, but the names are mixed up. If I sort by name, all file types and folders are sorted according to name. I like the column view because directory structure can be seen easily.

organize folders in finder in a custom order?
I am making folders for each lecture I have, the names of the folders are the dates of the lectures. Then each folder will have two empty word documents with the date as the name as well, one for the lecture and one for tutorial.
I would like to have it in order and stay that way, right now its all over the place, I've tried organizing by name, and last date modified and no luck.
I have a unibody MBP with Snow Leopard on it. I haven't put a disk in it in a long time but tonight when I did, it slowly spins, etc and then ejects it in about 15 seconds. It doesn't show up in finder at all.
I first put in my snow leopard disk, then a dvd, then a music cd... nothing.
I went to the finder preferences and made sure everything looked ok, but no joy.
Can you change the default size of the widths of the columns when you open Finder in Column View? I'm getting tired of grabbing the drag-bars and adjusting every time just so I can read the truncated text in sub-folders.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd like to be able to sort my downloads folder by Date, but have other places in the Finder sorted by Name. Is there any way to do this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I right click a folder I have dragged to the Dock I get the option to sort by "Date Added". This is super handy and I would like to be able to do it throughout the Finder but I can't find the option anywhere. Please note: I realize there is Date Created and Date Modified, these are not what I'm wanting to do, if a file was created and last modified a year ago, but added to a folder five minutes ago, I want to be able to sort the folder contents so that the file just added appears at the top of the list. (As they do in Stacks.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm a recent switcher, and of course would never voluntarily go back to a PC. Love everything about the Mac for the most part.
One thing that has bugged me: In Windows File Explorer, when browsing files, all the folders are at the top (in alpha order), then the files are sorted below that in alpha order.
In Finder, the folders are mixed in so everything is alpha all together.
I would prefer seeing all my folders at the top.
Is there a setting that controls this?
If I have the following folders or files (the numbers in which represent dates):
"20120211 abcdef" and "2014 abcdef" then, if I sort the files by Name in Finder, they will be sorted like this:
"2014abcdef"
"20120211abcdef"
so Finder seems to be treating the numeric characters as numeric values and sort the files by numeric value.
How to change this behavior and tell Finder to treat numeric characters as alphabetical characters and sort the files/folders like:
"20120211abcdef"
"2014abcdef"

About 2 weeks ago suddenly Finder are unable to sort files in alphabetical order in Column mode.About the same time when my external HDD died (don't know whether this has any effect).
Sorting by name works fine in icon only mode, but whenever I switch to Column mode its completely disorganized. And when I tried in coverflow mode its alphabetical but in inverted mode (Z to A).

I'll be getting an 80GB Air this week and I'm trying to gauge how much space I'll use up. Right now I have about 80GB of space used up on my hackintosh, but allot if it is junk I probably won't transfer over. Is there a way to look at all the files on my computer in order from largest to smallest?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a lot of PDF and other files in general that I would like to keep sorted by date. Normally in finder options I would sort them by date but the problem is that the bulk of them were added to my laptop by scanning, e mail hard drives so the creation dates of these files is not necessarily the same date as these statements. I tried naming theses files by date e.g. 10/02/12 etc but obviously this did not work as numbers are recognised in sequence and not by calender.

I need some help to convert .dv and .avi files to ipod touch compatible files using handbrake. When I try to choose either file type as the source file it just says 'no valid title found'.
The .dv file is a clip shot with my video camera and imported onto my mac using imovie, then saved as separate full quality file, in order to have a separate file that is not sitting in imovie.
The .avi file is a downloaded movie.
Both movies play fine in quicktime player and VLC player.
The Handbrake program does work as I have successfully converted a file ripped from a dvd using mactheripper.
I am surprised that I can't get it to work, as other threads on this forum recommends handbrake as the best software for video conversions for ipod.
i've got a massive photo and video library. and would like to know if there's any way i can sort through my files with finder (or any other app) by resolution?

how to sort files and folders by date. As all this data is from the last 5 years naming them alphabetically (jan 09, feb 10 etc) was not working. create names numerically yy/mm/dd. While this works I have many folders, sub folders and sub sub folders and it gets somewhat confusing at times. Is there some alternate solution so that I can name folders by month and year alphbetically and force Finder Column view to show me the list in the way I want ( such as Jan09, Feb 09, march 10, april 10 etc)

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy first mac was the last version of Powerbooks that were made in 2005. On it, I was able to set a phrase that whispered "Sharina, you are now running on reserve battery power." I absolutely loved it and it always freaked people out. I have read that other people were setting custom phrases like this as well.I was wondering if my brand spanking shiny new Macbook Pro i7 purchased in last month can do the same thing.. New macbook is Snow Leopard while old powerbook was probably Tiger.
