I'm on a Powermac G.5 dual 1.8 with an upgraded superdrive running 10.5.6
About 3 days ago I noticed that I couldn't burn a dvd using Roxio's Toast 10. I would receive a medium write error.
I tried a second time with the same results.
I then moved to itunes which I have updated to the fullest version and tried to burn a playlist to cd and also received a medium write error.
Finally I tried to burn the original dvd using disk utility and it almost worked up until it hung on finishing. The funny thing about the run with disk utility was that the disk played in my home dvd player with no problems despite quitting the burn prematurely.

It is supposed to be the best burning package on mac. But I doubt it. I convert videos to dvd-video format using the absolutely brilliant windows7 application convertxtodvd. Please dont tell me to use a mac application instead of it. I tried it many times, there were always several problems(slow speed, subs etc). This is not the case here.
So, I want these dvd-videos in Video_ts format, to be burned in dvd disks using toast. It is supposed that video_ts folder are a standard folder, no matter the system you use. But toast has a different opinion. When I drag the folder in the dvd-video window, it asks to re-encode the video!!!If I try to burn this video_ts folder in windows machine using 'nero', no problem at all, straight burning! I really cannot understand why this happens.
Another problem I have is that the files I want toast to burn, usually reside to network computer. Is there any way to burn files from a network computer(win) using toast? Can toast access network or not? If not, I have to manually copy files to local disk, several minutes spent for copying gigabytes just to be able to burn them.

I have some .avi files I would like to convert to DVD Format. Then I would like to make a menu, and burn them to a DVD. I'm guessing I can only put about 2 or 3 on a DVD.
What are the steps and programs to use to make this happen?
I've messed around with iDVD but I cannot figure out how to compress the DVD files on iDVD if I want to add an extra on it.
So basically, for a beginner, what would be the steps and programs to use to be able to convert a .avi to DVD format and then burn to a blank DVD-R so I can watch them in a DVD Player.

Can I merge multiple files, and multiple file types, into a single PDF with my MacBook Pro?, Can I merger multiple files, and multiple file types, into a single PDF with my MacBook Pro?
I need to combine word docs, .jpgs, .PDFs, .pptx files from multiple sources into a single PDF. In the past I've used software such as Nuance but I'm wondering if there's something in the MacBook Pro OS or applications that support this function.
Info:
Mac Pro, iOS 5.1.1

I have set up an automator service that TAR's a folder into an archive for me and it works quite nicely. Idealy however, I would like to be able to highlight several folders, right click and have automator tar each folder into it's own TAR archive, but do it one by one.
[Code]...
I'm not 100% sure so I guess it would be a good time to verify, is there a problem with having the system try to TAR multiple folders at one time? If it is not a problem then I guess this discussion itself is pointless and I can simple right click on each folder and select "TAR Folder" and just wait until they're all finished. I would think that it would be ideal for the system to do each one individually and not try to do them all at one time.

I compiled cdrdao for Mac OS X. This can burn bin/cue files very easily. The only cue/bin pair which haven't worked for me thus far had spaces and hyphens in the file-name. Changing the file name and editing the cue file to reflect that solved the problem.
You can download my binary from here:[URL]
The command is used thusly:
Insert a blank CD, tell the finder to ignore the CD and continue.
type: sudo ./cdrdao write -device IOCompactDiscServices blah.cue
If run as root cdrdao will use high priority threads to avoid underruns.
If you have a DVD burner you would use "IODVDServices" instead.
If your CD-R isn't known (like mine wasn't) you can select a specific driver. For example this is in my .tcshrc file:
alias cue sudo /Users/anarkhos/cdr/cdrdao write --device IOCompactDiscServices --driver generic-mmc
thus to burn anything I just type "cue blah.cue"

I burn a cd every month of my documents and photos. My Mac has no problem reading the files from the disc, but my PC seems to only "read" the photos. When I try to read the text files (.doc, .rtf, etc.) I get an "access denied" msg.My Mac is Tiger 10.4.11, WORD is 2004, both fully up to date; everything pretty vanilla. My PC is a senior citizen with W98, and WORD 2000 and is not connected to the Internet.

I would like to burn AAC files as MP3 in iTunes. I tried checking the option MP3 CD in the burning dialog box but it didn't work, It said something like these files cannot be burned as mp3, these are songs from the iTunes store (aac files).
How can this be done in iTunes if your songs are AAC?
Do I need to convert them to MP3s first? If yes, will this convert my downloaded files (.aac files form iTunes store ) to mp3s as well?

If I try to do this in iTunes I get a CD where the songs are in AIFF format and I can't play them on every CD player. And with every other burner or converter is the same, I obtain only AIFF files. Consider that I've already tried a lot of converters and in iTunes doesn't work!

I have 12 Videos in .mov format that I saved from .wmv format using quicktime and flip4mac. I have also tried saving them as AVI and same result.
Here's the problem, when I put them into iDVD and save as disk image to check, the videos are there, but no sound. I tried also burning them to DVD, using a maxell DVD-R 16x, and all the will come up on the dvd is the title menu. Movies will not play on my macbook or in the dvd player on TV. I tried using the .avi format but there still was no sound, and the movies were really choppy.
if i try to use iMovie, it will not even import these .mov files (doesn't let me click on them to import)
is there another format i need to export to, or change some setting to get the sound in my project, and get the movies to play have i burn them?
All the movies are approx 1hr long except one, and I was using the best performance setting putting 2 movies per dvd.

I am having difficulties burning 88.x MB DMG files to CDs (new CD-Rs and an old CD-RW) onto two different external USB2 disc burner drives (both have power AC connected: HP and LG Super brands). The new Mac Mini (no disc slot drive)'s updated 64-bit Mac OS X 10.7.4's Disk Utilities tries to burn and then fail right away or after a few seconds. The error says "Unable to burn 'whatever.dmg' (The disc drive did not respond properly and can't recover or retry." Nothing interesting in dmesg, but Disk Utility's logs had details:[URL].
I do see my drives' lights on during the burn. I can quick erase the old CD-RW fine. I can burn 538 MB from an 64-bit Windows 8 on my Acer AM3800 PC with the same discs and external burner drives without any problems. Also, I thought it was my USB cable extension, but it wasn't it. I don't use any USB hubs either. DMG files are fine too. I did notice copying from a CD to Mac Mini's local HDD was slow, but no failures.
